New Additions July 12, 2001 ARC is an outgrowth of the Western Amputee Support Alliance (WASA). The WASA website was established In October, 1997, as a place to post written information of interest to people with amputations, and referrals to amputee support groups in the Western United States. Recently, the Directors decided to limit the WASA website to Western U. S. support group referrals only and to establish the ARC website as a place where expanded written information and other resources for people with amputations and support group leaders could be posted.
Mission
ARC's goals are to:
  • provide information about starting and maintaining a peer support program,
  • feature materials that support group leaders could use to educate themselves about the "care and feeding" of a support group,
  • provide information and topics that might be shared with their members at meetings, in newsletters, or as information sheets,
  • provide a book list to help support groups build their libraries

Congenital amputee beats the odds
November 4, 1997
Web posted at: 4:57 a.m. EST (0957 GMT) From Correspondent Brian Cabell ATLANTA (CNN) In an era in which whining has become an art form and victimhood has become a science, 11-year-old Kyle Maynard stands apart from the crowd. He's a football player with a small difference; he was born with arms that end above the elbows and legs that end above the knee, a congenital amputee. Having conquered school this straight-A student writes, pencil pinned between his arms, with better penmanship than most adults Kyle decided to take on athletics. Against all odds and amid skepticism, he willed himself into a football player.
CNN's Brian Cabell reports Watch Kyle in action. (CNN) 995K/26 sec./160x120
QuickTime movie "Yeah, there were a couple of doubts that I couldn't," Kyle says. "But I don't really look at those. I just look at what I can do and what I will do." What he can do and does is play nose tackle for the Collins Hill National Eagles, a youth league football team in Gwinnett County, Georgia, northeast of Atlanta. He loved watching football and when he saw a flyer for football tryouts, he begged his parents to sign him up. "When he said he wanted to go, we put that in motion," his father

Determination, technology help amputee athlete
August 19, 1996
Web posted at: 4:15 p.m. EDT From Correspondent Ann Kellan (CNN) Al Mead, a past Paralympic medalist, didn't make the cut for this year's Games in Atlanta. But he's living proof of how determination and technology are helping amputees compete on the athletic field and in everyday life. Mead lost his left leg at age 9 in a fall that cut off blood circulation. Now, at 37, he rises with the sun to work out before going to his office job. He also gives inspirational speeches, explaining how he proved to himself and skeptical neighborhood buddies one day that he could still play football and run. (250K AIFF or WAV sound) Al ran for a touchdown that day and hasn't stopped running since. He broke world records in the 100, 200 and 400 meter races during Paralympic trials. Competing in the long jump, he won a gold medal in the 1988 Seoul Games, then took silver in the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics.
State-of-the-art legs
Even a "pretty darn heavy" wooden leg that rubbed blisters on his stump did not stop him. Now, the wooden leg is gone, replaced by two state-of-the-art prostheses one for everyday use, the other for sprinting. The socket that fits the leg to his stump is custom-made. The inside liner is flexible and the padding over the stump is a breathable fabric that prevents painful rubbing.

Amputee gets donor's arm, hand in groundbreaking surgery
In this story:
September 25, 1998
Web posted at: 12:54 a.m. EDT (0454 GMT) LYON, France (CNN) An international team of surgeons is optimistic about an experimental hand-and-forearm transplant operation performed on a man whose own arm was amputated 14 years ago. The 48-year-old businessman, Clint Hallam , underwent Wednesday's delicate 13.5-hour surgery at the Edouard Herriot hospital in Lyon in central France. Hallam lost his hand in a circular-saw accident in 1984. Doctors say there's a 50-50 chance that the transplanted limb will not be rejected by his body, partly because of new drugs that are better able to control the body's immune system, which rejects foreign cells. The surgical breakthrough "gives hope to millions of victims of workplace and domestic accidents, survivors of war or land mines and individuals born with hereditary deformities," said Dr. Jean-Michel Dubernard, who led the surgical team.
