Seminar on Environment and Development in Vietnam Friday and Saturday, December 6-7, 1996 Common Room, University House,
and J G Crawford Building, National Centre for Development Studies,
Australian National University BACK TO INDEX Global change challenges for environment and development in Vietnam Dr Louis Lebel,
Abstract Global change will add another layer of challenges for those concerned with future development and the environment of Vietnam. Land use and cover change is the most pervasive and easily observable component of global change. In Vietnam, deforestation, intensification of agriculture, and urbanisation have proceeded at variable and often rapid rates over the last couple of decades. Other important global changes include changes in atmospheric composition, climate and biodiversity. Plantation development in the vast areas of degraded land in Vietnam is a high priority and plans should take into account global change. This presentation will conclude with an outline of a proposal for a collaborative study to aid long-term reforestation efforts in Vietnam.

TEXT VERSION
Introduction and Activities
The Earth is constantly changing. Weather and seasons are clear examples of regular changes in the global environment. Other changes are not as evident because they occur over intervals longer than a human lifetime or because the changes are not easily seen. Much of the change takes place on Earth is part of natural cycles. Human activity, however, can also cause environmental changes. The following activities are presented to assist in teaching these concepts of Global Change. Please consult The Teacher's Guide which explains how the activities are related to time, change, cycles, and Earth as home. From there, you can check out the following activities:
  • Time and Cycles
  • Change and Cycles
  • Earth as Home
People are being asked to limit activities that change the environment, but before sensible limits can be adopted, we need information. Questions include:
    • What are current environmental conditions and how are they changing?
    • Are environmental changes caused by natural variation or by human activity, or both?
    • How will local changes affect other parts of the Earth and its systems?

Dramatic weather patterns in the past few years are convincing even determined skeptics that something is happening to global climates. Human beings have changed planet earth; we have done much harm. One of our accomplishments is to extract and burn most of the fossil fuel deposits on the planet. We have increased the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and are now observing the changes in weather patterns and climate that are a result of our actions. Greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). These gases act like the glass covering a greenhouse, letting sunlight in but blocking some of the infrared radiation from the earth's surface that carries heat back into space. The gases act like a blanket wherever their concentration increases. Local concentrations increase local heat and increased differences between hotter and colder regions drives weather events into more extreme ranges. Over many years, the total amount of these gases accumulates and the average temperature of the whole planet is increasing. The planet's thermostat had been set at a pleasant average temperature of 59 degrees (F) for the last 10 thousand years or so and is now poised to undergo a rapid change. Global warming means that the earth retains more of the sun's heat over time. Heat drives weather and increased heat means increased turbulence in the atmosphere. What the consequences might be have to do with the distribution of this extra heat and its effect on ocean and air circulation patterns. We can accept paradoxical weather results as the extra heat makes systems more unstable.

The University of Michigan's Global Change Curriculum offers an innovative approach in undergraduate science and social science education as part of the Program in the Environment . In three interdisciplinary, team-taught courses the topic of Global Change from physical and human perspectives are examined, and case studies are used to explore conditions for sustainability. The courses are aimed at first and second year students who want to understand the historical and modern aspects of Global Change. These 4-credit courses include hands-on sections and carry NS or SS distribution credit. A Minor in Global Change can be completed in the first few years of study. The three Global Change Courses are its required core and students learn further through the completion of 2 elective, campus-wide courses. Read the UM Global Change leaflet
