ABDOMINAL AORTA The abdominal aorta is the section of the aorta located below the diaphragm.
ALVEOLUS (pl. Alveoli) Alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood carried past them in capillaries. Adults have roughly 300 million microscopic alveoli in their lungs.
ANEURYSM An aneurysm is a weakening in the muscular walls of a part of an artery which results in an enlargement or sagging of the damaged section. Aneurysms may be caused by a congenital defect, a degenerative disease, or a syphilitic infection. An aortic aneurysm may occur anywhere in the aorta. Aneurysms located in the ascending aorta or the aortic arch are frequently treated surgically. Aneurysms located in the descending aorta are usually treated medically and are only operated on if medical treatment fails. If an aneurysm ruptures, massive bleeding can result in hypotension, coma, and death.
ANGINA PECTORIS Angina pectoris occurs when the heart does not get enough oxygen-rich blood from the coronary arteries (often caused by a coronary atheroma). The pain associated with angina pectoris often begins as a suffocating feeling in the center of the chest and may spread out to the arms and jaw. If drug therapy does not increase the blood flow, a coronary angioplasty or coronary bypass grafting may be necessary.
ANGIOPLASTY An angioplasty is a procedure in which a small deflated balloon is guided into a section of clogged artery or vein through an X-Ray guided catheter (hollow tube). Once the balloon reaches the selected section it is inflated, thereby expanding the clogged area and permitting an increased blood flow (see also stent).

From the University of MissouriColumbia Health Sciences Center.Category Health Medicine Surgery Cardiothoracic......TMR or Transmyocardial Revascularization is laser heart surgery for relief of severeangina pectoris performed by Dr. James W. Jones at University of Missouri
    http://www.surgery.missouri.edu/tmr/
Transmyocardial revascularization (TMR) is a new laser heart surgery for relief of severe angina. This innovative heart procedure is an effective option for people with severe angina pectoris who are unable to benefit from other treatments. In clinical trials, TMR, also called transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMLR), has been shown to relieve pain and improve activity level. The surgeon uses a laser to open channels in the wall of the heart. These small channels restore blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle. This is thought to encourage the growth of small blood vessels, a process called angiogenesis. TMR may be considered for patients who have exhausted other treatment options. Candidates for TMR are often too ill to handle the stress of a major surgery, such as a coronary artery bypass graft or percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, who still have symptoms despite having had standard heart procedures and received maximum doses of medicine. The procedure is minimally invasive and does not involve opening the chest wall as traditional bypass surgery does. Laser revascularization does not require the presence of intact heart vessels of a certain size or quality for treatment to be effective. In fact, patients who have been warned by cardiologists that they would not benefit from or might not live through another heart procedure had successful TMR surgery.

    Introduction
Both beta-blockers and dihydropyridine calcium antagonists are effective anti-anginal agents, either alone or in combination [1,2,4,9]. Whilst monotherapy is frequently effective in ameliorating symptoms, it is sometimes necessary to resort to combination therapy, for example, using atenolol and nifedipine. Such a combination may have particular advantages for certain patients [1,2,4,9]. Additionally, it may also have the advantage of improving the side-effect profile of the individual drugs, thereby improving patient acceptability and compliance [2,9]. Although concomitant administration of atenolol and nifedipine is one of the commonest regimens used, the optimum dosage of the combination has yet to be established. Obviously, there has to be a balance between patient tolerance and clinical efficacy. In order to investigate this matter further, we studied varying dose levels of a fixed combination of these agents with respect to their side-effect profile, amelioration of symptoms and treadmill exercise capacity.

    Chest Pain
    What Is Chest Pain?

It's the middle of the night or maybe the beginning of a busy workday when you suddenly feel pain in your chest. You may try to ignore it at first, but the pain has you scared and worried. Could you be having a heart attack? Should you go to the emergency room?
Chest pain is one of the most common reasons people call for emergency medical help. Every year emergency room doctors see nearly 5 million Americans for this symptom.
Chest pain doesn't always signal a heart attack. Often it's unrelated to any heart problem. But even if the chest pain you experience has nothing to do with your cardiovascular system, the problem may still be important — and worth the time spent in an emergency room to have it evaluated.

    Causes
Chest pain has many possible causes, all of which deserve medical attention. The causes of chest pain fall into two major categories — cardiac and noncardiac causes.

Chronic Stable Angina Pectoris Back Angina pectoris
Anginal symptoms are regarded as stable if they have been occurring over several weeks without major deterioration. They typically occur in conditions associated with increased myocardial oxygen consumption (e.g. during exercise).
Angina is said to be unstable if pre-existing angina worsens abruptly for no apparent reason or when new angina develops at a relatively low work load or at rest. This form of angina is often associated with rupture of the atherosclerotic plaque and subsequent clot formation within the coronary artery.
Angina is variant or of the Prinzmetal type if it develops spontaneously with ST elevation on the electrocardiogram. This is usually due to an increase in coronary tone or spasm.

The National Cancer Institute funded the first three years of the study and subsequent years on data pertaining to cancer. In 1980 the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute began funding the cardiovascular portion of the study. Follow-up questionnaires have been administered every two years subsequently. Women's Physical Function Suffers More Than Men's From Cardiac-Related Chest Pain, Says Emory Researcher
ATLANTA Women with chronic chest pain associated with angina pectoris experience more detrimental effects on their quality of life than men, according to a study published in the January issue of the journal Pain. Angina pectoris occurs when the demand for blood by the heart exceeds the supply of the coronary arteries, causing a heavy or aching pain or discomfort in the center of the chest. The condition is often triggered by physical activity, mental stress or emotional upset. Laura Kimble, PhD, associate professor, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Emory University, along with colleagues from Emory and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, examined the gender differences in the characteristics of chronic stable angina of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. According to the study, there were more similarities than differences between men and women in self-reported chest pain characteristics. However, despite the similarities, women reported having poor physical function related to anginal pain.
