Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA, is a steroid hormone, a chemical cousin of testosterone and estrogen. It is made from cholesterol by the adrenal glands, which sit atop each kidney. For the first few years of life, the adrenals make very little DHEA, but around age six or seven, they begin producing it.. Production peaks in the mid-twenties, when DHEA is the most abundant hormone in circulation. From one's early thirties on, there's a steady decline in DHEA production and the average 75-year-old has only twenty percent of the DHEA in circulation that he or she had fifty years earlier. At all ages, men tend to have higher DHEA levels than women. Women with Addison’s disease have abnormally low levels of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) and androgens relative to their age. Researchers in Sweden designed a study, albeit a small one, to determine an appropriate dose of DHEA replacement therapy for nine women with Addison’s disease.
In a report in the journal of Clinical Endocrinology, June, 2000. researchers at the Departments of Medicine, University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden, administered a daily dose of 50 mg DHEA to five women and 200mg DHEA to four women. Blood samples, insulin sensitivity, and body composition were done before, during, and after DHEA treatment.

Vitamin of hope for people with Addisons disease Jan
Researchers in Britain have suggested that a single vitamin can help transform the lives of people with Addisons disease, a hormonal disorder. They found that the hormone DHEA can improve the psychological health of people with the disease and may also protect them from osteoporosis.
DHEA occurs naturally in the body and has been linked to ageing. It is not present in people with Addisons disease. The hormone is already available as a vitamin tablet in the United States. However, it is banned in other countries, including Britain, and there have been concerns that it could be taken as a performance enhancing drug.
But Dr Eleanor Gurnell and colleagues at the University of Cambridge have found the pill could offer hope to patients with Addisons disease. They enrolled 100 patients with the condition in a study. Half were given a DHEA tablet, the others were not.
After a year, they assessed the psychological health of patients using assessment tests. Patients also underwent scans to test their bone density. The researchers found that patients who had taken the vitamin were more positive psychologically. There were also indications that their bones were stronger, although the researchers acknowledged that more study is needed to determine if there is a direct link.

By On 29.01.03 19:18 GMT Does anyone have experience of managing a dog with Addisons Disease? We are awaiting the results of blood tests, but the vet is pretty certain that Stinky has it. Hopefully we've caught it early and there appears to be no damage to liver or kidney function. The vet is hopeful that it can be managed with drugs and regular blood tests.
(If it isn't Addisons, then the prospects look somewhat bleaker and they're gonna start looking for tumours
Any advice, support, suggestions, welcome.

Further information on Addisons Disease can be found at the following links. Addisons Disease is seen in Tollers at an age not common to other breeds and some veterinarians may not consider it when diagnosing a problem. Some Tollers have been diagnosed with it as young as 4 months of age. http://beaconforhealth.org/Addisons.htm http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/4263/addisons.html The following article was originally printed in "Toller Talk" the newsletter of the NSDTR Club of Canada, it was written by club member Dr. Janice Madjanovich DVM and is reprinted here with permission. Hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s Disease)
By Janice Madjanovich Hypoadrenocoricism is a condition which results when the outer layer, or cortex, of the adrenal glands fails in its secretion of the mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid hormones. It is often called Addison’s Disease after the man who first described this syndrome in humans in 1855. It is not a very common disease in dogs, but unfortunately Tollers have an increased incidence of this condition. Middle-aged animals and particularly females are most commonly affected. The adrenal glands which lie near the kidneys, have several important functions. Different areas secrete different hormones, with several different actions. The mineralocorticoids of which the main one is called aldosterone, are important in the regulation of electrolytes in the body. Their main action is to conserve sodium, chiefly by promoting reabsorption by the kidney. Water follows the sodium, so they indirectly affect the water balance of the body. They are also responsible for excreting potassium.

*For Medical Professionals only, registration required Addison's disease, (Thomas Addison, 1793–1860, English physician), a rare condition due to chronic destructive disease of the adrenal cortex, and characterized clinically by primary adrenocortical insufficiency. Secondary adrenocortical insufficiency, due to lack of ACTH, does not constitute Addison's disease. Most cases of Addison's disease are idiopathic, and may represent autoimmune destruction of the adrenal cortex. Clearly defined causes of Addison's disease are extremely rare, and include tuberculosis (see tuberculosis adrenal amyloidosis , bilateral adrenal metastases, bilateral haemorrhage, histoplasmosis, sarcoidosis (see histoplasmosis adrenal and sarcoidosis genitourinary tract and haemochromatosis . Historically, tuberculosis was a frequent cause of Addison's disease, but this is now uncommon.

*For Medical Professionals only, registration required Addison's disease, (Thomas Addison, 1793–1860, English physician), adrenal cortical insufficiency which may occur due to primary adrenal gland infarction or be secondary to surgery, pituitary failure or autoimmune disease, or be part of a spectrum of disease ( achalasia adrenal alacrima syndrome ). Clinical presentation is with fatigue, weakness, weight loss, anorexia, vomiting and abdominal pain. There may be hyperpigmentation of the mucosa of the mouth and rectum. Radiological manifestations include calcification of the adrenal glands but this is a frequent normal finding and must not be overinterpreted. Relative loss in cardiac size is a feature. The diagnosis is made by biochemistry.
