Sustainability Workshop by B.J. Novitski Along with the recent surge in knowledge about, and adoption of, sustainability practices has come a realization that senior staff in architecture firms are confronting topics that scarcely existed when they were in architecture school. In some cases, learning new technologies can be assigned to junior staff. But when the topic, like sustainability, is so integrated in the very art and science — and business — of design, it's time for senior staff to go back to school themselves. Rather than delegate the responsibility for teaching to outside parties, the large international architecture and engineering firm Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK) recently produced a three-day sustainability workshop and invited the firm's leading designers and project managers from offices around the world. This conference represents HOK's commitment to integrating sustainable design principles regardless of a project's geography, culture, industry, building type, or budget. It also affirms their intention to instill such expertise throughout the firm, rather than creating a special practice or business unit. The workshop took place in St. Louis, Missouri in October 2001 and drew more than 50 HOK participants from offices as far away as London and Hong Kong. The hands-on event provided opportunities to share information, ideas, and resources for incorporating sustainability throughout the firm.

Sustainability Pays Off by Michael Miller, AIA Conventional wisdom holds that the best way to formally "green" a project is to integrate sustainable thinking into the design process from the beginning. Getting everyone on the team working together early toward this common goal is still the best approach. But it's not the only way to design a sustainable building. That's a lesson learned by the design team — led by Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc. (HOK) — that designed Emory University's new eight-story, 325,000-square-foot (30,000-square-meter) Whitehead Research Building in Atlanta, Georgia, now the largest biomedical research building in the southeastern United States. Taking Aim at LEED A few months after Whiting-Turner began construction in March 1999, Emory policy made LEED Although the HOK Atlanta team did not work with the LEED checklist from the beginning, they found that many of its requirements had been satisfied as part of their standard design process. Stuart Lewis, HOK's sustainable design manager for the project, had already been developing environmentally conscious specifications. The team had incorporated sensible architectural features such as daylighting and energy-efficient building systems, including energy recovery and lighting controls. Editoral Environment, sustainability and health: the learning curve steepens Recent international strife is showing that a divided, unequal and insecure world is inimical to peace, wellbeing and health. We should be seeking a sustainably ordered world, and not a political New World Order. MJA
The dramatic events The interdependence, reciprocity and increasing connectedness of the world's nations are now more evident than ever before. We are "globalising". This, in turn, entails an increased flow of information that reveals economic disparities, inequalities of trading regimens, persistence of poverty in many poor populations, and the magnitude and ubiquity of serious environmental deterioration. . . . even in the modern, affluent, urbanising world, humankind is dependent on intact life-support systems and is subject to the constraints of environmental carrying capacity. Here, though, there is another tension. Despite the incipient evidence of global-scale environmental damage such as climate change and biodiversity losses, and the marked widening of the rich-poor gap over recent decades

Feedback Environment/Sustainability Panel The Council is required by law to introduce arrangements for Overview and Scrutiny Committees (which the Council has chosen to call Panels) which will make recommendations on the development of policies and will hold the Cabinet to account for their actions. Overview and Scrutiny Panels have no delegated powers to take decisions on behalf of the Council. Each Overview and Scrutiny Panel will comprise between 7 and 14 councillors with places allocated according to the political balance of the Council. Where required by law, non-councillor co-optees serve in a voting capacity. Each Panel is also encouraged to co-opt suitable non-councillors, in a non-voting capacity, to assist it in its work. Overview and Scrutiny Panels have extensive powers to conduct research, carry out consultations, hold investigations, undertake visits, encourage community participation, liaise with other organisations, invite advisers and experts to assist them and question members of the Cabinet, and (in some circumstances) Chief and Senior Officers about their decisions and performance.

HOME SEARCH CONTACTS FEEDBACK ... SITE INDEX Environment, Sustainability and Health A. Environment, Sustainability and Health The Issue Health and the environment are intimately related; bad environments can be a cause of ill health, even mortality. Good environments contribute directly to quality of life and well being. Earlier environmental improvements in society came about because of the need to improve the public's health. However in recent years the two areas have moved away from each other. Health policy, resources and institutions have concentrated mainly on care and treatment of the unhealthy, with prevention taking second place. At the same time environmental policy has widened and tended to give insufficient priority to health-related objectives. In 1987 the World Commission on Environment and Development commented on the need for "development which meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." This gave rise in 1989 to the United Nations conference in Rio de Janeiro where 179 nations signed up to Agenda 21 setting out how all nations should work towards sustainable development. This contained a number of key themes:
  • Reducing the use of raw materials and energy Producing less waste and pollution Protecting fragile eco-systems Sharing wealth, opportunities and responsibilities more fairly between nations, within each nation, and between different social groups
