Ecotoxicology
The Department of Ecotoxicology has purpose-built state of the art facilities and is able to offer an extensive range of ecotoxicological and biodegradation tests required for the chemical, agrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. The dedicated team of expert scientists provide a high quality yet flexible service to our clients and can advise on the design of studies to meet world-wide regulatory requirements. Our scientists have gained a wide range of experience of testing of different chemical types and have been involved with the ring-testing of new methods, as well as taking an active part in the development of new methodologies through working groups and professional associations. As such, we are able to update and refine our facilities and methods continuously to meet changing regulatory requirements. The tests conducted include, but are not limited to:
  • Acute and Reproduction tests in Daphnia magna Acute toxicity tests with the marine copepod Acartia tonsa Oyster embryo larval toxicity test Acute toxicity test with the marine invertibrate Mysidopsis bahia Acute toxicity tests with freshwater and marine fish Fish growth tests Early Life Cycle tests with fish Bioaccumulation in fish Algal Growth tests with a variety of species Acute toxicity tests with Lemna minor Bacterial toxicity tests Earthworm toxicity tests Toxicity Tests with sediment dwelling organisms such as Chironomus or Lumbriculus

Ecotoxicology "WRc-NSF aims to offer customers a quality ecotoxicological testing service which is designed to meet their requirements in a cost-effective manner" Capability The WRc-NSF Ecotoxicology Group can assess the effects of chemicals, products, formulations and environmental samples (effluents, leachates, receiving waters and sediments) from:
  • aquatic toxicity tests using a range of algal macrophyte, invertebrate and fish species bioaccumulation studies using a range of aquatic invertebrates (Lumbriculus variegatus and Mytilus edulis) and fish species terrestrial toxicity tests using invertebrate species
The tests described are:
  • carried out to appropriate national or international standard methods (where available) or manufacturers guidelines in the case of proprietary methods performed in certain circumstances to the requirements of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) supported by analytical chemistry where required.
WRc-NSF is also able to offer customer multi-species testing under semi-field conditions in a series of purpose build ponds. The impact of continuous or episodic point and non-point discharges on receiving water quality (including pollution incidents) can also be investigated using laboratory-based bioassays or the deployment of in-situ methods.

Ecotoxicology Comes Back to Sydney Interact2002 will host the third collaboration between the Australasian Society for Ecotoxicology and the RACI. The 4-day meeting will bring together ecotoxicologists and chemists for the largest conference of its type in Sydney for over a decade. A stimulating program including 10 plenary speakers, 30 keynote speakers, platform and poster presentations, workshops, short courses and an exhibition has been organised, with ecotoxicology as one of the major themes. There will be invited presentations covering trace metal toxicity and speciation modelling in waters and soils, multivariate techniques to link biological and chemical data, methods to predict community level effects and a special symposium on mining impacts. International experts of particular interest to ecotoxicologists include Professor Mike Newman (Virginia Institute of Marine Science, USA), Professor Chris Wood (McMaster University, Canada), Dr Paul van den Brink (Department of Water and the Environment, The Netherlands), Dr Ed Tipping (Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, UK) and Dr Mike McLaughlin (CSIRO, Australia). • Development of Advanced Eutrophication Models - QEA assisted the U.S. EPA by extending a traditional eutrophication model by dynamically modeling the components of the food web responsible for most of the carbon oxidation, oxygen utilization and nutrient recycling: bacteria, protozoan, and metazoan zooplankton. EPA Aquatic Effects Assessment Model - QEA personnel developed a mathematical modeling framework for assessing the effects of toxicants on the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems. Southern California Bight Natural Resource Damage Assessment - QEA analyzed spatial patterns in the concentrations of p,p'DDE and total PCBs in sediments, water and biota in the Southern California Bight and applied a bioaccumulation model to three species of fish, three species of birds and California sea lions in order to quantify pathways of exposure.

    The group is part of the Plymouth Environmental Research Centre and is internationally recognised for its work in conducting innovative, world-class studies in ecotoxicology. The group has extensive interactions with other research groups in Environmental Chemistry Environmental Instrumentation and Monitoring Petroleum and Environmental Geochemistry ), Environmental Biology (Marine Biology and Ecology) and the Peninsula Medical School. International collaborations are strengthened by funding and participation in the European Union and United Nations Agencies (UN Global Oceans Observing System, UN Global Investigation of Pollution in the Marine Environment). Formal exchange agreements with other Universities include an ERASMUS exchange programme. Research aims
    The active research programmes conducted by the Ecotoxicology Research Group address two core scientific themes:
  • Detecting and understanding the mechanisms by which pollutants give rise to biological effects
    Unravelling the fundamental mechanisms of toxicant-induced cell injury
  • Key thematic topics
    Some of the specific themes addressed by our current research programmes are listed below. These projects are funded by research councils, government bodies, charities, the EU and industrial partners. The Course
    This is a vocational course related to the demand for trained personnel in the environmental regulatory agencies, and in companies and agencies subject to such regulation and those involved in providing support services such as monitoring, remediation and consultancy. This course aims to enable and facilitate students in the acquisition of the knowledge and skills related to ecotoxicology, which are necessary to understand the impact of chemical and other stresses on humans, organisms and ecosystems, and the regulation of these stresses.
    Objectives
    The specific objectives of the course are to provide students with: 1. an understanding of the general mechanisms of toxicity in humans, organisms and ecosystems, and the basis of setting environmental quality standards; 2. instruction in the design of environmental monitoring programmes, the analysis of data, and the selection and use of appropriate environmental models; 3. an understanding of the behaviour of emissions to water, the legislative controls on these, and the main associated environmental problems; 4. an understanding of the behaviour of waste in the environment and emissions to air and land, and the legislative controls on these and the main environmental concerns.
    Course Structure
    Postgraduate Diploma course Students take four taught modules;
