I. Identification
1. The Issue
Mining has been an important sector of the Peruvian economy since the Spanish Conquest. Traditionally it has contributed about half of the Country's export revenue. After over twenty years of isolation from direct foreign investment, the mining scene is changing. Political and economic stability have brought renewed interest in Peru as a resource rich investment opportunity for foreign companies. Peru has also been very active in pursuing foreign exploration partners and mining joint ventures through a variety of incentives and the removal of restrictions. The mining industry boom is exemplified by the excavation of iron resources. The purchase in late 1992 of the state iron producer by the Shougang Corporation of China resulted in an immediate 35% increase in iron output by the year 1993. As other entrants to the iron mining promise to flood this market, long neglected environmental issues, both past and present, must be confronted by the Peruvian government.

Project Summary Funding Publications ... AI Lab Personnel Project Summary Recent advances in high throughput (and often automated or semi-automated) data acquisition technologies, digital storage technologies, computers and communications have made it possible to gather and store large amounts of data on plants. As a result, research groups are generating large volumes of data. In order to translate these advances in high-throughput data acquisition into fundamental gains in scientific understanding calls for development of software tools that allow integrated retrieval and analysis of the individual databases. The design and implementation of such tools has to address several challenges in computer and information sciences:
  • In many instances, the data sources are physically distributed (e.g., at multiple laboratories and data repositories). This calls for the use of

Uranium Mining in the Northern Territory
Most of Australia's uranium is concentrated in the Northern Territory, in the ruggedly beautiful Alligator Rivers area east of Darwin. Most of the Alligator Rivers Region falls within Kakadu National Park. The largest single deposit is Jabiluka which ERA is now planning to mine. The Northern Territory is home to Ranger (links to the Anti-nuclear Alliance of WA website on Ranger), one of the two operating uranium mines in this country. The Alligator Rivers Region contains several other uranium deposits. The Nabarlek mine operated from 1979 to 1989, and has been decommissioned. The Koongarra uranium deposit in Kakadu has not been developed despite persistent attempts by Koongarra Ltd. West Arnhem Land Uranium Exploration - Significant uranium exploration is continuing in the east of the area, in Arnhem Land. Past uranium mining activities are still causing problems in the South Alligator area and at Rum Jungle, 80 kms south of Darwin.
Uranium mining in the Kakadu region represents the worst sort of industrial development in one of Australia’s most significant places.

Welcome to Industry
Environment Australia is working with Australian companies to improve their environmental performance. It has adopted a two-pronged approach: encouraging improved environmental management practices through partnership arrangements with industry, and taking action to minimise the adverse environmental impacts of hazardous materials and waste products. It is also implementing measures to improve environmental performance of its own operations and working with other Commonwealth departments.
Partnership Activities
Environment Australia works with industries to promote eco-efficiency and its benefits for business and the environment, and to minimise waste. Eco-efficiency involves improving the efficiency of industrial practices and processes in order to reduce resource use and wastes. This in turn reduces business costs. Eco-efficiency tools are being developed to help industries assess, improve and report on their environmental performance. Environment Australia is working with industry on product stewardship waste prevention and where there is considerable activity including; packaging, construction, electric and electronic, waste oil, tyres, end of life of vehicles, and batteries. To improve the management of waste oil nationally, transitional assistance will be provided over the next three years to help industry to implement product stewardship arrangements.
