Agoraphobia is the intense fear of situations that may be difficult or embarrassing to leave. People with this phobia worry that they will not be able to get somewhere safe. They often worry about having a panic attack or panic symptoms like dizziness, vomiting, loss of control, or difficulty breathing. Sufferers usually fear large places like malls, theaters, grocery stores, or parks. They also fear large crowds or places where they feel trapped like traveling on a plane, driving in rush hour traffic, being on a bridge, or visiting the doctor. Usually, a person with agoraphobia can articulate what they fear or where they fear it. Although, sometimes they only know that they have a sense of dread. The person will begin to avoid the situations where he or she feels uncomfortable. Agoraphobia can worsen without treatment; in some extreme cases, that person can become trapped in his or her own home because he or she is too fearful to leave. Sometimes, the person can participate in activities or travel if a trusted companion goes with him or her.

Definition
The word agoraphobia is derived from Greek words literally meaning "fear of the marketplace." The term is used to describe an irrational and often disabling fear of being out in public. Description Agoraphobia is just one type of phobia, or irrational fear. People with phobias feel dread or panic when they face certain objects, situations, or activities. People with agoraphobia frequently also experience panic attacks, but panic attacks, or panic disorder, are not a requirement for a diagnosis of agoraphobia. The defining feature of agoraphobia is anxiety about being in places from which escape might be embarrasing or difficult, or in which help might be unavailable. The person suffering from agoraphobia usually avoids the anxiety-provoking situation and may become totally housebound. Causes and symptoms Agoraphobia is the most common type of phobia, and it is estimated to affect between 5-12% of Americans within their lifetime. Agoraphobia is twice as common in women as in men and usually strikes between the ages of 15-35.

Everybody experiences anxiety periodically. But some people experience more than their share, and suffer anxiety to such an extent that it becomes a disruptive force in their life. If you are such a person, this site can help you get the information and resources you need to learn how to tame this anxiety and enjoy your life. You may already know that these kinds of problems are called "anxiety disorders." Most of the people I work with dislike this name, and I don't care much for it either. But it's so widely used that we're stuck with it, and so I'll use it here. The name's not important. What's important is learning how to manage your anxiety so that it doesn't disrupt your life. For those of you who may have suffered a long time, and are feeling pretty hopeless and pessimistic about it, let me just mention that these problems are:

HELP FOR AGORAPHOBIA
Dear Alice, I have suffered from agoraphobia since the age of thirteen. I am now twenty. I have tried hypnotherapy counseling and psychologists and herbal tablets, but nothing seems to help me. Please, can you help a young, outgoing twenty-year-old who wants to start living! Dear Reader, Agoraphobia is a panic disorder, characterized by intense anxiety about being in places that would be difficult to escape, or where it might be embarrassing to experience symptoms of panic. For example, many people with agoraphobia fear leaving their homes alone, being in a crowd or standing in a line, being on a bridge, or traveling in various vehicles. Sometimes agoraphobia is experienced as a distinct condition, where one fears fainting, being trapped, having diarrhea in a public place, or otherwise feeling helpless and not receiving assistance. More commonly, agoraphobia occurs in people who also experience panic attacks. Panic attacks are intense feelings of fear and often doom, which usually build and peak within about ten minutes of onset. Some of the most typical symptoms include:
  • chest pain and/or heart palpitations
  • trembling
  • feeling faint or dizzy
  • shortness of breath or difficulty catching your breath
  • fear of dying
  • loss of control
  • excessive sweating
  • feeling nauseated
These attacks can be terrifying and physically overwhelming (people experiencing panic attacks often rush to the emergency room convinced that they are having a heart attack). Sometimes the attacks are prompted by a particular experience, and sometimes they are unprovoked. Once a person has had some panic attacks, they may begin to fear having one in public and thus develop an additional panic reaction to these situations, and therefore, agoraphobia.

PAX The organisation for people who suffer from panic attacks, agoraphobia, In 1990 The Royal College of Psychiatrists reported that more than nine million Britons will suffer from abnormal anxiety and fears at some time in their lives. My name is Alice Neville. In 1966 I founded THE OPEN DOOR the first self-help organisation in the world for people suffering from agoraphobia, a problem that had affected my own life from childhood to my mid-twenties when I overcame it altogether. Very soon we had 4,000 members, and the late Dr. Claire Weekes, Author of Self Help For Your Nerves came over from Australia to help and advise us, treating numbers of our members, lecturing all over Britain, appearing on TV, radio and writing articles for our newsletters. Because of family and career commitments I later handed over the running of TOD to the members themselves. Some years later I wrote a book (now out of print) entitled Who's Afraid of Agoraphobia? 10,000 copies were sold almost immediately and one of the first reactions was that many people suffered from panic attacks but were not necessarily agoraphobic. Others who contacted me were suffering from social phobia which until then I had always considered to be part of the agoraphobia syndrome. The result was a new book called just Who's Afraid...?

Panic attacks and agoraphobia But because of the seriousness of a panic disorder (not just one or two attacks) and the suicide risks (even higher than depression), it is crucial that competent professional treatment be sought immediately. Unfortunately, many professionals give ineffective drugs and don't use the best therapy methods. Panic attack victims are given 50% of all angiograms, which are unnecessary and quite expensive. So seek a panic disorder specialist , if possible, by calling your Mental Health Center or the Phobia Society of America. The therapist should insure that there is no physical problem, possibly prescribe anti-depressive drugs (not minor tranquilizers), and provide psychotherapy involving relaxation, exposure to the frightening situation, and cognitive restructuring. The causes of panic attacks are not known. Some psychiatrists think the body is simply malfunctioningsending a false message that it is suffocating (being unable to breathe is terrifying); thus, these theorists see it as purely a physical problem (actually, the onset of panic disorders are often associated with major stressful life events). Other theorists believe panic sufferers were born shy, nervous children with over-demanding, suffocating parents. Later, as over-dependent, eager-to-please but resentful-of-authority young people, they frequently have an intense confrontation with an authority. Their anger leads to the first panic attack, according to this theory. More recently, three major theories about panic have evolved:

Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia by Charles H. Booras, MD
All humans have a built-in "alarm system" that goes off when they feel threatened. This alarm starts chemical, physical and emotional changes that prepare us to either flee or fight the danger that triggered the alarm ("Flight or Fight Response). In some people, this alarm may go off unexpectedly, creating a very strong sense of threat when no danger is present. This "false alarm" is called a panic attack. It occurs in a condition known as panic disorder. What is a panic attack? A panic attack is a terrifying experience. Several physical and emotional signs occur during a panic attack. The most common signs are a racing heart, shortness of breath, faintness, hot or cold flushes, trembling, tingling, weakness and nausea, or feeling as though one's self or the external world has changed somehow. In addition, people with panic attack may fear that they are dying, or going crazy or are about to lose control. Some panic attacks come on very quickly and involve many intense feelings. Other attacks may be less intense and involve fewer feelings. The signs of panic attacks can change or stay the same from one attack to another. A panic attack sounds like a heart attack. Is it?
