Environmental Hazards in the Home
Will this house make you sick? Things you should know about your house and the environment
This publication is a reprint of a cooperative publication developed by the EPA, trade associations, and state and federal agencies representing the U.S. housing and home finance industry. It is in the public domain.
Introduction
Does this home fit my needs and those of my family? Is this a safe, secure home, free from potential hazards? Is this home a good investment and will it retain and increase its value in the years ahead? These are among the hundreds of questions that home buyers ask themselves as part of the home-buying thought process. It is good policy, this questioning, a means of gathering hard facts that can be used to balance the emotional feelings that are so much a part of buying a home. In ever-increasing numbers, home buyers today find it necessary to add new kinds of questions to their quest for information. Environmental concerns are becoming an element of the home-buying process.

Environmental Links Household Hazardous Waste Program When you look in your garage, under your sink, in the basement or shed, do you see lots of old paint cans, jugs of used motor oil and antifreeze, unwanted pesticides, containers of dirty paint thinner, and other unusable household chemicals? If you answered "Yes," you may be ready for a household hazardous waste (HHW) collection. Tennessee has a mobile HHW collection service that goes from county to county every Saturday from mid-March to mid-November. If you are a resident of Knox Hamilton , or Davidson counties, you may take your HHW to one of the permanent collection sites located in your county. Note: Nashville's HHW facility is open seven days a week throughout the year minus holidays. Nashville has lowered its over all cost from $293,000 in FY 2000 to $149,000 in FY 2002 while at the same time increasing customers from 1,500 to 5,800 per year? For more information about Davidson County's HHW facility please call 615-862-8680. HHW is as any unwanted or spent household product that can catch fire easily (flammable), eat away at or irritate living tissue (corrosive), react violently with water or other chemicals (reactive), or is poisonous to humans and animals (toxic). Usable household products may exhibit hazardous properties but until they become a waste they are not appropriate for the household hazardous waste program.
