NOFRETETE Funded by the European Commission DG Research -
V th Framework Programme in the thematic programme "Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development" , Key Action 2 "Global change, climate and biodiversity" Nitrogen oxides emissions from European forest ecosystems
General information
Contract N° Official commencement date Duration 3 years Coordinator Klaus Butterbach-Bahl The source strength of EU forests for the primarily and secondarily active N-oxides N O and NO is highly uncertain. However, recent investigations have shown that EU forests, due to high rates of atmospheric N-deposition in the last decades, are significant sources for N-oxides. Based on results obtained from field and laboratory experiments on the characterisation of N-oxide fluxes in different forests (e.g. climate, soil, forest type) we will further improve and validate a) a mechanistic model and b) a canopy exchange model for predicting N-trace gas emissions at the soil-atmosphere and canopy-atmosphere interfaces. After combination of both models, we will calculate EU wide inventories of N-oxide emissions from forests with hitherto unknown precision and, using scenarios for future changes in climate and N-deposition, predict future changes in N-oxide emissions.

Australian Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the variety of all life forms: the different plants, animals and micro-organisms, their genes and the ecosystems of which they are a part. Australia is one of the most biologically diverse countries in the world, with a large portion of its species found nowhere else in the world. We depend on biodiversity for our survival and quality of life. The most significant impediment to the conservation and management of biodiversity is our lack of knowledge about it and the effects of human population and activities on it.
  • Ecosystem processes: biodiversity underpins the processes that make life possible. Healthy ecosystems are necessary for maintaining and regulating: atmospheric quality, climate, fresh water, marine productivity, soil formation, cycling of nutrients and waste disposal.

Welcome to this "green portal". Here you will find continuously updated information on the environment. My task as EU Commissioner responsible for the environment is very rewarding. Environment policy is one of the EU's most successful areas of activity: thanks to EU environmental legislation, by now over 200 legal instruments, we have for example made great progress in cleaning up the air and our rivers. Environmental issues are also a good example — perhaps the best of all — of an area in which we must act together. Pollution knows no boundaries, and no country on its own can guarantee a clean environment.

Basic Philosophy
Where Are We Heading?
A Better Way
Eden Foundation believes that there is a purpose with every species, even though it often has yet to be discovered. It is important to preserve both a variation between species, and within a species. These variations reduce the risks of pests and diseases as well as the need for inorganic fertilisers and irrigation. Plants should be chosen that thrive naturally in the area where they are to be cultivated, rather than being supported artificially. To maintain the genetic variation of a species, they should be reproduced through seeds rather than shoots or artificial methods. By intercropping (mixing different species in the same fields, often annuals and perennials), the plants can support each other better and naturally maintain a high level of soil nutrition. The downside of this is that it does not work very well with the agricultural machines in use today. But Eden believes it is better to adapt the machines to the world than to adapt the world to the machines.
The environmental degradation seen all over the world today is caused mainly by humans. When people don't see the use of elements in their environment, they will abuse them. However, if they see a purpose, they will protect and maintain them. Fencing areas and setting tracts of lands off-limits to people is not the ultimate solution. Humans have a place in the world, as much as any other species. Eden believes that people can have an as positive effect on their environment as they can have a negative one. Man should live in symbiosis with nature, where he benefits from the land by what it gives, and where the land benefits from him because he protects and takes care of it. When he does a good job, wildlife will increase as well. The problem of overpopulation that many are concerned about today may not be such a big problem after all, as people will be needed to reverse the process of environmental degradation.

Forests and Biodiversity
Deforestation remains one of the pressing global natural resource problems facing humankind. Tropical forests, in particular, continue to disappear at a staggering rate in the face of growing populations and the demand for economic goods. Over the past decade, 154 million hectares of tropical forests, equivalent to almost three times the land area of France, have been cleared. (page 1 of 12) Christopher Gronbeck - October 25, 1994

COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSION TO THE COUNCIL AND THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Biodiversity Action Plans in the areas of Conservation of Natural Resources, Agriculture, Fisheries, and Development and Economic Co-operation
Texts of the Biodiversity Action Plans Press Release: What is the EC CHM? The EC CHM aims at facilitating scientific and technical co-operation and at providing access to information relevant to the implementation of the CBD by the European Community. It should also contribute to education programmes and to raising public awareness of biodiversity. Why an EC CHM? The European Community is committed to facilitate public access to information relevant for biodiversity. The EC CHM is a one-stop-shop for such information. For example, it provides access to information on policies, legislation, funding opportunities, data bases, sources of expertise, etc held by European Community institutions. It provides links to other institutions and organisations (governmental, private and NGOs) keeping useful information elsewhere in Europe. It also links to web sites of global organisations such as the CBD Secretariat web site. The EC CHM is therefore a key tool for anyone who wants to know more about biodiversity. Thanks to the data and information available, the EC CHM is an important tool for promoting and facilitating scientific and technological co-operation not only within Europe but also with countries around the world, in particular with developing countries.
