Undoubtedly there had been earlier descriptions. In brief, it is a clinical syndrome of progressive muscle weakness and respiratory paralysis associated with absent reflexes, which develops over a period of three to four weeks, usually following a viral or other infection. The annual incidence is about two per 100,000 so that, for example, about 50 to 60 cases would be seen in Sydney each year. Early diagnosis is important since death from rapidly developing respiratory paralysis can occur if the illness is not recognised, and because there are now specific forms of treatment such as plasmapheresis and intravenous immunoglobulin that can help speed up recovery, reduce disability and prevent complications. The Zane Edward Miller, MD Web Site The Life and Times of A Most Unique Man S o, just who is Zane Edward Miller, MD? He was a medical doctor trained and earned his American Boards in Neurology and Psychiatry. He was also a true humanitarian who loved people as well as an original thinker. To our knowlege he was also the worst surviving case of the neurological disorder known as Guillain-Barré Syndrome being completely paralyzed with this hideous disease for over 24 years. This web site is a tribute to his spirit, his Spartan will to survive and his tireless effort, in spite of a catastrophic illness, to help his fellow men and women to recognize and effectively deal with the preditors, psychopaths and sociopaths that make up the majority of our society and how not to be victimized by them. Zane Edward Miller was born on November 1, 1919 (really on Halloween 1919, but the hospital and his mother Lillian decided to make the recorded birthday the next day as it was a matter only minutes in either direction). He passed away suddenly, with his complete faculties, refusing to go to a hospital on April 28, 1996 at 3:30 AM. His two sons were present at the time. They said he passed away peacefully and looked with wonderment and astonishment to the upper corner of his bedroom just before he died. All medical doctors who had Zane Edward Miller under their care, as well as fellow alumni who knew that he was most likely dying (from the information given to them the day before), did not respond nor inquire as to his condition after his death. Nor did anyone send flowers or express condolance after his passing. A sad statement reflecting the condition of the medical practice in our society today.
