Bedford Institute of Oceanography
The Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Canada's largest centre for ocean research, is located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Opened on October 25th, 1962, it has grown to rank among the most respected research institutions in the world. Over 300 scientists, engineers, and hydrographers in many specialized fields study the ocean off Canada's east coast. BIO scientific teams investigate the physical and chemical properties of the ocean, the life within it, and the geology of the sea-floor, as well as the interactions between the atmosphere, the oceans and the continents. Many of the Institute's projects are interdisciplinary, bringing together physical, chemical, biological, and geological oceanographers. A number of projects are also international, involving scientists from other oceanographic institutes around the world. Primarily operated by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), BIO also houses researchers from Departments of Natural Resources and Environment.

The Texas Institute of Oceanography: Fostering Research and Education on the Coast
By Rahilla C.A. Shatto Center for Marine Life Sciences , the Texas Center for Climate Studies , and the Center for Texas Beaches and Shores . The affiliated Galveston Bay Information Center provides a collection of resources concerning the environment of Galveston Bay. The Center for Marine Life Sciences (CMLS) , directed by Dr. Andre Landry, Jr., collaborates with researchers to provide facilities which help promote excellence in marine-life research and education. Its programs include the Marine Mammal Research Program (MMRP), the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TMMSN), and the Sea Turtle Biology and Fisheries Ecology Research Programs. Dr. Bernd Wursig leads MMRP which studies cetaceans and sirenians that populate the Gulf of Mexico and the world's oceans. The program integrates behavioral, physiological, and population data from live-animal studies with toxicological information obtained from dead mammals in order to understand environmental effects on marine mammal health. Wursig works with students in the COASTCET branch of MMRP to identify and track bottlenose dolphins along Texas shores. The three-year GULFCET program led by Dr. Randall Davis, sponsored by the Minerals Management Service, surveys dolphin and whale populations in the Gulf of Mexico. Oceanographic data from satellites and hydrographic surveys help identify habitats while researchers in planes and boats track cetaceans.

While ocean observations remain one of our principal missions, we have increasingly developed modeling expertise, both analytical and numerical, to support seagoing science and to better understand fundamental ocean processes. The seagoing groups have evolved into a number of technical and scientific groups having specialized equipment. Below we present some of our specialized research working groups:
The following list contains the present groups in our department:
This is a joint PO/AOPE entity which services the entire Institution and a large number of outside users, locally, nationally, and internationally. It is based largely in the Village, but uses the Clark South high bay for staging.
Upper Ocean Processes (UOP)
The part of the old Buoy Group that dealt with surface moorings has expanded to include instrumentation (eg. VMCMs, met packages) for use on these moorings. As a result of the WOCE effort, the group has expanded into standardized met packages (IMET) for research and volunteer observing ships. It has also focused on understanding how the surface mixed layer responds to air-sea fluxes.

SADCO The Southern African Data Centre for Oceanography (SADCO) stores, retrieves and manipulates multi-disciplinary marine information from the areas around southern Africa. SADCO has been in existence since the 1960's, and in its present configuration since 1990. It is operated by the South African CSIR Stellenbosch on behalf of a number of marine organisations in South Africa and Namibia, namely
  • Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, represented by the Marine and Coastal Management, Cape Town and the South African Weather Bureau, Pretoria.
  • CSIR, represented by Environmentek, Stellenbosch
  • South African Navy, represented by the Institute for Maritime Technology, Simonstown.
  • National Research Foundation (Pretoria), on behalf of South African universities.
  • Namibian Ministry for Fisheries and Marine Resources, represented by the National Marine Information and Research Centre, Swakopmund.
These organisations are represented on a Steering Committee, along with a representative from the Industry.
