Laparoscopic Surgery for Appendicitis What is an Appendix? What causes Appendicitis? What are the symptoms of appendicitis? How is Appendicitis Diagnosed? ... laparoscopic appendectomy What is an Appendix? The appendix is a small fingerlike tube. It is located in the right lower part of the abdomen where the small intestine ends and large intestine begins. What causes Appendicitis? Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. The inflammation usually results from obstruction of the opening of the appendix into the intestine. The obstruction is usually due to a piece of hard stool. Certain infections can cause swelling of the inner lining of the appendix and lead to the obstruction. In some parts of the world parasitic infections lead to appendicitis by blocking the opening of the appendix. The incidence of appendicitis has increased over the last 50 years along with a decrease in the amount of natural fiber in diet. What are the symptoms of appendicitis? Typical symptoms of appendicitis include abdominal pain that starts in the middle of the abdomen around the umbilicus (belly button) and then shifts to the right lower side of the abdomen. Other symptoms include
  • Nausea Vomiting Pain when touched on the right side of the abdomen.

It is most common in people ages 10 to 30. The cause of appendicitis is usually unknown. It may occur after a viral infection in the digestive tract or when the opening connecting the large intestine and appendix is blocked. The inflammation can cause infection, a blood clot, or rupture of the appendix. Because of the risk of rupture, appendicitis is considered an emergency. Anyone with symptoms needs to see a doctor immediately. Symptoms include

Appendicitis Appendicitis can occur at any age but it most often affects people between the ages of 10 and 30 and is one of the most common reasons for emergency abdominal surgery in children. Males are slightly more affected than females. Signs and Symptoms The main symptom of appendicitis is pain that begins centered around the belly button, which later shifts to the right side of the abdomen. The pain usually increases over a period of about 6 - 10 hours, BUT this can vary and eventually the pain may be very severe. The location of your pain may also vary, depending on your age. Young children may have appendicitis pain in different places. In addition to pain, you may have one or more of the following symptoms: Pain that begins centered around the belly button, then localizes to the right side
Loss of appetite
Nausea and sometimes vomiting
A fever that starts after other symptoms appear Diagnosis The diagnosis of appendicitis is best made on the basis of a history of the symptoms and a physical exam. When pressure on the painful area is suddenly released, appendicitis pain will often feel worse! Blood tests may show an elevation in the white blood cell count.

NATURE CURE Appendicitis Appendicitis is the most common of all serious intestinal disorders. It refers to an inflammation of the vermiform appendix. It presents itself in acute and chronic forms and affects both the sexes equally. This disease now accounts for about half the acute abdominal emergencies occurring between the ages of 10 to 30 . It is more frequent in developed countries than underdeveloped countries.
The appendix is a small tube located at the end of the caecum, the first part of the large intestine. It is called vermiform appendix as it resembles a worm. It is usually eight to ten cm. long. Its structure is made of the same tough fibrous outer covering as protects the entire alimentary canal. There is a layer of muscular tissue under the outer covering and further a layer of lymphoid tissue. The function of the appendix, which is performed by this lymphoid tissue, is to neutralise the irritating waste material generated in the body or the organic poisons introduced through the skin or membranes. Symptoms
Appendicitis usually begins with a sudden pain in the centre of the abdomen, which gradually shifts to the lower right side. The pain may be preceded by general discomfort in the abdomen, indigestion, diarrhoea or constipation. The patient usually has a mild fever varying from 100

appendicitis By Michael Peetz, MD Images (click to view larger image) Appendicitis is an infection of a small section of the bowel called the appendix. What is going on in the body? The appendix is a pouch at the junction of the small and large intestines. It is the size of a small finger. The pouch is lined with a mucous membrane that produces a clear secretion. This organ has no known function. One theory, though, is that it plays a role in the immune system very early in life. Partly digested food and liquids traveling through the bowel pass in and out of the pouch. If this flow is blocked, bacteria trapped in the appendix may multiply. This is thought to cause appendicitis. What are the signs and symptoms of the infection? Appendicitis often starts with mild pain near the navel. The pain gradually moves to the right lower part of the abdomen. It worsens with time, and is more intense when the person moves. Other symptoms of appendicitis may include: diarrhea fever in the later stages of appendicitis loss of appetite If the infection continues, the appendix may rupture. When this occurs, there is often relief of the pain for a short while. This improvement is followed by more intense but similar pain.

Appendicitis
Definition: A sudden inflammation of the appendix. The appendix is a narrow, small, finger-shaped tube that branches off the large intestine.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Appendicitis is one of the most common causes of emergency abdominal surgery in children. Approximately 4 appendectomies per 1000 children under age 18 are done annually in the United States. It is more common in males than females and incidence peaks in the late teens and early twenties. Appendicitis is uncommon under age two, but it can occur. Appendicitis generally follows obstruction of the appendix by feces (fecalith), a foreign body, or rarely, a tumor
Symptoms of appendicitis in young children are seldom classic so diagnosis is commonly delayed and perforation more likely. Older children and adolescents usually have a more typical presentation.
Classic presentation of appendicitis begins with crampy or "colicky" pain around the navel (periumbilical). There is usually a marked loss or total absence of appetite (

appendicitis
Ordinarily, fecal debris sort of sloshes in and out of the appendix, and as long as the normal flushing mechanism works, there is not a problem. Over time, a chunk of crud can accumulate in this little tube, and if it stays there long enough, can calcify into a little stone, called a fecalith. This traps fecal material in the appendix, and it cannot be normally expelled. This is where the trouble starts. Germs in the trapped stool material start to multiply and invade the tissue of the appendix. There is inflammation, swelling, and death of the tissue of the wall of the appendix. Eventually, the inflammed and pus-filled appendix will leak germs into the abdominal cavity. The infection that ensues is generally fatal if untreated. Symptoms often start rather vaguely, with pain around the umbilicus (belly button) - where just about every kid points when he says his tummy hurts. As the disease progresses, though, the pain will classically move down into the lower right side, becoming more intense. The child may begin to limp from irritation to the large muscle that runs from the lower spine and raises the leg - the psoas muscle - because the inflammed appendix lies right on top of it in the abdominal cavity. Classically the pain progresses to nausea, and eventually to fever as the appendix ruptures and serious infection starts in the abdomen ( peritonitis Cure is straightforward - surgical removal and antibiotic treatment of any infection present in the abdominal cavity. The incision is small, and usually heals very rapidly in children. (Selected cases can even be done laparoscopically.) Detection is not always so straightforward, because early symptoms can be vague and somewhat misleading.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Appendicitis (uh-pen-dih-SIGH-tis) is an inflammation of the appendix that affects about 1 in 500 people each year. It is most common in young adults 15 to 25 years old.
Causes
If the appendix is blocked, an infection occurs. An infected appendix becomes swollen, reddened, and filled with pus.
Signs/Symptoms
Abdominal pain (usually in the right lower side of the belly), fever, nausea, and vomiting.
Care
It may be hard for the doctor to decide whether you have appendicitis. You will probably need some blood tests, plus an examination called abdominal ultrasound. You may have surgery to remove your appendix right away, or the operation may occur later. If your signs and symptoms get worse, you will need to see your doctor immediately.
Risks
You can die from untreated appendicitis. But the risks of serious illness or death are small if you follow your doctor's advice.

Illnesses/Diseases Appendicitis Definition The appendix, an extension of the cecum (the beginning of the large intestine) in the lower right side of the abdomen, has no identifiable function, although its construction of lymphoid tissue suggests that it may be involved in immunity. Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes inflamed. Acute appendicitis is the most common abdominal emergency situation requiring surgery, occurring in 7 to 12 percent of the population. Although peak incidence is in the second and third decades, it may occur at any age. Cause The cause of appendicitis, like the function of the appendix itself, is unknown. Because the incidence of appendicitis rose in Western countries in the early part of this century, then declined in the 1930s, it may be related to the amount of fiber in the diet or hygiene. Appendicitis is believed to be caused by an obstruction in the appendix (most often by hardened stool), with subsequent bacterial infection. Diagnosis Appendicitis generally affects children, teenagers, and young adults. The initial symptom is often pain beginning in the upper-middle abdomen that after several hours subsides and then moves to the lower right part of the abdomen. Eventually, the pain becomes a progressively severe ache made worse by movement. Other symptoms may include nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, and fever. Appendicitis may mimic various other conditions, including gastroenteritis, diverticulitis, regional ileitis (Crohn's disease), or gynecologic pathology (e.g., ruptured ovarian cyst [mittelschmerz], infection of a fallopian tube, ruptured ectopic pregnancy). Often a blood test will show elevated white blood count and sedimentation rate, but these are relatively nonspecific findings.

Definition
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, which is the worm-shaped pouch attached to the cecum, the beginning of the large intestine. The appendix has no known function in the body, but it can become diseased. Appendicitis is a medical emergency, and if it is left untreated the appendix may rupture and cause a potentially fatal infection.
Description
Appendicitis is the most common abdominal emergency found in children and young adults. One person in 15 develops appendicitis in his or her lifetime. The incidence is highest among males aged 10-14, and among females aged 15-19. More males than females develop appendicitis between puberty and age 25. It is rare in the elderly and in children under the age of two. The hallmark symptom of appendicitis is increasingly severe abdominal pain . Since many different conditions can cause abdominal pain, an accurate diagnosis of appendicitis can be difficult. A timely diagnosis is important, however, because a delay can result in perforation, or rupture, of the appendix. When this happens, the infected contents of the appendix spill into the abdomen, potentially causing a serious infection of the abdomen called peritonitis Other conditions can have similar symptoms, especially in women.
