Approximately 10% of children under the age of 15 suffer from migraine. Children and infants can be affected, especially where a family history of migraine exists. Migraine is a biological disorder of the central nervous system. For both adults and children, it is more than just a bad headache. Symptoms of migraine in children and infants can be similar to those in adults, or may take the form of abdominal migraine, where the child suffers stomach upset and pain instead of the typical head pain. In this case, it is always important to work with the doctor to rule out other causes of abdominal pain. During or before a migraine attack in a child, watch for a heightened sensitivity to light or noise; swelling of hands, ankles, legs or feet; nasal congestion; increased urination or nausea and vomiting. Some children with migraine suffer from recurrent motion sickness. During or before a migraine attack, a small percentage of children may complain of visual disturbances, such as zigzag lines. Most children will react to migraine by becoming withdrawn and will want to lie in a dark, quiet room. Often, the child will fall asleep and awaken without the migraine.

Almost everyone gets a headache now and then. The most common form of headache is the tension headache. This is usually easily treated with rest and relaxation. Migraine is not just a bad headache. Migraine is a biological disorder of the central nervous system which is often inherited from a family member. The head pain of migraine is often felt on one side of the head only, although it can switch sides, and less commonly can affect both sides at once. Along with throbbing pain in the head, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound stop migraine sufferers from carrying out their normal activities during an attack. More than three million Canadians (17% of the population) suffer from migraine. Both adults and children can suffer as can people from all walks of life and of all cultures and races. Migraine attacks can occur as infrequently as a couple of times a year, or almost every day.

Pharmacological interventions for recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) in childhood (Cochrane Review)
Huertas-Ceballos A, Macarthur C, Logan S ABSTRACT A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 21 November 2001. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Between 4% and 25% of school age children complain of recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) of sufficient severity to interfere with daily activities. For the majority of such children no organic cause for their pain can be found on physical examination or investigation. Although most children are likely managed by reassurance and simple measures, a large range of interventions has been recommended. Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of medication for recurrent abdominal pain in school-age children. Search strategy: The Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycLIT, LILACS and JICST were searched using a strategy combining (Recurrent OR synonyms) AND (Abdomen OR synonyms) AND (Pain OR synonyms). Where appropriate search filters were employed. In addition, researchers working in this area were asked to identify relevant studies. Selection criteria: Any study in which the majority of participants were school age children fulfilling standard criteria for RAP, and who were allocated by random or quasi-random methods to any drug treatment compared with a placebo or no treatment .

Professor Steven Schafersman of the University of Texas Writes a Synoposis Xenoestrogens Interfere with your Normal Hormones and Exacerbate Migraine Headache How to avoid Xenoestrogens and Lessen Migraine Headache Symptoms
Xenoestrogens are found in everyday synthetic materials. These materials were previously thought to be inert. Cut out the xenoestrogens from your life that exacerbate migraine headaches.
by Elizabeth Smith, M.D.
Xeno literally means foreign. So xenoestrogens means foreign estrogens. Some of the 100,000 registered chemicals for use in the world have hormonal effects in addition to toxic and carcinogenic effects. Also the synergistic effects are known to occur but also are largely exactly unknown. The field of xenohormones is new, and only been in existence since about 1991. Critics have proclaimed that these chemicals are for the most part "weak". The body's hormones are at levels of parts per trillion. However, many of the chemicals that affect the hormone systems are routinely found in the serum after sauna at parts per billion. In other words, these chemicals that affect the hormone systems of the human body occur at 100 to 1000 times greater concentration than that of the normal human hormones. One researcher demonstrated that two "weak" estrogens may act synergistically to give a strong estrogen response. Some of these Xenoestrogens like DDE (a metabolite of DDT) may persist in the body fat for decades. Many of these mimicking hormones were previously thought to occur in pesticides. However, many of the newly discovered xenoestrogens are found in every day previously thought to be inert materials.
