Background: Now a rare disease, acrodynia (painful extremities) primarily affects young children. The symptoms of irritability, photophobia, pink discoloration of the hands and feet, and polyneuritis can be attributed to chronic exposure to mercury. Pathophysiology: The most frequent sources of mercury prior to the legislated removal of the heavy metal from these preparations were calomel-containing anthelminthics, laxatives, diaper rinses, teething powders, fungicides in paint, repeated gamma-globulin injections, termite-protected wood (mercury bichloride), ingestion of watch batteries, and mercurial antibacterial ointments. This legislation corresponded to the virtual disappearance of acrodynia. Present-day cases reveal more novel exposure, such as mercuric oxide used to treat eyelid mites. It was suggested that the disease represented a delayed allergic reaction or hypersensitivity reaction since not all exposed to mercurial compounds develop the disease. Because the metal can be stored in the body to some extent and intolerance may develop long after exposure, morbid symptoms may appear weeks or months after the drug administration, with its cause escaping recognition. The deleterious effects of relatively small doses of mercury on the nervous system that are sometimes seen in the course of acrodynia add to the "acrodynic reaction." In acrodynia, no reflex dilatation of the peripheral vessels occurs in response to heat. Vasoconstriction is abolished only when the nerve supply to the arterioles is interrupted.

PINK DISEASE SUPPORT GROUP
HEATHER'S NEWSLETTER - JULY, 2001
Dear Member, Several years ago, I obtained a few teething powders from a small museum in Wagga Wagga. Four were of the Bayley's brand (with calomel in them) and four were Fisher's brand (without calomel). I have kept one of each for myself and sent the others to the USA to have the mercury content tested. Sallie Bernard, of the Coalition of Safe Minds group, has arranged for them to be tested so that we can ascertain how much actual mercury - considering that the calomel is a mercury compound - may have been ingested by Pink Disease babies if the instructions on the packets were followed. She will then compare this with the mercury body load of autism spectrum disorder sufferers who have had vaccines containing thiomersal (a mercury based product), which is the preservative used in many vaccines, INCLUDING childhood ones. The tests will be done on an inductively coupled plasma mass spectoscopy and are being done by Professor James Adams at the Arizona State University. Sallie has covered all costs involved with the tests, and the powders were sent to her on 14th June. There are a number of research studies being done regarding a possible mercury connection to autism/developmental disorders in the USA at present, and Sallie has promised to keep me up to date on any results which may interest us. I have recently read several books on autism, and even watched a TV show on SBS on Dr. Temple Grandin, an autism sufferer, and I can relate to many of her symptoms. I feel there is a definite connection there.

Knowledge of Acrodynia would meet with a state
of things very similar to that which now obtains; but that the
likeness of the past to the present would gradually become less
and less, in proportion to the remoteness of his period of
observation from the present day; that the existing distribution
of mountains and plains, of rivers and seas, would show itself
to be the product of a slow process of natural change operating upon more and more widely different antecedent conditions of the mineral frame-work of the earth; until, at length, in place of that frame-work, Acrodynia would represent only a vast nebulous mass, representing the constituents of the sun and of the planetary bodies.

PINK IS FOR POISON
FIFTY years ago, Australia was in the grip of an mysterious epidemic which took the lives of thousands of babies. Doctors worldwide were baffled by 'Pink Disease', as it was dubbed. Now some of the survivors are finding out what caused the condition which changed their lives forever and are demanding answers. Social Affairs Reporter CLARISSA BYE reports IN March 1950, little Heather Kemp was on the verge of walking. The curly-haired little baby from the country spent her days happily crawling around, following her three older siblings and her twin brother. When she was about nine months of age, she began teething and to soothe her, her mother Lillian bought some Steedman's Teething Powder and rubbed them on her gums. Almost overnight, baby Heather fell ill. The little tot couldn't stand to be touched, threw convulsions and stopped eating and drinking. Mrs Kemp resorted to carrying her baby around on a pillow, to avoid touching her. She bathed her with olive oil and cotton wool instead of water. Sunlight made the baby scream, so Mrs Kemp put blankets up to the windows to darken the room. Sometimes the girl's muscles went limp like a rag doll. Other times she would curl herself up into a ball and thrash around in her cot, banging her head against the wall or side rungs. Worst of all, she started to chew at her own hands, which had gone bright pink, along with her feet. Mrs Kemp made her tiny baby-size cotton mittens.
