Low Graphics Anthrax attacks A Newsnight investigation raised the possibility that there was a secret CIA project to investigate methods of sending anthrax through the mail which went madly out of control. The shocking assertion is that a key member of the covert operation may have removed, refined and eventually posted weapons-grade anthrax which killed five people. In the wake of Sept 11th, the anthrax attacks caused panic throughout the States and around the world. But has the FBI found the whole case too hot to handle? Our science editor Susan Watts reported from Washington. SUSAN WATTS:
America's anthrax attack last autumn was second only to that on the Twin Towers in the degree of shock and anxiety it caused...Some even say the anthrax letters triggered sub-clinical hysteria in the American people...yet this, the first major act of biological terrorism the world has seen remains an unsolved crime... Initially the investigation looked for a possible Al-Qaeda or Iraqi link, then to a domestic terrorist, then inwards to the US bio-defence programme itself. But in the last four or five weeks the investigation seems to have run into the sand...There have been several theories as to why ...

Fact Sheet
also called splenic fever malignant pustule , or woolsorters' disease acute , specific, infectious, febrile disease of animals, including humans, caused by Bacillus anthracis , an organism that under certain conditions forms highly resistant spores capable of persisting and retaining their virulence in contaminated soil or other material for many years. A disease chiefly of herbivores (grass eaters), the infection may be acquired by persons handling the wool, hair, hides, bones, or carcasses of affected animals.

Anthrax is a rare infection which, in its most severe forms, is likely to prove fatal. There have only been four reports of anthrax in the UK since 1990, and in the US, the most recent case of respiratory anthrax is the first of this most severe respiratory form since 1978. What causes anthrax? Anthrax is caused by the organism Bacillus anthracis. In some parts of the world, this can be found in cattle or other hoofed mammals. It is infrequent in western Europe and the US, and is more likely to be found in animals in south and central America, south and east Europe, Asia and Africa. This bacteria can form spores which can either be eaten in contaminated meat, breathed in, or simply infect the skin directly through human to animal contact. Those at highest risk in the UK are those who directly handle dead animals, such as abattoir workers and tanners. An infected patient cannot pass on the disease to other people.

Web Sites Researchers Develop Simple Device to Detect Anthrax Spores Researchers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have demonstrated a prototype alarm device – similar to a smoke detector – that automatically monitors the air for the presence of bacterial spores, such as anthrax. According to an October 23 press release, a research paper published in Engineering in Medicine and Biology magazine says JPL's bacterial spore detection system is simple and designed for constant and unattended monitoring of spaces such as public facilities and commercial buildings. Researchers report that an alarm sounds when an increase in spore concentration is detected. A technician would then respond to confirm the presence of anthrax spores using traditional analysis. The instrument response time is 15 minutes, fast enough to help prevent widespread contamination. more DOCUMENTS October 3, 2002

How Anthrax Works
by Lee Ann Obringer
Where Does it Come From?

How Does it Spread?

What Happens When it Enters the Body?
... Lots More Information! The threat of anthrax as a biological weapon has become a real concern for everyone. Anthrax is a disease caused not by a virus, but rather by bacteria . There aren't any known cases of anthrax passing from one person to another, so it is considered to be noncontagious. It is still a large threat, however, because if it isn't recognized and treated quickly enough it can be deadly. Bacillus anthracis is the bacterium that causes the disease anthrax. It has historically affected herbivores like cattle, sheep or other grazing herds, but has also been a threat to humans who work with these animals and their by-products. While in the ground or on a surface, anthrax spores are relatively harmless, but once they come into contact with the right environment they begin to germinate. They need an environment that is rich in amino acids, nucleosides and glucose like those elements found in

Testing of suspected anthrax begins
Leavitt (left) and Harris appeared before a federal magistrate Thursday.
Sample of seized material taken from Las Vegas
In this story: February 20, 1998 Web posted at: 3:30 p.m. EST (2030 GMT) FREDERICK, Maryland (CNN) Testing began Friday to determine if the substance seized from two suspects now under arrest in Nevada is the potentially deadly bacteria anthrax, law enforcement sources told CNN. At least partial results from the tests were possible later in the day. A source familiar with the investigation said a sample of the substance was flown in from Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas and arrived on Friday morning at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, located in Frederick, Maryland. Larry Wayne Harris and William Job Leavitt Jr. were arrested by the FBI on Wednesday night in Henderson, a Las Vegas suburb and were charged on Thursday with possessing a deadly germ for use as a weapon. The two-count complaint alleges conspiracy to possess and possession of a biological agent.

Anthrax
Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis . Anthrax most commonly occurs in farm animals, but it can also infect humans. Symptoms of disease vary, but usually occur within 7 days after exposure. The serious forms of human anthrax are inhalation (a respiratory infection), cutaneous (a skin infection), and intestinal anthrax. Anthrax contamination was detected in U. S. Senate office buildings and at several other locations across the United States. The EPA has been working closely with the Capitol Hill Police, the U.S. Postal Service, the Centers for Disease Control, the FBI, and other agencies to ensure that existing anthrax contamination is quickly identified and thoroughly cleaned up, and also to prevent future exposures. While anthrax cleanup is a new challenge, EPA and its partners have assembled an effective toolbox for tackling it. In a very short time, we've significantly advanced the science and technology of detecting and cleaning up anthrax.

By Barbara Hatch Rosenberg 22 September, 2002 PURCHASE, N.Y. On this first anniversary of the anthrax attacks, a number of conclusions can be drawn even without an arrest by the FBI. First, the strain and properties of the weaponized anthrax found in the letters show that it originated within the U.S. biodefense program, where the necessary expertise and access are found. Government officials recognized that the anthrax source was domestic less than two weeks after they learned of the letters, and nothing in their investigation has led them to say otherwise since. One can also conclude that, given the origin of the anthrax and the warnings contained in the letters, the perpetrator's motive was not to kill but rather to raise public fear and thereby spur Congress to increase spending on biodefense. In this, the attacks have been phenomenally successful.
