    Natural disasters hazards: be prepared
Floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes can be devastating. Even more devastating are the consequences of not being fully prepared. Below are some of the general suggestions for disaster preparedness. Always keep a supply of food and water available. Choose foods which do not require cooking or refrigeration. Also keep on hand covered containers which may be used to store fresh water. After a flood, discard any food that may have come in contact with flood water. Boil any water for ten minutes before using. bodyOffer(21288) Always keep a battery-powered radio to keep abreast of any warnings or weather alerts. Have several flashlights readily available. Keep a supply of batteries on hand and store in a waterproof container. Keep important papers and insurance policies in a safe place where they will be easy to find if home must be evacuated. If pets must be left behind, make sure that they are put in the safest place possible with a supply of food and water. If not required to evacuate, keep indoors and stay tuned to news and weather programs for updates on conditions. When returning home after evacuation take special care. Live power lines may be hidden under standing water or debris. Do not use open flames when entering the home since ruptured gas lines might be leaking. Be careful when walking since walls and floors may be unstable.

Princeton Undergraduates Brief Congressional Staffers on U.S. Vulnerability to Natural Hazards April 25, 2002 Students from Princeton University recently briefed Senate and House staffers on the vulnerability of the United States to natural disasters. The focus of the briefing was the presentation of a poster that the students generated for the Congressional Natural Hazards Caucus as part of an undergraduate course. The students each presented a different part of the research needed to complete the poster. The final poster features a large map of the United States that superimposes the occurrence of earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes with population density, making it possible to identify hazard location and potential risk at a single glance. The border of the poster contains more detailed, supplemental information, including graphs illustrating the expenditure of federal dollars for disaster relief, population increase, and variations of GDP over time.
Caroline Carter reviews the need for a map showing. vulnerability to natural hazards. Disaster relief associated with hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods accounts for over 75 percent of federal emergency assistance. Tornadoes inflict less financial damage, but are responsible for a significant number of deaths. It was for this reason, student Caroline Carter explained, that the group chose to create a map that illustrates areas in the United States with high vulnerability to these hazards.
