19 Johnson Quaternary studies focus on the processes that presently shape the natural environment and have operated over approximately the past two and a half million years (Quaternary period). A knowledge of Quaternary events facilitates an understanding of earth history in relation to the modern environment and has predictive value with regard to present-day and future environmental changes. Quaternary research is typically interdisciplinary, and thus it commonly involves related interests of two or more academic units. The Quaternary Research Center was established in 1967 to foster such interdisciplinary studies on a cooperative basis. The center has the following goals:
  • To understand environments and climate changes of the past two and a half million years in the context of modern surface processes, which include historical changes, prehistoric postglacial environments, and Ice Age events.
  • To serve as an effective catalyst in fostering interdisciplinary studies in the fields of atmospheric sciences, archaeology/anthropology, botany, engineering, fisheries, forestry, geology, geophysics, oceanography, pedology, and zoology.
  • To provide a scientific perspective on the scale of modern and man-made environmental changes, including climate changes, in the context of recent earth history.

    MU-SPIN Project Site Visit to the Wabanaki Center in Maine This site visit is the culmination of previous communications between MU-SPIN, City College of New York (CCNY) NRTS and the National Indian Telecommunications Institute (NITI) to conduct science and technology outreach to the four Indian Tribes of Maine. The Wabanaki Center at the University of Maine will serve as the key coordination and planning entity to facilitate the outreach. Click here to see the agenda The Wabanaki Center exemplifies the University of Maine's commitment to diversity. The Wabanaki Center's mission is to build and sustain a mutually beneficial relationship between the University of Maine and Native American communities.They strive to develop a better University community understanding of traditional and comtemporary Native American cultures through education. The Center facilitates and encourages the exchange of resources and knowledge between Native American communities and the University of Maine. The Wabanaki Center also seeks to enhance awareness of Native Americans through its participation in campus-wide efforts to promote cultural diversity, and through is significant contributions to the development of university curricula and programs. The Center engages in Native American student development, providing support for the achievement of their academic, career, and personal objectives. The goal of the site visit was to consolidate a partnership between NASA, science departments from the University of Maine, the CCNY NRTS, and NITI to improve technology infrastructure and science curriculum in the Tribal schools. The end result will be increased enrollment in the science departments at the University and increased retention of Tribal students.

    About the QRC

    Johnson Hall (above) houses the Quaternary Research Center and the Department of Earth and Space Sciences. Built in 1930, it is named for Orson B. Johnson, who joined the faculty in 1882 as a professor of physiology, botany, zoology, biology, mineralogy, geology, chemistry, and natural philosophy.
    Introduction
    A knowledge of Quaternary events facilitates an understanding of earth history in relation to the modern environment and has predictive value with regard to present and future environmental changes. This linking of the past, present, and future through interdisciplinary study and research is making the University of Washington a major center for such work.
    The Quaternary Research Center seeks:
  • To understand environments and climate change of the past two million years in the context of modern surface processes. These include historical changes, prehistoric postglacial environments, and Ice Age events;
  • To serve as an effective catalyst in fostering interdisciplinary studies involving diverse fields including atmospheric sciences, archaeology, botany, climatology, engineering, forestry, geography, geology, geophysics, geochemistry, oceanography, paleoecology, pedology, and zoology;
  • 78. Overview - Quaternary And Regolith Studies
    In addition to their intrinsic interest, quaternary studies are relevantto understanding the global impact of humanity on environment.
    http://www.anu.edu.au/graduate/programs/q1/overview.html
    Graduate Studies in Quaternary and Regolith Studies Overview
    Graduate Studies in Quaternary and Regolith Studies at the ANU is distinguished by one of the most comprehensive arrays of geoscience laboratory resources in Australia, supporting a wide range of research projects. The concentration is on research, with particular attention to the integration of geologic and biotic features of the terrestrial and marine record. Regolith is the weathered rind of the earth's crust. Although regolith formation in many regions spans much more than Quaternary time, systematic study of the regolith intersects with numerous aspects of Quaternary research. Weathering profiles, landscape evolution, and surficial deposits, together with their mineral concentrations, are the concerns of regolith studies. Groundwater studies, and interactions between rocks, soils and water, are also of concern to those working on the regolith. Although commonly bearing the imprint of Quaternary climatic changes, the history of the regolith can range through tens to hundreds of millions of years. Its study includes mineralogy, geochemistry, geochronology, hydrogeology, sedimentology, and geomorphology, and interrelates strongly with application of these methods in Quaternary research. Graduate Studies in Quaternary and Regolith Studies focus on questions vital to the understanding of environmental processes that are important today, but which operate or develop on time scales too long for direct instrumental observation. Understanding of past patterns of change can be applied to environmental protection and the wise use of natural resources.
