ME! I have a special kind of smile,
A special kind of talk.
I hold my head a special way,
And I've a special walk.
My laughing always sounds like me,
No one sings like I sing.
I have a special kind of way
of doing everything.
For I'm a special person.
There's no one quite like me.
And if I had a choice, I guess I'de just choose being me!

More Extensive Page on Josepha's disability-Arthrogryposis Great Resource Page to new parents with AMC-many photos Our family has come in contact with so many beautiful children and families struggling with Arthrogryposis. They have been such an inspiration and encouragement to our family! My husband and I did some ground work prior to accepting the referral of our daughter from the adoption agency. We consulted with our Genetic Specialist, who knew little about this condition but was more than willing to research it. My husband and I attended a full-day seminar on Arthrogryposis at our local Children's Hospital. This was headed by Dr. Judith Hall, the leading expert on the subject. She has researched this condition for the past 20 years and revealed cutting-edge information on the subject. I also contacted a few parents who were raising children with arthrogryposis and found them most helpful. Initial Contact We first heard of our daughter residing in a babies home in Seoul, Korea when she was 4 months old. At that time, she had been diagnosed as being born with a type of Arthrogryposis known as Amyoplasia, affecting only her upper limbs. Within 10 days of life, her biological parents placed her in the care of an agency for adoption because they were given little hope for her future, and felt unable to afford the needed care. We first met Soo(Excellent) Hee (Brilliant) through a picture at age four months. She was born with shoulders internally rotated, elbows fixed in extension, and flexion contracture of her wrists. She received range of motion by a therapist visiting her 3x's weekly in the orphanage. The US doctors believe this saved her small muscles from atrophying.

AMC has effected both of my shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and feet. I was born with one straight leg and one bent leg (which I broke in the womb), and both feet are clubbed. I've had several corrective surgeries on both legs from the age of 1 to 12 years old. And thankfully have had no surgery on my arms. I walk around the house and use an motorised wheelchair outside. They gave me my first motorised wheelchair at the age of 4, but like alot of people with disabilties, they had me trying all sorts of contraptions to get me mobile, I tried trolleys 3 inches off the ground (boye did spiders look big ...), my first trolley was made by my Father. Then I tried walkers that always seemed to wheel too fast, they almost had me running before I could walk... :o)

  • Definition Epidemiology Pathophysiology Etiology ... Reference Page
  • Definition
AMC is a nonprogressive congenital neuromuscular syndrome characterized by severe joint contractures, muscle weakness, and fibrosis.
    Epidemiology
AMC occurs in 1 out of every 3000 live births. Amyoplasia, characterized by fatty and fibrous tissue replacement of the limb muscles, is the most common form (43%).
    Pathophysiology
The principle cause of AMC is believed to be decreased fetal movements (akinesia) caused by maternal or fetal abnormalities. It is associated with neurogenic and myopathic disorders. It is believed that the neuropathic form of AMC involves a deterioration in the anterior horn cell leading to muscle weakness and fibrosis.
    Etiology
Several factors are implicated in AMC including hyperthermia of the fetus, prenatal virus, fetal vascular compromise, septum of the uterus, decreased amniotic fluid, muscle and/or connective tissue developmental abnormalities.
    Clinical Manifestations
The primary joints involved (in order of decreasing prevalence) include the foot, hip, wrist, knee, elbow, and shoulder. AMC is typically symmetrical and

The Center for Athrogryposis Treatment Imagine children unable to groom or dress themselves because their elbows are completely straight and cannot bend. Or children unable to walk with any efficiency because their hips and knees are not only deformed, but also are incapable of motion. This is the plight of children with arthrogryposis. Arthrogryposis, from the Greek terminology meaning hooked or curved joints, describes not a single diagnosis but a spectrum of congenital deformities. What each condition shares are the multiple joint contractures , poorly developed and contracted muscles, and limb deformities. There is a wide spectrum of involvement and severity, from children having only a deformed hand or foot, to those with both arms and legs completely affected. At the Center for Arthrogryposis Treatment, director Harold J.P. van Bosse, M.D. coordinates a team approach to these complex children. The children are carefully evaluated and followed by both the orthopaedic and pediatric staff. At their first visit, they are also referred to a geneticist and a neurologist to help establish which underlying condition, if any, may be present. Other specialists' opinions are sought as needed, depending on the diagnosis. These include cardiologists

Andrea's World Hi! My name is Andrea Dawn Gerloff. I was born on November 19, 1983. I am a seventeen year old female and I am going to tell you my life story with Arthogryposis. When I was born I stay in the hospital for one week. First time I went to the hospital I was 13 days old, the first time I got a cast was when I was 5 months old. I had my first surgery when I was 13 months old and I came home on Christmas Eve. My first broken arm was when I was 5 years old. I have had at least 12 surgery.
The hardest thing of me having AMC has been the way people treat me. They treat me like I am going to give them a disease (Artho-Annie or something).
Throughout my high school years, it has gottin easier for me to except the way they treat me because they are the one who has the problem, not me. This is my last year of High school, and my class is treating me diffrent. I think they are seeing i'm not as bad as they thought. Well that's my story.. Prom of '01 My Favorite Links: Yahoo! Yahoo! I hate having my mom feed me now I really do like "doing it all by myself! This is my way cool Nascar room. My mom just got done doing for me! FACTS ABOUT ME! When I was born it was noted that I had a condition called Arthrogryposis (AMC.). It is said to be rare only happending 1 in 3000 births. Even so my mom and I have met alot of people with AMC. As many of you may know from my other pages I have come a long way since the day I was born. I am now five years old and walk by myself with very little help, sometimes I do get a little off balance but my mom is always there to catch me. I attend a regular preschool and can keep up with the other kids just fine. When I was just 3 months old my mom started taking me to an early intervention program where I stayed until I was 2 1/2 years old. At that time my mom enrolled me in a private monsori preschool that attended for two years there I learned alot. The first year went really well due to the funding I had in place for a one on one aide. As for the second year it wasn't as well as the first.

Today is Nov.7,2002, we went to the Dupont Hospital today and they made hand splints for Bryce. I think these splints will give him more range of motion and allow us to work with his hands more. He tolerates them very well, he didn't seem to mind them at all.

Hi! Emily is doing well, and progressing a lot! She is now 7 mo. old. Ever since Superbowl Sunday, she has been drinking her whole bottle without choking! Hopefully she will get that G-tube out soon! She has grown so much and is now 15lbs! Right now she is in no casts or harness, but they are in the process of making splints for her to wear that will keep her knees bent. She'll wear them for about an hour a day or maybe at night! She is cooing a lot now too - we we're worried about that because she wasn't making any baby noises, but she showed us, she won't be quite now! Hope everyone is doing well! Keep Praying! Holly ...
