B roken thermometers are the cause of numerous calls to the Poison Center. Thermometers with a silver line contain elemental mercury. Thermometers with a red or blue liquid do NOT contain mercury. There is much misinformation about mercury, its various forms and its dangers. Three different types of mercury exist, varying in their levels of toxicity. They are elemental mercury, inorganic mercury and organic mercury.
Elemental mercury
Mercury is an extremely heavy, odorless, silver colored liquid. Mercury exists as a natural element in the earth's crust. Elemental mercury is also known as metallic mercury, liquid mercury, liquid silver and quicksilver.
What are sources of exposure to elemental mercury?
Sources of elemental mercury in the home include broken mercury thermometers, broken fluorescent light bulbs, dental amalgam fillings, mercury containing latex paints, extraction of gold from ore using mercury, and contaminated clothing from workers in thermometer making plants. Elemental mercury is also used as a Mexican folk medicine to treat "empacho," a chronic stomach disorder.

“Garbage science!” That is how psychiatrist Eric London characterized what he had just heard from several fellow parents of autistic children. Some of the parents were also MDs or professionals in other fields. “If you presented your views to a journal-reading club at a medical school,” Dr. London continued, “they would be thrown out the door.” The view that Dr. London objected to so strongly-that perfectly normal children had become severely autistic shortly after being inoculated with vaccines containing large amounts of highly toxic mercury-had been presented by parent-attendees at a National Institutes of Health meeting on October 23, 2000. The conference on “The Role of the Environment in Autism,” was sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Continuing to deride what he called “garbage science,” Dr. London went on to explain that scientific progress proceeds like the building of a brick wall. “You start with a solid foundation to which you add, very systematically, experimentally proven facts, which fit neatly into place, brick by brick.” I arose and objected strenuously to Dr. London’s assertions, noting that Dr. London’s brick-wall model of scientific progress reflected a very common misconception. The brick-wall model is a useful way to teach science to beginning students: “Little steps for little feet.” But it is not the way scientific progress actually occurs in real life. I. SYMPTOM COMPARISON The overt symptoms of ASD and mercury poisoning, described in the literature and presented here, are strikingly similar. Summary tables have been provided after each section to aid in symptom comparisons. a. Affect/Psychological Presentation
Since its initial description in 1943 by Leo Kanner, a psychiatrist, autism has been defined primarily as a psychiatric condition. One of the three requirements for diagnosis is a severe deficit in social interactions (APA, 1994). Self and parental reports describe children and adults who prefer to be alone and who will withdraw to their rooms if given the chance (MAAP, 1996-1999). Even high functioning autistics tend to be aloof, have poor social skills, are unable to make friends, and find conversationdifficult (Tonge et al, 1999; Capps et al, 1998). Face recognition and what psychologists call "theory of mind" are impaired (Klin et al, 1999, Baron-Cohen et al, 1993). Poor eye contact or gaze avoidance is present in most cases, especially in infancyand childhood (Bernabei et al, 1998).
The second psychobehavioral diagnostic characteristic of autism is the presence of repetitive, stereotyped activities and the need for sameness (APA, 1994). Traits in this domain strongly resemble obsessive-compulsive tendencies in both thought and behavior (Lewis, 1996; Gillberg & Coleman, 1992, p.27), especially as the individual becomes more high functioning (Roux et al, 1998): "it [is] very difficult…to distinguish between obsessive ideation and the bizarre preoccupations so commonly seen in autistic individuals" (Howlin, 2000). Serotonin uptake inhibitors known to be effective for OCD also reduce repetitive behaviors in some autistic patients (Lewis, 1996). Most autistic subjects - 84% in one study - show high levels of anxiety and meet diagnostic criteria for anxiety disorder (Muris et al, 1998).

Mercury Sources in the Environment
Mercury gets into the environment as a result of human uses of mercury in products and in industry, and the combustion of fossil fuels that contain mercury. In addition, natural sources such as the degassing of the earth's crust, forest fires, the evaporation of seawater and volcanos contribute mercury into the environment. An estimated two-thirds of mercury in the environment is the result of human activities. Mercury contained in medical household, and industrial products gets into the atmosphere when the products are discarded, especially when they are incinerated. As much as 650 metric tons (650,000 kilograms) are put into the environment each year by manmade sources. Mercury is constantly cycling through the environment, evaporating into the atmosphere and returning to the ground as the result of gravity or precipitation. Mercury in the atmosphere can be deposited into lakes and rivers. When mercury hits water, some of it goes through chemical processes that change it into other forms of mercury, most notably methylmercury. Methylmercury is ingested by fish when it gets in the water then it bioaccumulates in fish and can cause many health problems when people eat the fish that are contaminated with mercury.
Keeping Mercury out of Wastewater
When a mercury containing product such as a thermometer is broken over the sink or improperly cleaned up after a spill, the mercury could be flushed down the drain and enter the wastewater stream of a household. Once the mercury enters a wastewater treatment plant, most of it enters biosolids during treatment. One of the forms wastewater treatment plants dispose of the generated solids is by land spreading it. The mercury then enters back into the environment, thus susceptible to being taken up by wildlife and further contamination. Another form of treatment of the biosolids is incineration as discussed above. This could be avoided by

    relatively low brain accumulations in mother and fetus, more rapid metabolism in infants resulting in greater conversion of ethylmercury to its toxic inorganic form vs slower metabolism in the mothers, and the involvement of mercury sensitive individuals rather than the average person.
    Third, the population distribution for mercury sensitivity, like that for nearly all toxins, is log normal; thus, statistically, a small percentage of the exposed population, if large enough, will be impaired at the lowest doses. The fact that some small percentage will be impaired at a very low dose is not just theoretical. It has been found true for certain strains of mice and rats, and it was also true for the form of mercury poisoning called acrodynia, which impaired approximately 1 in 500 children early in this century even at low doses. Clarkson describes acrodynia as being independent of dose and arising more from age and individual sensitivity.
    And finally, the risk assessment for vaccines does not take into consideration that infants may receive mercury from maternal sources, including maternal dental fillings and Rhogam shots which Rh negative women receive multiple times during pregnancy, each of which contains 30 micrograms of ethylmercury.
    Thimerosal is not a necessary component of vaccines, and every child can be fully immunized today with a non-thimerosal alternative. Immense harm has been caused by thimerosal in childhood vaccines. Do not risk permanent neurological damage to another child by allowing the continued use of thimerosal-containing vaccines. Official policy should err on the side of safety. Rather than waiting for formal studies to determine whether thimerosal should be taken out, the FDA should require that

Diagnostic criteria consist of impairments in sociality and communication plus repetitive and stereotypic behaviors (1). Although autism may be apparent soon after birth, most autistic children experience at least several months, even a year or more of normal development followed by regression, defined as loss of function or failure to progress (2,3,4). in vitro studies also provide insights into the mechanisms of Hg toxicity. More recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have determined that the typical amount of Hg injected into infants and toddlers via childhood immunizations has exceeded government safety guidelines on an individual (6) and cumulative vaccine basis (7). The mercury in vaccines derives from thimerosal (TMS), a preservative which is 49.6% ethylmercury (eHg) (7).

    IDS Overlap MCS Model 2B: Allergic Mercury Reaction in Genetic Subset
    Introduction. Human allergy to Hg has been recognized for a long time and although the specific genetic code is not worked out, this allergy is strongly suspected to be of genetic origin. It is estimated to affect between 2 and 5% of the human population (247,248). The North American contact hypersensitivity to Hg is reportedly 5.4% (249). Predisposition to mercury allergy has recently been investigated in genetically selected rodents. Interestingly, special rodent strains develop significant immune aberrations and autoimmune disease in Hg exposure, including exposure by implanted dental amalgam Hg configured as in human exposure (250,251). In humans carrying dental amalgams, the amounts of Hg released have been estimated within the range that would cause reactions in those genetically susceptible to Hg (251). Therefore the millions of humans who carry Hg amalgams are theoretically at risk for genetically induced reactions. (Whether those not genetically susceptible could also be directly toxically affected by mercury is unknown; many widely divergent opinions and research reports have been published over the last few decades (247,248,251-256). Recent reports connect amalgams with oral cavity ill-health (248,257), increase in antibiotic-resistant bacteria in oral and intestinal cavities (258), multiple sclerosis (259,260), psychological complaints such as depression, excessive anger, and anxiety (261), and cardiovascular symptoms such as fatigue and high blood pressure (262).

Methylmercury is produced by bacteria in the water and soil, and builds up in the tissues of fish. How can you be exposed? There are several ways in which you can be exposed to mercury. One way is by eating fish or shellfish contaminated with methylmercury, although the FDA has set a maximum permissible level of 1 part methylmercury in a million parts of seafood. Breathing vapors in the air from spills, incinerators, and industries that burn mercury-containing fuels is another method. Although there is a release of mercury vapors from dental work and medical treatments, researchers show that the amount is minimal, and most of it is either "blown out of the mouth or excreted," not deposited in the brain.

Recent epidemiological studies suggest that autism may affect 1 in 150 U. S. children. Exposure to mercury can cause immune, sensory, neurological, motor, and behavioral dysfunctions similar to traits defining or associated with autism, and the similarities extend to neuroanatomy, neurotransmitters, and biochemistry. Thimerosal, a preservative added to many vaccines, has become a major source of mercury in children who, within their first two years, may have received a quantity of mercury that exceeds safety guidelines. We intend to use a multi-faceted approach: (1) we will work aggressively with government agencies, legislators, manufacturers, and retailers to ensure the removal of mercury from medical and health products; (2) we will press for more research to understand scientifically how mercury in these products causes harm and how effective treatments can be developed for those already exposed; (3) we will create awareness campaigns to parents and clinicians to educate them about the issue; and (4) we will encourage investigations into how mercury has persisted in routine medical products like vaccines despite its known neurotoxicity. To accomplish these goals, we intend to be active in the scientific, legal, regulatory, legislative, and public awareness arenas.
