About The Graduate Program
Ryerson University offers a Masters degree in Environmental Applied Science and Management for graduate study in environmental science, technology, environmental management systems and decision making. This is a multi-disciplined program for full-time and part-time graduate students who are seeking advanced study in a professionally-based environmental program that provides opportunities for research in a variety of environmental fields and that leads to management roles in an expanding environment industry. The Applied Science and Management program is unique in Ontario in integrating the environmental science disciplines with studies in environmental management. The curriculum reflects the view that graduate work in the environmental management field requires not only a knowledge of the environmental sciences and how they are applied, but an understanding of environmental management theory and practice. In combining applied science and management, the program also follows the Ryerson university tradition of applied education and research. The program takes a systems management approach to environmental problem solving in the private and public sectors. In order to respond to the complex environmental challenges in air, water and soil quality, energy and resource utilization, waste management and development impacts, industries and governments must develop an improved scientific and technical understanding of environmental issues and a proficiency in environmental analysis and decision-making. An environmental systems management approach, one that attempts to integrate a number of decisions an organization can make and their effects on the environment, is the focus of the graduate program.

Environmental Management Systems Supporting the Demand for ISO 14001 Services The ISO 14000 standards provide a structure for managing environmental activities. The series includes guidance and specification standards. Guidance documents are descriptive rather than prescriptive. Organizations register to ISO 14001, the only specification standard in the series. ISO 14001 is a system standard, not a product or performance standard. It's a generic document containing core elements for managing an organization's processes and activities to identify and control environmental effects. The ANSI-RAB National Accreditation Program (NAP) EMS program for registrar accreditation and RAB's programs for auditor certification and auditor training course accreditation support ISO 14001 implementation and registration. By assuring the credentials of third-party registrars, training course providers, and individual auditors, these programs add value to the ISO 14001 implementation and registration processes. INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS:
ISO 14000
By Isis Fredericks and David McCallum 1. At Last: A Consistent, Internationally Recognized Model for Environmental Management The ISO 9000 series of Quality Management standards, with over 70,000 registrations around the world, isa used by organizations as a model for a quality management system. Now make way for the new kid arriving on the block - the ISO 14000 series of standards the model for an environmental management system. Environmental Management is a tool for an organization to keep aware of the interactions that its products and activities have with the environment and to achieve and continuously improve the desired level of environmental performance. ISO 9000 is aimed at meeting customer requirements, control of the process and continuous improvement. ISO 14000 is aimed at these, and more: 'customer requirements' has expanded to include regulatory and other mandatory environmental requirements; and 'continuous improvement' is not only driven by customer expectations but also by priorities and objectives generated internally by the organization. 2. Guidelines for Quality and Environmental Management Systems Auditing
The cost of failing an environmental/quality management systems audit can take a number of forms: companies can lose valuable contracts or prized certifications; they may have to pay for an expensive range of improvements demanded by a client; they may experience and erosion of efficiency; etc. BS EN ISO 19011: 2002 therefore offers guidelines for quality and/or environmental management systems auditing. It is intended that by using this new standard, organizations can save time, effort and money by:
  • Avoiding confusion over the objectives of the environmental or quality audit programme. Securing agreement of the goals for individual audits within an audit programme. Reducing duplication of effort when conducting combined environmental/quality audits. Ensuring audit reports follow the best format and contain all the relevant information. Evaluating the competence of members of an audit team against appropriate criteria.

Environmental Management Systems an d Pollution Prevention
Introduction
Although an organizations management does not have to be certified in order for it to be considered an EMS, some organizations seek to obtain certification for their EMS. Some industries, such as the automotive industry, are encouraging certification of their suppliers. This may be done by using ISO 14000 as a guide to form the EMS and then working through a registrar to gain the certification. According to ISO 14001, the EMS must contain an environmental policy which states that the organization will implement the prevention of pollution, continual improvement and environmental compliance. The organization must identify environmental aspects of its operations and determine the impact they have on the environment. Ohio EPA's Office of Pollution Prevention has taken a significant interest in encouraging companies to development an EMS since they focus around environmental compliance and the prevention of pollution. The Office of Pollution Prevention is committed to assisting organizations with reducing the waste at its source. As such, we offer our aid to organizations in their continual improvement to find ways to reduce their waste and prevent the pollution at its source. OPP can assist by providing technical information and conducting on-site assessments. For more information see  On Site P2 Assessments An EMS is a process that encourages better organization of business priorities. An effective EMS helps to identify the causes of environmental problems and then eliminate them. It can save money by reducing waste, increasing efficiency and reducing costs associated with environmental compliance and liability. Not only does it focus on what environmental problems happen but also on why they happen. Over time, this systematic identification and correction of system deficiencies leads to better environmental compliance and better overall business performance.
