What is arthrogryposis?
Arthrogryposis (Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita) is a term describing the presence of a muscle disorder that causes multiple joint contractures at birth. A contracture is a limitation in the range of motion of a joint. In some cases, few joints may be affected and the range of motion may be nearly normal. In the "classic" case of arthrogryposis, hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, feet and knees are affected. In the most severe cases, nearly every body joint may be involved, including the jaw and back. Frequently, the contractures are accompanied by muscle weakness, which further limits movement. Arthrogryposis is relatively rare, occurring in approximately one in 3,000 births.

Believe in yourself- in the power you have to control your own life, day by day, Believe in the strength that you have deep inside, and your faith will help show you the way. Believe in tomorrow and what it will bring- Let a hopeful heart carry you through, For things will work out if you trust and believe there's no limit to what you can do. ~Emily Mathews

When I was born the doctors told my parents that I would never be able to walk or do things for myself. We proved them wrong! Sister had a lot to do with that, I think she was tired of carrying me! At age 5, most children are enrolled in kindergarten with no problems. My parents had to fight to get me enrolled in public school in a regular graduated in 1983. I did everything a "normal" child would do growing up like girl scouts, camping trips, attending basketball games in high school (I live in Indiana, high school basketball is a BIG thing here!) . The contractures limit the range of movement of the joints. The joints themselves may be fixed in a flexed or extended position. The number of joints affected can range from two or three to almost total involvement, including spine and jaw, resulting in a wide range of disability. AMC is a non-progressive condition with a normal life-span. However, joint contractures are sometimes linked to rare syndromes with limited life expectancy. Although AMC is associated with fetal immobility, the exact causes are not known. Early and specific diagnosis for each case is essential so that appropriate therapy can begin as soon as possible. Such treatment includes physiotherapy (including passive stretching) splinting and surgery. Inheritance patterns
These are variable. In Amyoplasia, the most common form of AMC, there is no significant inheritance risk. Distal arthrogryposis, which primarily affects the hands and feet, is autosomal dominant. However, as there are over one hundred types of AMC, precise diagnosis of individual cases is necessary to establish the risk of possible recurrence.

Thankfully I have been lucky enough to find others through this little screen who have "AMC" (Athrogryposis Mulitplex Congenita), or loved ones who do, and I have created this page so that I can share Geno's Story with all of you. I hope it helps you in some way.
Just browse through the site by clicking the links below. Thanks for visiting. I hope you enjoy your stay. :) This page is currently under construction. I hope to have it completed by the end of July.. Please come again soon. Thanks! :) Hi! My name is Geno.

My name is Denise. I was born on November 15th 1972. I was diagnosed with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. The actual cause of the condition is unknown in my situation.
At birth my feet were clubbed, my hands were in an abnormal position and I had a cleft pallate, acutally three of them. I have had numerous surgeries and only some of them were successful.  Years of physical and speech therapy proved to be the most helpful intervention for me. Therapy only worked for me because it began at a very early age, I was still an infant.
I can speak with out any type of defect and I am mobile. I discontinued physical therapy as a pre-teen. I have since suffered for that decision. I have lost fleibility and range of motion. I have recently tried to stretch my joints but I am very forgetful and need to motivate or pay the price even further.
I am currently attending a California University and I have a dream to counsel disabled kids. Being a kid isn't easy and being disabled sure doesn't help. I feel that my disability would allow the kids to open up to me and to think that maybe I do know where they are comming from. I can only hope I am right. Little Me Links: Yahoo!

Our Daughter's Arthrogryposis
By Barb Burke Our family has come in contact with so many beautiful children and families struggling with Arthrogryposis. They have been such an inspiration and encouragement to our family! My husband and I did some ground work prior to accepting the referral of our daughter from the adoption agency. We attended a full-day seminar on Arthrogryposis at our local Children's Hospital headed by Dr. Judith Hall, the leading expert on the subject. She has researched this condition for the past 20 years and revealed cutting-edge information on the subject. I also contacted a few parents who were raising children with arthrogryposis and found them most helpful. Initial Contact We first heard of our daughter residing in a babies home in Seoul, Korea when she was 4 months old. At that time, she had been diagnosed as being born with a type of Arthrogryposis known as Amyoplasia, affecting only her upper limbs. Within 10 days of life, her biological parents placed her in the care of an agency for adoption because they were given little hope for her future, and felt unable to afford the needed care. We first met Soo (Excellent) Hee (Brilliant) through a picture at age four months. She was born with shoulders internally rotated, elbows fixed in extension, and flexion contracture of her wrists. She received range of motion by a therapist visiting her 3x's weekly in the orphanage. The US doctors believe this saved her small muscles from atrophying.

Jess Daniel Introduction Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) is a musculoskeletal disorder characterized by the presence of multiple joint contractures (limitation of the range of motion of a joint) at birth. In some cases, only a few joints may be affected, however, in the classic cases of AMC, hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, feet, and knees are affected. In the more severe cases, joints in the back and jaw can be affected as well. In addition to having joint contractures, children also experience muscle weakness, which further limits movement. There may be as many as 10 to 20 different arthrogrypotic disorders, all with similar joint manifestations. However, the most common form of AMC is amyoplasia. There are many different causes of AMC, but typically it is a result of either problems with joint growth and development, decreased fetal movement (not enough room in the uterus to move), or problems with spinal development in the first 3 months of pregnancy. AMC occurs in 1 out of every 3,000 live births. In most cases, AMC is not inherited and does not occur more than once in a family. However, in about 30% of the cases, a genetic cause has been identified.

About Me
Hi! I'm Jackie. I live in Music City. I'm going on 67. Born with arthrogryposis multiplix congeniti that significantly affects my four extemities, I've been experiencing severe nerve and muscle pains in my legs, possably caused by sitting in my wheelchair all these years. I work full-time as Program Coordinator for the Disability Information Office for local government for over 21 years. I have three degrees from Peabody College/Vanderbilt University
My Online Life
In addition to seeking information about the aging process and my disability, I want to be kept abreast of disability rights issues, with special emphasis on home-based long term care and attendant care. I also want to be kept updated on how churches will begin to create greater inclusion of persons with disabilities and their families in ongoing programs and services.
My Interests
I enjoy decorating and cooking TV programs and reading materials, all types of music (I sing in my church's chior) and attending concerts and plays. A somewhat new interest is dabbling in writing my story as someone with quadriplegia who has had some measure of success, been involved with the Independent Living movement, and working for many years encouraging greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in religious experiences.
