SUMMARY
Over the last 25 years over 250 Quaternary and Late Tertiary sequences in North America have been analyzed for fossil insect remains. Most of the remains recovered are from Coleoptera (beetles), and these can be used as indicators of environmental and climatic changes. Fragments of Coleoptera are present in many Quaternary deposits, but unlike most pollen grains, many of the exoskeletal remains can be identified specifically. Beetles appear to respond rapidly to climatic change illustrating thermal variations which are often not easily recognized, or detected, by other conventional indicators. This web page is the third revision of a paper which originally appeared in Geoscience Canada entitled " Beetle Bits: The Science of Paleoentomology" (Morgan and Morgan, 1980a). It provides some references and summarises some of the techniques and results of two decades of work in Canada, parts of the United States and England.

Distinguished Career Award Nominations are being solicited for the 2002 and 2003 AMQUA Distinguished Career Awards. The award recognizes a Quaternary scientist who has contributed significantly and continuously to the advancement of Quaternary science in any discipline. This award is the highest one made by AMQUA and truly honors someone with a life-time commitment to Quaternary science. I encourage everyone to consider and nominate those senior scientists who have contributed significantly to their field. The scientist must be a North American, although the area of research is not restricted to this continent. The nominee must be alive at the time of nomination and does not have to be a member of AMQUA. The winner of the award will receive a bronze sculpture and recognition at the next biennial meeting, in addition to publication in
