Sustainability Special Interest Group (Architectural Education)
This report presents the findings and proposals of the Sustainability Special Interest Group, funded by the Centre for Education in the Built Environment, which researched the learning and teaching of sustainability across the curriculum and in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in UK Schools of Architecture.
The research, carried out between May 2002 and June 2003, contacted every school and compiled a resource comprising: (i) case studies of strategic approaches to sustainability teaching; (ii) 130 approx. teachers of sustainability, their topics and contact details; (iii) descriptions of 48 best practice teaching programmes including: holistic design projects; theory and construction modules; environmental performance software and practical building projects; and addressing issues of bioregionalism and community participation through live projects, (iv) descriptions of Masters courses; (v) websites which support sustainability learning and teaching; and (vi) key publications.
Issues raised during the research and addressed in the paper include: relationship of pedagogy in design and in sustainability; making connections both within the architectural curriculum and between architecture and other disciplines on campus; how to fully integrate project work with formal environment/technology lectures and coursework; barriers, and ways of overcoming barriers to increased sustainability learning and teaching; benchmarking and indicators for teaching programmes.

Progress Update November 2001
Sustainability in Architectural Education A meeting of the Sustainability SIG was held at the AEE2001 Conference in Cardiff on 12th September 2001 to review progress and to discuss the next stages of work. An update of activities follows: Fionn Stevenson (University of Dundee), in conjunction with Andrew Roberts, CEBE Architecture Coordinator, will be getting electronic discussion underway using a series of questions as a framework. These are: How does teaching sustainable design differ from teaching design? How is sustainability engaged with in the school you represent? Should sustainability be taught as an explicit subject, or implicitly integrated within design and other coursework? What benchmarks do you actually use in your school for sustainable building/design, and what benchmarks would you like to see used? If sustainability is holistic, and involves other players and issues outwith architecture, what do we need to do to integrate these other considerations into building design learning? The group look forward to some lively contributions. Each member of the group is focusing on a particular area. Fionn Stevenson (fstevenson@architecture.dundee.ac.uk): the integrative/holistic studio/design approach and ecological design; Laz Erdel-Jan (l.erdel-jan@anglia.ac.uk): the pedagogy of sustainability; Michael Corcoran (m.j.corcoran@strath.ac.uk): environment, energy and technology; Helen Iball (H.Iball@Kingston.ac.uk): history, theory and social and economic aspects, in addition to collecting information on Masters courses; Sue Roaf (sroaf@brookes.ac.uk): briefing, benchmarks for sustainable building and case studies of student work. Bob Fowles (FowlesRA@Cardiff.ac.uk) is following up broad Agenda 21 and community/user participation teaching.
