How i got diagnosed with aspergers syndrome
In early 1999 mum and dad noticed I had very odd behaviour i wouldnt hold their hands, throw tantrums every 2 weeks, demand them to let me change schools, would sit in my bedroom everyday listenening to the same cd over and over again, never gave them hugs or kisses, cry about schol because I was getting bullied and was very upset I did not have a nice class at all they were a nasty bunch of teenagers and did not have hardly any friends I had in the end up to 3 or 4 friends when in the first place had heaps more than that I also bocked peoples way in the supermarket and stare. Then in may 1999 I got assessed at puketerio centre by someone as you would probably guess i spoke very little through out the interview and mum did the rest of the talking and mum described my behaviour to her and she said i fit the Aspergers Syndrome category. Whe we were at puketero centre on the same day Diana Kane gave mum some information on Aspergers syndrome and mum and dad reaad all of it and said its just like reading a book about Janine it had just described just about everything of me on that piece of paper!!!!!!! Aspergers Syndrome and Reading the Minds of Others (transcript now available)
Sunday 3 March 2002
repeated the following Wednesday at 2.30pm

with Natasha Mitchell We all commit faux pas from time to time, or put our foot well and truly in our mouths. But what if this is something you do all the time, and you just can't stop yourself? This week - the importance of being able to read the minds of others, and why people with Aspergers' Syndrome - a mild form of autism - and those with selective brain damage find themselves doing the oddest things because they can't always do this properly. Transcript:
Natasha Mitchell: Hello, Natasha Mitchell here once again with All in the Mind, thanks for tuning in. We got a great response to last week’s look at the modern practice of philosophy. And if you want to know about philosophy café events, where they are or how you might set one up yourself, those details are now up on our website. Today though, we get to the heart of what it means to be a social creature, the importance of being able to read the minds of others, and what happens when you just simply can’t. Wendy Lawson: I actually thought all the other people were different, and I was waiting for them to realise that. It took me quite a while to appreciate that they were the more usual people and in fact it was me who was the most different.

ASPERGER'S SYNDROME Description
Asperger's Syndrome is a Pervasive Developmental Disorder usually identified in childhood and is characterized by significant impairment in social interactions and adherence to rigid routines and interests in their daily activities. The impairment in social interactions may consist of an inability to interpret and express nonverbal cues, difficulty in developing and maintaining friendships, and an inability to engage in appropriate social exchanges. The adherence to rigid routines and interests may involve an inability to be flexible, a need to engage in compulsive routines, a tendency to engage in repetitive movements, and/or an intense preoccupation with a specific area of interest. Associated features of Asperger's Syndrome which are not required for diagnosis but are commonly present include delay in motor development often seen as clumsiness, extreme sensitivities to sensations (tactile, visual, and auditory), and excessive, but non-interactive, speech when related to areas of interest. In addition, many children with Asperger's will have behavior problems due to their difficulty in understanding the world around them. Children with Asperger's Syndrome are of at least average intellectual development and develop language, curiosity and self-help skills within normal age limits. Frequently, Asperger's Syndrome occurs with other childhood disorders such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

What is Asperger Syndrome
Prevalence
Current estimates suggest that 1 in 150 of the population may have AS. That's an estimate 150,000 to 200,000 Canadians.
The latest studies (2001) from the National Autistic Society in the UK suggests individuals with ASD with an IQ over 70 (a hallmark of AS) make up 71 per 10,000 or .7% of the population. Time Magazine notes in its May 6, 2002 issue cover story, ASD is five times as common as Down syndrome and three times as common as juvenile diabetes Why Haven't I Heard of Asperger Syndrome
Although first identified by Dr. Hans Asperger in Austria in 1944, the work of Asperger was only translated into English in 1991 and did not make its way into the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic Statistical Manual until 1994. For decades, individuals with AS went un - or misdiagnosed with any number of related or entirely unrelated disorders. With the recent recognition there has been an astronomical increase in the number of identified individuals with AS in North America. This manifold increase does not seem to lie strictly in better diagnostics. Debate about the causes of autism and AS and their dramatic increase worldwide all point to the desperate need for more and wider research.

Aspergers Syndrome. Dublin, Ireland
Families with children who have A.S. have very little support in the school system. Because they are different the children are nearly always bullied. They have not the patient for what they see as useless small talk or games, so antaganise other children. But this also causes problems in the classroom. A.S. children hear speach literally so when the teacher tells 'the class' to go to page six in their reading book, the A.S. child hears this as the teacher wants the class to read that page, what does she want me to do. I am not the class, I am me. If the teacher does not understand this he/she believes the child is being delibertly disruptive. More education is needed in all schools so these children are not labelled. This Web Site is part of a course I am doing and will only be up for two weeks. I have provided links to more permenant sites. Eventually once I've learn't how, I will make a proper more permanant site for Dublin Ireland

Home Thimerosal Vaccines Contact Us Asperger disorder is a form of pervasive developmental disorder characterized by severe persistent impairment in social interactions, repetitive behavior patterns, and restricted interests. Children with this disorder often exhibit a limited capacity for empathy, a failure to develop friendships, and a limited number of intense and highly focused interests. While people with Asperger disorder may have certain communication problems, including poor nonverbal communication and pedantic speech. Physical symptoms may include early childhood motor delays, clumsiness, fine motor difficulty, gait anomalies, and odd movements. Recently evidence has surfaced linking Asperger's Disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders associated with Autism to mercury poisoning in infants as a result of childhood vaccines containing thimerosal. Thimerosal is preservative that pharmaceutical companies added to vaccines in order to mass package them, which is far less expensive then individually packaging each vaccine dose. Unfortunately this attempt to save money appears to have endangered thousands children in the United States. Advice on Children's Behaviour Asperger’s Syndrome: A Developmental Puzzle
By Michael McCroskery
Cognitive and social skills, which shape personality and character, develop throughout life. However, genetic or environmental obstacles can obstruct development, especially early in life. One such obstacle is Asperger’s Syndrome. Asperger’s Syndrome (or AS) is a congenital neurobiological condition that affects 0.25% of the population. AS is linked to autism spectrum disorder, and includes autistic-like behaviour and marked deficiencies in social and communication skills. AS individuals are of average to above average intelligence, some with unusual gifts and creativity. As a diagnosis, it has been known in Europe since the 1940’s, but has only been included in our medical diagnostic manuals since 1994. Thus many adults and children remain undiagnosed. Consequently AS is relatively unknown and not clearly understood, even among professionals. AS is indeed a puzzle, and researchers are working to identify the pieces and form them into a meaningful picture. My experiences as an adult recently diagnosed with Asperger’s, together with my studies in child development, suggest that individuals with AS are like young children—stuck in time, so to speak, never able to advance beyond early stages in social, cognitive and language development. For example, most AS difficulties centre around social competencies. A salient characteristic of young children is egocentrism—the inability to recognize that other people think and feel differently than oneself. Persons with Asperger’s Syndrome remain in this egocentric state, unable to interpret the thoughts and emotions of others, or to experience empathy. Another name given to this condition is "mind blindness"—the incapacity to visualize the mind states of others. Thus it is hard for AS individuals to develop normal friendships, as either children or adults. Without empathy, they become emotionally stunted. A related problem is the inability to carry out social referencing through understanding nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions or body language. Such cues are "invisible" to those with AS.

Did General Charles Gordon Have Aspergers Syndrome?
Paul Mersh, 11 Gravesend Road, Strood, Rochester, Kent ME2 3PH [paulmersh@btinternet.com]
Introduction
This essay has been written in order to stimulate discussion about what has been described as General Charles Gordon's homosexual traits. The discussion begins by outlining the evidence often cited as proof that Gordon was a latent homosexual, then examines John Pollock's refutation of these allegations, and finally offers an alternative explanation for Gordon's behaviour.
Evidence for Gordon's alleged homosexuality
It has to be stated at the outset that there are no confessions written by supposed lovers. There was no court trial, as in Oscar Wilde's case, or army record of him having been cashiered for what was then, a serious offence. Writers who have maintained that Gordon was a closet homosexual, such as Richardson, largely rely on his behavioural traits to provide their evidence. What is this evidence? Firstly he began his days by having a cold bath (a fact cited by many authors including Pollock). This is often explained as being necessary to "cool his passions." Secondly, there is his liking for small children, in particular boys. There is no doubt that Gordon enjoyed the company of young boys. From all accounts he seemed to have sought them out, spent time with them in his home and nursed them when they were sick. It has to be said that this suggests not only latent homosexuality but latent paedophillia. Thirdly, there is Gordon's aversion to women: he is on record as having refused invitations from women if he felt that he was being lined up to marry a young woman. Gordon remained a bachelor all of his life.

Asperger syndrome is a form of autism, a disability that affects the way a person communicates and relates to others. A number of the traits of autism are common to Asperger syndrome including: Difficulty in communicating
Difficulty in social relationships
A lack of imagination and creative play
However, people with Asperger syndrome usually have fewer problems with language than those with autism, often speaking fluently though their words can sometimes sound formal or stilted. People with Asperger syndrome often do not have the accompanying learning disabilities often associated with autism; in fact, people with Asperger syndrome are often of average or above average intelligence with many displaying a vivid imagination and great creativity with literacy and art.
Because of this, many children with Asperger syndrome enter mainstream school and with the right support and encouragement, can make good progress and go on to further education and employment.

http://www.paains.org.uk/disorders/aspergersfaq.htm
Home A-Z Links Forums Contact Us Aspergers Syndrome FAQ
Is Asperger syndrome the same thing as autism? The difference between these two things can seem very confusing. They are similar to each other because both people that are autistic and people that have Asperger syndrome have problems in three main areas (social communication, social understanding and imagination). Another similarity is that both people with autism and people with Asperger syndrome dislike change and have routines they like to follow (doing the same things in the same way, everyday). However, a person with Asperger syndrome is more able than an autistic person - this means you can do things for yourself that an autistic child might need help with. Another difference is that people with Aspergers have a normal (or perhaps even higher than normal) level of intelligence, whereas an autistic child may have problems learning things. At what age do you get Asperger syndrome?
