Alopecia Areata
Understanding and Coping with Hair Loss
WENDY THOMPSON, M.A.
JERRY SHAPIRO, M.D. FOREWORD BY VERA H. PRICE, M.D. Alopecia areata is a poorly understood, unpredictable disorder that affects more than 2.5 million men, women, and children in the United States and Canada. Causing patchy hair loss on the scalp and sometimes elsewhere on the body, this mysterious, noncontagious condition can be treated, but it cannot yet be cured. Alopecia Areata: Understanding and Coping with Hair Loss
  • New drug therapies and their side effects, from topical and systemic immunotherapy to minoxidil, anthralin, and photochemotherapy Current research on experimental treatments Medical counsel about alternative remedies
Thompson and Shapiro also offer practical strategies for living with alopecia areata, which can go into and out of remission without any apparent reason. They discuss the physical and psychological adjustments to wearing a hairpiece and give pointers on selecting, securing, and maintaining a wig, whether human hair or synthetic, custom- or ready-made. They also discuss how to deal with insurance companies to get compensation for a hairpiece. Alopecia Areata includes a chapter devoted to the special needs of children with this condition and concludes with an epilogue that tells the story of a day in the life of a woman with alopecia areata, illustrating the various challenges she faces and the strategies she uses to cope with them. With frankness, hope, and good humor, Thompson and Shapiro strive to enhance the lives of people suffering from alopecia areata and to ease the pain that comes with living in a world that often values external appearances over all else.

Alopecia Areata
The term alopecia means hair loss. In the form of alopecia known as alopecia areata , round bald patches appear suddenly, most often affecting the scalp. However, any hair-bearing area can be affected. Alopecia areata can occur at any age. Alopecia areata Typical patch on the scalp Alopecia universalis
What causes alopecia areata?
Alopecia areata is often discovered by a hairdresser as there are usually no symptoms. The hair stops growing and then falls out from the roots. Alopecia areata is considered to be one of the autoimmune disorders - lymphocytes aound the hair follicles release chemical messengers (called cytokines) that reject the hair for unknown reasons. Alopecia areata may occur in more than one member of the family, and such families may develop other autoimmune diseases such as pernicious anaemia and vitiligo . It is also more common in patients with chromosomal disorders such as Down's syndrome. Alopecia areata is not contagious and is not caused by any food. It sometimes starts after a stressful event, but this is not usually the case. Alopecia areata has three stages. First there is sudden loss of hair, then enlargement of the patches of hair loss. Lastly new hair grows back. This may take months and sometimes years. One patch can be falling out while another is regrowing.

"Alopecia" is the medical term for baldness. According to the American Medical Association, 95% of all cases of alopecia involve androgenetic alopecia, also known as common baldness or, in men, male pattern baldness. Androgenetic alopecia is an inherited condition that affects about one-quarter of all men before the age of 30 and two-thirds of all men before the age of 60. It is less common and less extreme in women. It occurs predominantly in children and young adults but it can also develop in older adults, resulting in an overall thinning of all the scalp hair rather than complete baldness. Alopecia areata and androgenetic alopecia are types of nonscarring alopecia, temporary hair loss that doesn’t result from damaged hair follicles. Scarring alopecia is permanent hair loss that results from damaged hair follicles. There are other forms of scarring and nonscarring alopecia caused by skin diseases and underlying illness.

Hereditary thinning is known by many different names: androgenetic, or androgen-dependent alopecia; common baldness; diffuse hair loss; and male or female pattern baldness. Hereditary thinning is, by far, the most common kind of baldness. About half of all men over the age of 40 experience hair loss due to male pattern baldness. In fact, it is so common that many people think it is a normal part of the aging process. Although hereditary baldness is not as common among women, as many as 20 million American women and 30% of all Caucasian women are affected by female pattern baldness. Causes People who inherit genes for baldness (or thinning) from either parent are likely to experience hair loss or thinning during their adult life.

Androgenic alopecia is the name for male and female pattern baldness. In androgenicalopecia the hair loss occurs slowly over years. Androgenic alopecia.
http://www.skinsite.com/info_androgenic_alopecia.htm
Androgenic Alopecia I. Definition: Androgenic alopecia is the name for male and female pattern baldness. In androgenic alopecia the hair loss occurs slowly over years. It can start anytime after age twenty. There is usually a family history of hair loss. In women, the hair slowly becomes thin throughout the scalp and bald spots usually do not occur. Men first develop hair loss at the temples, followed by an enlarging bald spot on top of the head. II. Causes:
  • Androgenic alopecia is thought to be due to the hair growing tissue's sensitivity to hormones; this sensitivity is due to genetic factors. Not contagious, not caused by foods, not the result of nervousness. Androgenic alopecia often runs in families.
III. Treatment:
  • Rogaine (minoxidil) is a medicine used to treat high blood pressure which when applied to the skin causes hair growth in some individuals. One out of ten people who use Rogaine will grow hair. Rogaine will slow the rate of hair loss in five out of ten patients who use it. The other four out of ten are wasting their money. Hair transplants are another option for treating androgenic alopecia. Plugs of hair are removed surgically from areas with plenty of hair and implanted in the areas with little hair.

Hair Loss: Alopecia Areata, Totalis, Universalis Sudden patchy hair loss: People with alopecia areata lose hair on their scalp in smooth round patches typically causing bald spots about an inch (2cm) across. Sometimes the patches are larger, and the condition can include the loss of all hair on the head (alopecia totalis), and even the loss of all hair on the body (alopecia universalis). Temporary Loss: Alopecia areata usually results in temporary loss of hair, with the bald patches eventually growing new hair. The condition is often unpredictable however, and new bald spots can occur periodically. The size of the bald patches, the number of patches, the time lapse between loss and normal regrowth, and the duration of episodes are unpredictable. Auto-Immune Condition: The exact cause of alopecia areata is unknown, however researchers believe it is an auto-immune condition. This means that the body's immune system acts as if the hair follicles or hair are "foreign tissue" and must be eliminated from the body. White blood cells attack certain hair follicles and cause hair growth to stop. Typically only the hair and follicles are affected, and there are no other symptoms. 1% of US Population: In the United States about 1% of the population have experienced alopecia areata, however about 90% of these people have only had periodic episodes. Heredity plays a role in approximately 20% of alopecia areata cases.

Hair Loss: Androgenetic Alopecia: Cause of 95% of all hair loss Male and Female Pattern Loss: Both men and women experience androgenetic alopecia, or pattern hair loss, although men generally experience a much greater degree of loss. In men, the pattern of loss starts with the hairline or back of the head, advances to thin the top of the head, and often leaves just a fringe of hair extending from ear to ear across the back of the head. In extreme cases, even this fringe is lost eventually. Diffuse Hair Loss in Women: In women, pattern loss is more diffuse, and occurs over a broader area, including the top and sides. Also, women do not generally have bald spots, but rather have overall thinning hair. In many cases of diffuse hair loss in either men or women, over 50% of the hair can be lost before the results are readily apparent. Everyone Has the Same Rate of Loss: The rate of hair loss in people with pattern baldness is about the same as for other people. People with pattern hair loss do not shed hair faster or in greater quantities than anyone else. The difference is that their new hairs do not grow in at the same rate as the old hairs are being shed. A person with pattern hair loss has some follicles that have been genetically programmed to begin to spend more time in the resting stage, and as a result of these resting follicles, fewer new hairs grow to replace those that are shed.
