African Initiative on Mining Environment and Society
The TWN Africa Environment Unit's programme strongly reflects the uniting theme of "Globalisation and Africa" as it pertains to the impact on the environment and sustainable development. In particular, it has identified the extractive sector (mining, including petroleum, forestry and fisheries) as the critical area where the impact of F.D.I and the key forces of globalisation contribute to environmental degradation and social conflict in Africa. The Unit led the creation and coordinates AIMES (African Initiative on Mining Environment and Society), a pioneering effort to draw together civil society organisations, across Africa, involved in advocacy on mining issues. The Mining Environment Research Group is a cooperative working group made up of government agencies, mining companies, Yukon First Nations and non-government organizations for the promotion of research into mining and environmental issues in the Yukon. Participants bring their resources and knowledge to work cooperatively on mining environmental issues and projects. For example, a mining company may have research commitments for the environmental assessment and water licensing stages of mine development. Members of MERG would identify those projects planned by the company which could have general application across the Yukon by the addition of extra funding or by broadening the scope of the work. An added feature of research commissioned by the Mining Environment Research Group is that in addition to the final technical report, the final project results must be provided in non-technical language. The results of research undertaken by MERG would therefore be disseminated to a broad audience, including the general public, First Nations and communities.

The Mining of Ecuador By: Christopher Sacco The Meaning of the Word "Relajo" Mining the Third World
The rainforest of the Napo Province is one of the most biologically diverse in the world. Mining in the Developing World is hardly a new phenomenon, but in the last decade the affair between multinational mining companies, Third World governments, and the International Community has gotten steamy. More developing countries have turned to large-scale mining than ever before, at a cost to their resources and people that will not be fully realized until long after the sudden influx of cash has been spent and the resources have been exhausted. South America's untapped reserves and newly adopted neoliberal economic stance are attracting mining companies from all over the globe. Two of the central tenets of economic neoliberalism are the reduction of government expenditures and the adoption of a laissez-faire approach to business. Struggling to survive the New World order, many developing nations have weakened mining and environmental regulations to entice foreign investment. In some cases these cuts have opened up large areas of virgin land and denied recourse to those who oppose mining activities.

The ADaM Data Mining Environment The ADaM Data Mining Environment is a client-server architecture that supports a large variety of functions in a distributed framework. The ADaM data mining engine is designed to extract content based data from large Earth science data archives. It detects phenomena or events and stores this information to facilitate further processing or analysis. Some mining results are stored in an ITSC-developed Event/Relationship Search System used to search for relationships between mining-generated phenomena, climatological events and other data. The data mining environment also provides other capabilities such as subsetting, on-demand data product generation and custom processing through specialized client applications. Custom processing may include gridding, resampling, filtering, format conversion, or other types of analysis depending on the needs of the customers. Client interfaces can be web-based or desktop applications that communicate with the data mining engine across the network. Platform-independent, distributed applications communicate with the mining engine through a common client application programming interface via network sockets. The engine utilizes local and distributed data stores for both input and as a destination for results. Phenomena (or event) results are stored in the Event/Relationship Search system for additional analysis by researchers.

Abstract: One of the main obstacles in applying data mining techniques to large, real-world databases is the lack of efficient data management. In this paper, we outline a two-level architecture, consisting of a mining tool and a database server. Key elements in its success are a clear separation of concerns: the mining tool organizes and controls the search process, while all data-handling is performed by the parallel main memory DBMS. Data is stored as a set of binary tables. The interaction... (Update) Context of citations to this paper: More ...the sample size. Mining environment
With the world population crossing the six billion mark, our prime concern has shifted to carrying out developmental activities with minimal impact to the environment. Mining activity is one developmental activity which goes hand-in-hand with environmental degradation. However, it would be wrong and practically impossible to put an end to the mining industry in the same of environmental concern. The whole idea is more realistic when mining activities are carried out along with reclamation activities so that after the area in mined out it returns as close as possible to its original land cover and local environment. Remote sensing provides an excellent tool to study the mining areas and to monitor the impacts of mining in a short and long term. The environmental effects of mining on all the three environmental amenities viz, land, water and air can be separately monitored. The following photograph/images show
