When the last MI application was lodged many locals - and others - objected on the grounds of a scheme being proposed within a protected landscape. But enquiry reveals that there are many UK precedents for such mixtures of development and conservation:

DATABASE
Online databases can be divided into 2 broad groups:
  • Databases that work through a web interface; Databases that work through a telnet interface.
  • Group 2 databases are a bit more difficult to work with than group 1 databases, and are therefore gradually being replaced by them. This page gives you step by step help in working with telnet. If you know of other relevant databases, please let us know
    Web-based databases
The following databases contain information on mining and the environment. In most cases, they cover other industries as well as mining. Best Practice Environmental Management in Mining Databases
The Case Studies Database provides examples supplied by the Australian mining industry of mine sites where best practice principles are being applied. Each case study sets out the problems faced at that site; how they were overcome; benefits which have resulted; and the lessons learned along the way.
The Technical References Database lists up to five references for each of 70 environmental issues.

Ceruti, S. Joe McCarthy Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center This paper documents progress to date on a research project, the goal of which is wartime-event prediction. It describes the operational concept, the data-mining environment, and data-mining techniques that use Bayesian networks for classification. Key steps in the research plan are as follows: 1) implement machine learning;2) test the trained networks; and3) use the technique to support a battlefield commander by predicting enemy attacks.Data for training and testing the technique can be extracted from the object-oriented database that supports the Integrated Marine Multi-Agent Command and Control System (IMMACCS). These data were derived from message traffic generated during U.S. Marine Corps exercises. The class structure in the IMMACCS data model is especially well suited to support attack classification. ... Environmental management in the mining sector
    Introduction
The mining policies of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania are centred on the promotion of investment in the mining sector. Their intention is, however that this development should be environmentally and socially sustainable. In order to do so, the institutional capacity of the governing bodies should be reinforced to ensure the evaluation, monitoring and control of the development of industry. It is imperative that environmental impact assessments of new mining projects are carried out at the feasibility stage in order to insure adequate protection of the environment for present and future populations, in particular the long-lasting protection of water resources. The implementation of the capacity to manage the environment is an essential requirement for the sustainable development of the industry in harmony with the local communities and is a key element for a favourable climate for private investment.

    Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Program
    Idaho Mining And The Environment
Mining's concern for the environment begins with exploration. Using their knowledge of the Earth's formation and state-of-the-art Idaho Geological Survey Maps, modern-day prospectors can concentrate their exploratory efforts at precise locations. The rock captured in the center of a drill, called a core sample, is examined by geologists for signs of mineralization. In Idaho, these exploratory projects are often restricted by weather and cost; an average of a quarter-million dollars apiece. Land disturbed by exploration activity is reclaimed, whether or not minerals are found. Before a single shovel of dirt is moved, a variety of environmental and engineering studies must be conducted. It may take two to five years and millions of dollars to complete this second phase. Mining is heavily regulated by both the state and federal governments. An Environmental Impact Statement is required along with state and federal permits and a period of time set aside for public comment. Today, mining companies must develop a long-term plan which includes not only the mining process, but a program to rehabilitate the land once the mining stops. The life of a mine may vary from several years to over a hundred years, depending on the size of the ore body and the market for the mineral it produces. Before, during and after this mine life cycle, great care is taken to protect the environment. Today, a large amount of the money generated from mining is being put back into the ground.

    40. Environment: De Beers Canada
the EMS is to identify and mitigate impacts during planning and operation, and toleave a productive, selfsustaining and hazard-free post-mining environment.
    http://www.debeerscanada.com/files/environment.html
As the world's leading diamond mining company, De Beers is committed to the development of local policies and procedures to minimize the impact of mining on the natural landscape, and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the communities in which we operate. De Beers' commitment to best environmental management practices has been recognized in other areas where we operate. We recognize that conditions in Canada are unique and we will strive to attain a comparable level of achievement in our Canadian Environmental Management System (EMS). At the end of 2001, all of De Beers' Canadian exploration offices achieved ISO 14001 certification . This represents an inportant milestone in the company's environmental management program.
