This is one of the world's largest geological web sites with more than 200 web pages, comprising geological field guides , with hundreds of full screen, colour photographs of varied geological features and with associated geological bibliographies. A directory of geological links is associated with these pages. Individual sections have their own more detailed indices. The series of Geological Field Guides to the South Coast of England has emphasis on Dorset Hampshire , the Isle of Wight and elswhere is being progressively enlarged and extended, and has associated bibliographies. Jurassic, Cretaceous and Palaeogene strata are exposed on this beautiful coastline. There is data on other topics such such as geology of the Pyrenees and on sabkhas or salt flats of desert regions. Welcome to the Geology Wing
Exploring this series of exhibits will take you on a journey through the history of the Earth, with stops at particular points in time to examine the fossil record and stratigraphy. The Geology Wing is organized according to the geologic time scale. If you wish to begin browsing now, click on any division of the time scale below You might wish to start in the Cenozoic Era (65 million years ago to the present) and work back through time, or start with Hadean time (4.5 to 3.8 billion years ago) and journey forward to the present day. No matter "when" you start, don't forget to stop along the way to learn about the stratigraphy, ancient life, fossil localities, and tectonics of the various time periods. Here are three links that can help to speed your journey:
Get helpful hints on navigating the Geology Wing
Read about the history of the geologic time scale , and find out more about how it is organized.

GEOLOGY SONGS
The Geologist's Come-All-Ye (a folksong) by Brenna Lorenz Come all ye lads and you will hear
About the life that we love dear, Refrain: With our diddle-air-re-oh, falling rock away, knock it down,
Fall-di-knock-a-rock-away, me laddie-oh! Geologists all bold and strong,
We are the subject of this song. We get up with the rising sun
And map until the day is done. We walk two hundred miles a day,
And study rocks along the way. We fight our way through brush and trees
And slog through bog up to our knees. When flies are thick, then we don't walk,
They carry us from rock to rock. We swing our hammers with a whack,
Take home an outcrop on our backs. Nine hundred pounds of rock or more
Is just an average daily score. If we run out of food to eat
There's always rock beneath our feet.

Rock Stars
Introduction
by Robert N. Ginsburg, 1994-95 Chair, History of Geology Division Bernard of Chartres, an 11th-12th century philosopher and teacher, said that we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they and for a greater distance, not by any virtue of our own but because we are carried high and raised aloft by their stature. All of us have our geological heroes, those giants on whose shoulders we stand. To encourage recognition of these luminaries and to provide inspiration for students and young professionals, the GSA History of Geology Division presents Rock Stars , brief profiles of our geological giants.

Geology : Plate Tectonics
The progress of the earth sciences and the advancement of technologies associated with the understanding of our planet during the 1940's and 50's have led geologists to develop a new way of looking at the world and how it works. This exhibit explains the history of our new understanding of the Earth and provides a brief overview of the theories behind it.
