51. Rainforests Endangered!
Tropical rainforests comprise only 40% of the world's tropical forests and only 20% of the world's total forests.
http://mbgnet.mobot.org/sets/rforest/like.htm
Rainforests Endangered! T oday only about three percent of the original temperate rainforest in the U.S.A. remains, mostly inside Olympic National Park in Washington State. Prior to the arrival of homesteaders just over a century ago, the Olympic Peninsula contained more than a million acres of old-growth spruce and hemlock. Because of habitat destruction, many plants and animals have become "island dwellers" inside the park now. Tropical rainforests comprise only 40% of the world's tropical forests and only 20% of the world's total forests. They cover 6-7% of the Earth's land surface. Half of the world's plant and animal species live in the tropical rainforests of the world. Thirty acres of trees are cut in the tropical rainforests every minute. As you read this, tropical rainforests are shrinking. Each second a portion of rainforest the size of a football field is destroyed or damaged. What can you do to help save the tropical rainforest?

A Sampling of Tropical Rainforest Animals
Rainforests are very dense, warm, wet forests. They are havens for millions of plants and animals. Rainforests are extremely important in the ecology of the Earth. The plants of the rainforest generate much of the Earth's oxygen. These plants are also very important to people in other ways; many are used in new drugs that fight disease and illness. Where are Rainforests? Tropical rainforests are located in a band around the equator Go to a rainforest map printout to color
Strata of the Rainforest

Different animals and plants live in different parts of the rainforest. Scientists divide the rainforest into strata (zones) based on the living environment. Starting at the top, the strata are:
  • EMERGENTS : Giant trees that are much higher than the average canopy height. It houses many birds and insects.
  • CANOPY : The upper parts of the trees. This leafy environment is full of life in a tropical rainforest and includes: insects, birds

This holiday season, nearly 2,000 children from all over the United States wrote directly to Sandy Weill, CEO of Citigroup, to ask for their holiday wish: that the largest bank in the world stop lending money towards rainforest destrcution and global warming. These letters listed the reasons for preserving forest ecosystems for the upcoming generations and appealed to Mr. Weill to do the right thing in 2003 and set policies which reflect the industry's best practices and use bank money to save forests, not cut them down. The Vanishing Rainforest
It is no secret that our rainforests are quickly becoming an endangered species in and of themselves. It is our commitment to do whatever possible to educate those around us to the extreme importance of the forests and how vulnerable they are to the destructive forces of man. Please take a look at what we have included in our research project. If you have anything you feel should be include on our pages, please drop us a line. In conjunction with our tropical rain forest project, Dale Beasley's sixth grade class of St. Philomena School in Des Moines, Washington, has completed a project entitled, "Rainforests of the Pacific Northwest", examining a different type of rainforest right in our own country.

I. Rainforests: What they are and where they're found...

There are two types of rainforests: tropical and temperate.
Tropical rainforests are found in 85 countries around the world. "Ninety percent of these forests are concentrated into fifteen countries, each country containing over 10 million hectares each." (Malaysian Timber Council, 1995) Tropical rainforests are located near the equator, where temperatures stay above 80 degrees Fahrenheit year round. These dense, damp forests occur in Latin and South America, Africa, and in Southeast Asia. "Although they [tropical rainforests] cover just seven percent of the Earth’s surface, they can provide habitat for between 50 and 90 percent of its plant and animal species. In 1990, tropical rainforests totaled some 1.7 billion hectares." (Forest Alliance of British Columbia, 1996) Half of the world’s rainforests lie within the borders of Brazil, Indonesia, and Zaire.
A tropical rainforest has three layers: the forest floor, the understory, and the canopy. The forest floor has poor soil. Mainly insects live on this layer, although large mammals like gorillas and jaguars are also found there. Many smaller animals, including anteaters, lemurs, and tree kangaroos live in the understory. This is also where many small trees and shrubs are found. The canopy, or top layer, is made up of the tops of trees which can grow to be over 200 feet high. Many tropical birds, monkeys, apes, snakes, and other animals live in the canopy.
