Tour Guide Systems for Very High Noise Environments
In very high noise environments, the headset is a key element in providing intelligible communication. Integrated Audio offers systems that utilizes the latest in noise attenuating avionics style headsets. The attendees wear a headset that provides up to 23 dB of noise isolation at specific frequencies. The tour guide wears a similar headset which includes an integral, noise-canceling microphone. This microphone is mounted on a miniature "boom" arm that positions the microphone in front of the tour guide's mouth. These headsets are available with either 'over-the-head' or 'behind-the-head' adjustable headbands. The 'behind-the-head' headband allows the system to be used while wearing hardhats. Airport Authority
As a community-based organization, Vancouver International Airport Authority is committed to the long-term health and vitality of our surrounding communities. We recognize that our success as a global operator comes from our dedication to environmental excellence and our responsibility in communicating our plans and activities to our communities.
Environmental Excellence
Safety, security and environmental excellence are the underlying objectives guiding all our initiatives.
We are committed to operating and developing the airport in an environmentally responsible manner. We continue to improve environmental management systems with the goal of being certified to ISO 14001, an international environmental management standard.
The Environment, Health and Safety Management System was developed specifically for the Airport Authority. Motivating and empowering employees to improve environmental, health and safety performance is important to the Airport Authority. To help achieve this, regular events and workshops are held, such as boat trips on the Fraser River, a health and safety fair, intranet games and entertaining presentations to staff.
Environmental Mission: to ensure that activities undertaken at YVR are carried out in an environmentally responsible manner; in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and accepted management practices; and with sensitivity to community and public concerns.

Project Leader
Interior noise in a vehicle, either arising from the heating and cooling systems or from the contact between the tire and the road, can be distracting to drivers. This project focuses on reducing the interior noise in a vehicle by alleviating noise generation at the source, and by cancelling any residual generated noise. For airborne noise from heating and cooling systems, investigators are studying multiple-fan systems and speed/phase control of each fan as a potential way to achieve noise control. For structure-borne noise, investigators are reviewing the effectiveness of various approaches to develop road noise control systems. Investigators

Further to its 1996 Green Paper (COM(96)540) , the European Commission developed a new framework for noise policy, based on shared responsibility between the EU, national and local level, and including measures to improve the accuracy and standardisation of data to help improve the coherency of different actions. This document was followed by the Commissioner’s speech in Copenhagen in 1998 , and lead to a comprehensive set of measures, including:
  • The creation of a Noise Expert Network , whose mission is to assist the Commission in the development of its noise policy. A new Directive on Environmental Noise aimed at requiring competent authorities in Member States to produce strategic noise maps on the basis of harmonised indicators, to inform the public about noise exposure and its effects, and to draw up action plans to address noise issues. The Directive on Equipment Used Outdoors that simplifies the legislation about many noisy equipments.

    Experts agree that continued exposure to noise above 85 dBA over time, will cause hearing loss. To know if a sound is loud enough to damage your ears, it is important to know both the loudness level (measured in decibels, dBA) and the length of exposure to the sound. In general, the louder the noise, the less time required before hearing loss will occur. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (1998), the maximum exposure time at 85 dBA is 8 hours. At 110 dBA, the maximum exposure time is one minute and 29 seconds. If you must be exposed to noise, it is recommended that you limit the exposure time and/or wear hearing protection. Measure Up and Turn it Down: Decibel Levels Around Us The following are decibel levels of common noise sources around us. These are typical levels, however, actual noise levels may vary depending on the particular item. Remember noise levels above 85 dBA will harm hearing over time. Noise levels above 140dBA can cause damage to hearing after just one exposure.

    FOREWORD
    Noise is an important environmental consideration for highway planners and designers. It can annoy and cause psychological or physiological harm, depending on frequency characteristics and loudness. The U.S. Department of Transportation and State transportation agencies are charged with the responsibility of optimizing compatibility of highway operations with environmental concerns. Highway noise problems have been addressed by numerous investigations, including evaluations of the following:
  • noise sources and highway noise reference energy mean emission levels;
