Air quality standards - an overview

The Government’s Air Quality Strategy for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland sets national air quality standards to protect human health.
Air quality - carbon monoxide

Traffic is the dominant source of carbon monoxide. Projections show that national air quality standards will be met by 2003.
Air quality - lead

In the mid-1980s, legislation was introduced to control the lead content of petrol. National air quality standards are likely be met by 2005; 3 years ahead of the target date.
Air quality - sulphur dioxide

Power stations are the main source of sulphur dioxide. Projections show that the national air quality standards will be met by 2004. Trends in air quality Air quality is much better today than in the 1950s.

Welcome to Air Quality
Australians consistently rank air pollution as a major environmental concern. The state of our air is an important factor in the quality of life of Australian cities. It affects the health of the community and directly influences the sustainability of our lifestyles and production methods. The Air Quality Section of Environment Australia seeks to protect and improve urban air quality through national action to reduce emissions of major air pollutants. Our focus will be on those sectors that make the greatest contributions to adverse air quality as well as those pollutants that continue to pose threats to the environment and human health. We are implementing national policies and programs to reduce emissions from these sectors: National action can take the form of implementing relevant national standards and strategies, a common approach to monitoring air quality, research to inform air quality policy and community education on air quality issues.

Back in the early 80's, no one was thinking about indoor air pollution or chemical toxicity in
household and building products. But AFM was working with environmental medicine physicians
and their patients - people with allergies and chemical sensitivities - to formulate products that
do not leave irritating chemical residues in the air after use, and therefore do not contribute
to the "chemical soup" created by ordinary materials. Every AFM product has been used
successfully even by those most sensitive to environmental pollutants -
the chemically sensitive/environmentally ill.
Today, we remain the only company to provide a complete range of chemically responsible
building and maintenance products. And, this is all we do; we will never take the approach so
many large companies have by making one product marketed as "environmental", while still offering 1000 others that are as toxic as they have ever been. That is, after all, hardly the

Air Quality
Air pollution has been one of Europe’s main political concerns since the late 1970s. European Union policy on air quality aims to develop and implement appropriate instruments to improve air quality. The control of emissions from mobile sources, improving fuel quality and promoting and integrating environmental protection requirements into the transport and energy sector are part of these aims. The Sixth Environment Action Programme (EAP), "Environment 2010: Our future, Our choice" , includes Environment and Health as one of the four main target areas where new effort is needed. Air pollution is one of the issues included under Environment and Health. Whilst overall air quality trends in the Community are encouraging, continued efforts and vigilance are still needed. The objective considered in the Sixth Environment Action Programme is to achieve levels of air quality that do not give rise to unacceptable impacts on, and risks to, human health and the environment. The Community is acting at many levels to reduce exposure to air pollution: through EC legislation, through work at the wider international level in order to reduce cross-border pollution, through working with sectors responsible for air pollution and with national, regional authorities and NGOs, and through research. The focus for the next ten years will be implementation of air quality standards and coherency of all air legislation and related policy initiatives.

U.S. EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ) protects public health and the environment by controlling air pollution from motor vehicles, engines, and the fuels used to operate them, and by encouraging travel choices that minimize emissions. These "mobile sources" include cars and light trucks, large trucks and buses, off-road recreational vehicles (such as dirt bikes and snowmobiles), farm and construction equipment, lawn and garden equipment, marine engines, aircraft, and locomotives.
Transportation and Air Quality key topics are:
Overview: Pollutants and Programs: Information on how much air pollution and greenhouse gases are emitted by mobile sources, the programs OTAQ has undertaken to control these emissions, and the impact of those programs on air quality and climate change.

es da de el en fr it nl pt ... Search on EUROPA Air quality has been a problem since the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. Years ago, big cities like London used to suffer badly from smog (a mix of smoke and fog). Today, smog does not poison our cities and towns as much as it did then, so there has been some progress in controlling air pollution. However, acid rain still damages forests and wildlife, and there are growing concerns about the effect of air pollutants on our health. What the European Union does
Find out what the European Union has done, and is doing now, to improve air quality in our cities and to combat climate change. What YOU can do
What can YOU do to help improve air quality in cities and combat climate change? Causes of poor air quality
Everyday, tiny dust particles, chemicals and heavy metals are released into the air from factories, farming activities and transport.
Effects of poor air quality

Some of the pollutants in the air are dissolved in water vapour and form acid rain, which harms the environment. Others may simply remain in the air and damage our health.
Improving air quality

Measures to counteract poor air quality include setting targets for reducing pollutants, and research into renewable energy and technological solutions.

Some of these chemicals, like mercury , are known to be highly toxic, even in small amounts. For others, like tungsten , we have very little knowledge of their toxicity.
Some of the substances get into our bodies after being emitted by industrial facilities as pollution; others come from the foods we eat, natural sources, past pollution, or a combination of all three.

  • Florida has had no official violations of any of the National Air Quality Standards, thus Florida's overall air quality is reasonably good. However, revised federal ozone standards and elevated readings of ozone during 1998 have created concerns about Florida's future air quality compliance. The Department of Environmental Protection reports that it will not know for certain if counties with a history of ozone problems will be redesignated as non-attainment areas until the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency makes that determination in the year 2000.
