    Arctic Circle
The overall goal of Arctic Circle is to stimulate a greater interest in the peoples and environment of the Arctic and Subarctic region. This 'electronic circle' has three interrelated themes: natural resources; history and culture; social equity and environmental justice. Includes information on sustainability, economic development, colonisation, ethnographic portraits, self-determination, cultural identity, a museum, virtual classroom, maps and a discussion group.

Mrs Youngman returns to the Polar Regions Mrs.Youngman spent the summer of 2001 at Summit, Greenland studying the snow and the atmosphere... this year she will be travelling to Antarctica for more research. To learn more about her expeditions and science projects, read on! cactus man visits greenland summer 2001 Introduction and Overview TEA - Teachers Experiencing the Antarctica and the Arctic Understanding the Polar regions is crtitical to the understanding of our planet. And yet, because of their remote locale and inhospitable climate, we are only beginning to have the opportunity to travel and work in these places as scientists. Even more rare is the opportunity for teachers to not only experience the world's more unusual regions , but also to experience and particapte in true field research. The TEA program brings together teams of teachers and scientists in these regions. This partnership captures the essence of science and of education and excites teachers to bring back the experience of travel and field research to the students in their classrooms.

    The Topic:
Polar Regions Easier - The polar regions are the icy areas around the North and South Pole. The Arctic and Antarctic are in the polar regions. Polar bears, penguins, seals, whales, and walrus are a few of the wildlife that live in these very cold regions. Harder - The cold polar regions are found on the far south and north ends of the globe. During the winter the sun never rises and the during the summer the sun never sets. When the sun does shine, it is very weak. The weather is very cold year around. The polar regions were the last places on Earth to be explored. There is much debate over the valuable oil and mineral resources available in the polar regions. The southern polar region is called Antarctica. This ice-covered continent is larger than the United States and is surrounded by ice and water. It contains a 16,000 foot mountain. Even in the summer, it rarely gets above freezing. Although it is dry, cold, and very windy, scientists and visitors live here. An international treaty allows people of many nations to live together. The northern polar region is called the Arctic. The Arctic is a huge ocean surrounded by land. Most of the ocean is frozen, but there are areas where the Inuit people live. The Arctic fringe is tundra covered with low grass plains.

    History of German polar research
Early polar research activities in Germany were concentrated on investigating geographic conditions in order to obtain a first idea of these hitherto unexplored regions of the world. In later years, attention was focused more on geomagnetic and meteorological questions. The huge unexplored polar regions awakened the curiosity of geologists and biologists. Alfred Wegener, considered the most important polar researcher from Germany, led numerous expeditions to Greenland. He died in November 1930 during an expedition to Greenland's ice cap. The polar research institute newly-established in Bremerhaven in 1980 was named after him. As a token of remembrance, the Alfred Wegener Institut has named its stations in the polar regions after the great German polar researchers (Koldewey, Neumayer, Dallmann, Filchner). , the first German South-Polar research ship was marooned for a year in Antarctic pack-ice. The R.V. Gauss was forced to overwinter in the ice, and could only break free after 11 months. Polar research continues to present a technical as well as a human challenge. In Polarstern Germany found a new research platform which reduced the risk to personel considerably, as well as enabling a broad spectrum of scientific studies to be carried out in the least accessible seas on the planet. As a result, polar research is much easier to plan:
As one of the most robust polar research ships in the world, Polarstern is particularly attractive for international science. All cruises are considerably oversubscribed. Usually, the scientists on board comprise one third AWI employees, one third German scientists and one third international colleagues. To date, scientists from 35 nations have joined the ship. Research at the AWI has attained international significance through the possibilities offered by the Polarstern. Polarstern has played an important part in building up German Antarctic research since 1980.
    Polarstern is currently

Tajikistan Tajikistan Higher Education and Research
By the late 1980s, Tajikistan had twenty institutions of higher education. Despite the ample number of such institutions, the proportion of students receiving a higher education (115 per 10,000 inhabitants) was slightly below the average for the Soviet republics in the late 1980s. In scientific and technical fields, Tajikistan ranked near the bottom among Soviet republics in the proportion of residents receiving advanced degrees. During the Soviet era, Russian, rather than Tajik, was the preferred medium of instruction in several fields of higher education. The first institution of higher education in Tajikistan was the State Pedagogical Institute in Dushanbe, which opened in 1931. Tajikistan State University opened in 1948. By the mid-1980s, about 14,000 students were enrolled in the university's thirteen departments. At that time, admission was highly competitive only for applicants seeking to study history, Oriental studies, Tajik philology, and economic planning. In 1994 the university had 864 faculty in fourteen departments and 6,196 full-time students.

    The Polar MM5
    Description:
Based on the experience of previous research into mesoscale modeling in polar regions by the Polar Meteorology Group of the Byrd Polar Research Center at The Ohio State University, the Pennsylvania State University (PSU)-National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Fifth-generation Mesoscale Model (MM5) has been modified for use in polar regions (referred to as the Polar MM5). The key modifications are:
    • Revised cloud / radiation interaction
    • Modified explicit ice phase microphysics
    • Optimized turbulence (boundary layer) parameterization
    • Implementation of a sea ice surface type
    • Improved treatment of heat transfer through snow / ice surfaces.
Model validations and case studies of Polar MM5 simulations over Greenland and Antarctica have been performed, and the results published in the journal literature. References and full text versions of these articles are provided below. The Polar MM5 is now available as options in the public release version of MM5 (v3.5 and later) from NCAR. For convenience, the source code is also provided below.
