(Click for full C.V.) Ph.D. University of Miami 1969 Sedimentology and Geology of Basins General Interests Art Chadwick's interests include basinal and suprabasinal sedimentologic trends, including the analysis of paleocurrents and other directional structures. He is also involved in research on the basal Cambrian depositional systems and deep water processes in a number of areas, including work on the Tapeats Sandstone in the Grand Canyon region. His paleocurrent work takes him to far-flung areas of the globe in search of new sources of data. Current Research Chadwick is currently working with Elaine Kennedy of the Geoscience Research Institute and Chris Prince of Petrographics, Inc. on the Tapeats Sandstone depositional system in the Grand Canyon and central Arizona. In addition, he is working with Darryl Maddox of Amarillo CC on the Permotriassic of Palo Duro Canyon, and Tom Zoutwelle of The Netherlands, on the global patterns of paleocurrents in the Phanerozoic. In addition, we have an active community of evolutionary biologists, taxonomists and paleontologists elsewhere on campus and at the nearby Field Museum of Natural History . The combination of the University's Department of the Geophysical Sciences and Committee on Evolutionary Biology , along with the Field Museum , makes Chicago one of the foremost centers for evolutionary biology and paleobiology. http://www.geo.arizona.edu/Paleoclimate/Parrish/other.html
Judy Parrish Tom Moore and I are examining the problems of non-uniqueness in positioning continents in various ways. As a focus for this study, we are examining the two alternate positions for Gondwana proposed for the mid-Paleozoic, which would be expected to have profoundly different effects on climate. Part of the problem has been the orthogonal grid system (latitude-longitude) universally used by both paleogeographers and paleoclimatologists, which is completely inadequate for the uses to which it has been put because the grid cells are nowhere near equal area. Tom has developed a geodesic grid system (published this year in Computers in Geology ) that largely circumvents this problem and is currently developing an algorithm for relating the orthogonal grid system (in which data are compiled) and the geodesic system. My Fall, 1997, Paleoclimatology class undertook a reconstruction of early Eocene climates, which we are hoping to submit for publication within the next year. Publications (*reprints available): Chase, C.G., Gregory, K.M., Parrish, J.T., and DeCelles, P.D., in press, Topographic history of the western Cordillera of North America and the etiology of climate, in Crowley, T.J., and Burke, K.C., eds.

    Sedimentology and Sedimentary Petrology
After taking his B.A. degree at Harvard, John Hubert received his M.S. at the University of Colorado and Ph.D. at the Pennsylvania State University. Before coming to the University of Massachusetts in 1970, Hubert taught at the University of Missouri at Columbia for 12 years, progressing from Assistant Professor to Professor. Over the years, Hubert has published papers individually and with students on the paleoenvironments and petrology of sands and sandstones deposited in flysch basins, deltas, rivers, lakes, eolian dunes, alluvial fans, on shorelines, and in the deep ocean. He is now concentrating on the sequences and sedimentary petrology of terrestrial rocks and their modern analogs. His current research focuses on the fluvial, playa, and alluvial-fan redbeds and lacustrine gray strata of Triassic-Jurassic age in the Deerfield, Fundy, Hartford, and Newark rift basins of the eastern United States and Nova Scotia. Another current project is the paleogeography and paleoclimatology of the dinosaur-rich Morrison Formation of Jurassic age, Colorado-Utah. These studies emphasize sedimentary structures and sequences, petrology of the light and heavy minerals, diagenesis, and regional paleogeography.

This project focuses particularly on the Cambrian Chengjiang Biota, the Precambrian Weng¡¯an Biota, the Huainan Biota, the Miaohe Biota, the Xilingxia Biota, and the Lantian Biota. The goal of this project is to provide detailed paleontological data on the diversification of metazoans and to better understand the evolutionary mechanisms behind the Cambrian Radiation. The Origin and Evolution of Major Plant Group: This project emphasizes the study of Mesozoic ginkgoaleans, early vascular plants, early angiosperms, reproductive structure and in-situ spores of filicopsids, and ultrastructures of epidermis cells and in-situ spores

    John,
The structured bibliography that we handed out at the Institute
last summer (at the back of the binder) has a couple of pages of
paleoclimatology references -pp.23-25. Also you can try using
First-Search to check the table of contents of journals like Global and
Planetary Change I think that it used to be called Paleogeography,
Paleoclimatology and Paleoecology. I found that you can get to it by
going into the general sciences section, clicking the contents searcher
and then asking for jo:global and planetary change or su:paleoclimatology. Your librarian can show you how to use First-Search if you are not already familiar with it.
