Welcome
This web site contains information for those interested in the deterioration processes in cultural heritage objects caused by the indoor environment, especially air pollutants. Here you will find papers and technical notes, literature reference lists, conference and meeting reports with abstracts, and address lists of museum professionals, all about the impact of the air quality on objects in museums, libraries, or archives. As the focus of this site is on material degradation, e.g. like metal corrosion or hydrolysis of organic materials, there will be no references to indoor air quality and human health.

Welcome to the Scottish Executive Air Quality Team internet pages. The Air Quality Team develops domestic policies and initiatives to improve air quality and reduce risks to human health. We work in partnership with the other Devolved Administrations and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to ensure objectives set out in the Air Quality Strategy for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are achieved. We also take forward policy on statutory nuisance, including noise, issues and aim to ensure Scottish interests are fully considered in future legislation.

Information about the air we breathe is now being looked at in Waltham Forest. This forms part of a government directive - the National Air Quality Strategy - launched at the beginning of 1998. The strategy requires local authorities to identify and take action to tackle local air quality problems of seven key pollutants (see below). The strategy is aimed at achieving the air quality objectives by 2005.

    Air quality
Our aim is to maintain the air, land and water in the borough to the highest possible quality. This is done by monitoring the environment, controlling the release of pollution, giving advice and by taking action against those who pollute. In December 2000, an Air Quality Management Area was set up to cover the borough by the Health and Environment section of Tower Hamlets Council. This means that the air over all of Tower Hamlets is constantly monitored to identify the levels of harmful pollution. This has shown that a large amount of the pollution in Tower Hamlets comes from vehicle emissions. Other important sources of air pollution are from central heating systems and construction sites. We have monitoring stations at locations around the borough where levels of fine dust particles and other pollutants are continually recorded. The results are fed to Ceefax, and also published weekly in the Tower Hamlets free paper, East End Life.

    Professor Peter Yau,

Burnside Hall, Room 818; call for an appointment. This Domain is open only to students in the BSc Major in Environment Program. The rapid expansion of industrialization has been accompanied by a host of environmental problems, many of which, if not most, involve the atmosphere. Some problems are of a local nature, such as air pollution in large urban centres, while others are global, or at least reach areas far removed from industrial activities. The emphasis in this Domain is on the mechanisms of atmospheric flow and on atmospheric chemistry. Courses examine how the atmosphere transports pollution, lifting it to great heights into the stratosphere or keeping it trapped near the ground, moving it around the globe or imprisoning it locally, or how it simply cleanses itself of the pollution through rainfall. The Domain also gives students the training required to understand the important chemical reactions taking place within the atmosphere, as well as the know-how necessary to measure and analyze atmospheric constituents. Courses offered at the Macdonald Campus are marked with an
