OUR GROUP CONSCIENCE "... sometimes the good is the enemy of the best.” ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS COMES OF AGE, p. 101 I think these words apply to every area of A.A.’s Three Legacies: Recovery, Unity and Service! I want them etched in my mind and life as I “trudge the Road of Happy Destiny” (Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 164). These words, often spoken by cofounder Bill W., were appropriately said to him as the result of the group’s conscience. It brought home to Bill W. the essence of our Second Tradition: “Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.” Just as Bill W. was originally urged to remember, I think that in our group discussions we should never settle for the “good,” but always strive to attain the “best.” These common strivings are yet another example of a loving God, as we understand Him, expressing Himself through the group conscience. Experiences such as these help me to stay on the proper path of recovery. I learn to combine initiative with humility, responsibility with thankfulness, and thus relish the joys of living my twenty-four hour program.

When I heard that Al-Anon was a program in which we learn to keep the focus on ourselves, I wondered what others would think of me if I acted on that principle? Surely they would think me inconsiderate, thoughtless, and uncaring. Those were my complaints about the alcoholics in my life! I didn’t want to be that way. Instead, I tried to do things for others that seemed loving and generous, even when I didn’t want to do them. I couldn’t understand why I so often grew resentful after such actions.

Alcoholism In The Workplace:
A Handbook for Supervisors
Introduction Alcoholism in the Workplace Supervisor's Role Signs to Look for ... Appendix - The Disease of Alcoholism
INTRODUCTION
The National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence defines alcoholism this way: "Alcoholism is a primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychological, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortion in thinking, most notably denial." Alcohol is the single most used and abused drug in America. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), nearly 14 million Americans (1 in every 13 adults) abuse alcohol or are alcoholics. Several million more adults engage in risky drinking patterns that could lead to alcohol problems. The costs to society in terms of lost productivity, health care costs, traffic accidents, and personal tragedies are staggering. Numerous studies and reports have been issued on the workplace costs of alcoholism and alcohol abuse, and they report costs that range from $33 billion to $68 billion per year. Alcohol is a major factor in injuries, both at home, at work, and on the road. Nearly half of all traffic fatalities involve alcohol. Please see the

Rather than comprising a group requiring special attention due to their susceptibility to alcohol abuse, the elderly have far fewer drinking problems than other adults, are well aware of their reduced capacity for alcohol, and overwhelmingly find drinking an enjoyable, healthy, and prosocial activity.
The Star Ledger (Newark), July 29, 1998, p. A19
Stanton Peele In fact, more of the elderly misuse prescription medications than alcohol or else combine medications improperly with drinking. As for drinking alone, government surveys have shown that the oldest Americans have the fewest problems of any age group. In one national survey conducted by the Alcohol Research Group, a half a percent of women over sixty reported a symptom of alcohol dependence (for example, binge drinking or a missed meal as a result of drinking) over the previous year, compared with 18 percent of women age 23-29. The survey, funded by a division of SAMSHA, said women in their sixties have one-35th the likelihood of abusing alcohol of women in their twenties.

This is My Story Home Links Above is the Ship I served on from 1958 to 1960 I was born on August the 13th on a Friday, the proverbial second son of a second son. I started drinking when I was about seventeen. You might say I was an alcoholic, it was so bad that no one knew I was a drunk till the day I stopped drinking. I joined the Navy things got even worse; did you ever hear the old saying (like a drunken sailor)? That was me. I would drink while I drove from bar to bar; I was not really enjoying it. It came to a point that my friends and I would go from bar to bar to start a bar fight, I thank God that no one was killed or enjured seriously. At times on Sunday while others were seeking God I would be in a bar drinking tomato juice and beer for my breakfast. I had a vicious temper and was always looking for a fight. My mouth was like an open sewer with the language I spoke, you would call it fluent profanity. I thought I would live forever till one day my best friend died in a freak accident, then I knew that life was temporary and death was just a heart beat away: I asked myself if I died right now where would I spend eternity. I knew that there was a God out there somewhere and that He had something better for me. The Bible says John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life".
