61. Aspergers Syndrome
Asperger's Syndrome. What Is Asperger's Syndrome? This life. How CommonIs Asperger's Syndrome? Asperger's is less common than autism.

Asperger's Syndrome
What Is Asperger's Syndrome?
This is very similar to autism , in that there are similar problems around getting on with other people, and behaviours are shown that seem obsessive or repetitive. However, where it is mainly different is that the childs' speech and intelligence develop normally. People with Asperger's syndrome may go on to develop a psychosis in their early adult life.
How Common Is Asperger's Syndrome?
Asperger's is less common than autism. Boys are 6 to 8 times more likely to develop childhood autism than girls.
What Causes Asperger's Syndrome?
Nobody is really 100% sure. Although some research seems to suggest that it is a brain problem (how it is wired), which is linked to genetic factors (i.e. you might inherit it from your parents even if they have never suffered from it). There are also other theories which suggest it is more to do with how the child has been brought up during its early days and months. Other theories suggest that both factors play a role, but the bottom line is that despite quite a lot of effort being put into finding out what is going on, we still don't really know.
Can It Be Treated?

There are ten different types of personality disorders that exist, which all have various emphases.

Home Mission Services Resident Guide ... Resources Pasadena Villa offers specialty services for adults who are diagnosed with a mental illness and have a secondary diagnosis, or suspected diagnosis, of Asperger's Syndrome (A.S.), which is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder, and is considered a Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Since Asperger's Syndrome is a relatively new diagnostic category, many individuals suffering from A.S. have been initially diagnosed as schizophrenic or schizoid personality disorder, due to the similarity of symptoms. In Asperger's Syndrome, affected individuals are characterized by social isolation and eccentric behavior. There are impairments in two-sided social interaction and non-verbal communication. Though grammatical, their speech is peculiar due to abnormalities of inflection and a repetitive pattern. Clumsiness is prominent both in their articulation and gross motor behavior. They usually have a circumscribed area of interest, which usually leaves no space for more age appropriate, common interests. Our specialty program uses a variety of interventions in a therapeutic community. Individual and group therapies are used to help the individual process the feelings aroused by being socially handicapped. Parent/family education and training, behavioral modification, social skills training and educational interventions are also utilized. New lines of communication are opened, which leads to a more integrated and better-adjusted family unit. The program provides mentorship, a community with peer and staff support and affection, focus on vocations and special interests, and opportunities for residents to come to terms with their strengths and deficits.

If there are any experts out there, I'd appreciate advice. I recently started working with 16-18 yr olds suffering from Asperger's Syndrome, and notice a tendency towards poor diet in this group. In particular, one young man I work closely with has a routine daily diet consisting of: 2 or 3 white bread + honey sandwiches 2 or 3 glasses semi-skimmed milk ocassional banana / yoghurt frequent chocolate bars and crisps (potato chips) 1 daily multi-vit+ 1 cod liver oil cap.

    Asperger's Syndrome
I welcome today’s motion on asperger’s syndrome, calling on a comprehensive review of the services provided for sufferers and their carers. Autism is on the increase in Northern Ireland, and asperger’s syndrome is no different. Undoubtedly, asperger’s syndrome is only recently being diagnosed as distinct condition in its own right. We have come a long way in recognising this type of autism, yet there is still a long way to go. Asperger’s syndrome is a difficult condition to diagnose, and carriers have gone into adulthood not knowing that there is a medical explanation for the confusion and frustration that they have felt. I support the findings of the Department of Education’s task group report on autism, that within the last few years educational, health and social services provision for children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders has entered a period of rapid improvement. However, the report does state that there is still much progress to be made to identify and meet the needs of sufferers. Those who do have asperger’s syndrome, are not confined to a life without meaning or quality. Many do use what would have been seen as a hindrance, to good use in employment and in other areas of life.

You are reading the web site of Tony Attwood, the UK educationalist who has written nearly 100 books on Dyslexia Dyscalculia School Improvement Attention Deficit Disorder and who has also written books on business and marketing, and a series of novels. If you are wondering why aspergers syndrome and autism are not on this list, the answer is that this Tony Attwood hasn't written on these subjects. There is however another Tony Attwood - same name and same spelling - and he has written on this topic. In the past we have tried to forward mail for the other Tony Attwood to him, but this doesn't seem to have worked, and we've not had any reply to our emails, so we aren't doing this any more. Also we have received a few emails casting doubt on the validity of the work of the other Tony Attwood, and arguing very forcefully that his approach is both invalid and harmful. In addition we do receive some emails from people commenting that they have not been able to make contact using phone numbers they have found. Naturally we cannot comment on any of this - this site is totally about the Tony Attwood who is a UK citizen, author of the books listed here and a holder of degrees from London University and the Open University. We cannot in any way validate, or indeed criticise the work of the other Tony Attwood. Our only suggestion is that you try and contact the other Tony Attwood direct. It has been suggested he has a web site at

Tourettes Syndrome (TS) high proportion of TS people are ADHD in varying degrees , especially if there is a family history of a sibling or parent who has been diagnosed. TS is often a co-morbid condition with ADHD. So, if you have an ADHD child in the classroom that cannot control his/her sounds or actions such as facial expressions, do not discount TS. Aspergers Syndrome (AS) is another grossly under-diagnosed "difference". AS people have been described as "high functioning autistics" and can be very similar in traits to ADHD people. There is one difference that can be counted on between the ADHD and Aspergers, and that is Aspies do not tolerate change that well. ADDers love the constant environment change if highly stimulating (if it is boring .... watch out!), but Aspies need to know well in advance. Often they are highly intelligent, brilliant in fact, but do need accommodations in the classroom. Many teachers, because they cannot see the disability, the neurological dysfunction, and only see the brilliance, automatically think that that the child HAS to understand because of their intelligence level.

    What is Asperger's Syndrome?
Asperger's Syndrome was officially recognised by the World Health Organisation in 1991. Although precise diagnosis is difficult, most clinicians broadly define AS as 'autism without any additional learning disability'. AS is also referred to as HFA or Higher-Functioning Autism. At present, there is no cure for AS. There is no established link between AS and violence. In fact, AS sufferers are far more likely to be strictly law-abiding than the average person. How many people have AS? Estimates vary from 200,000 in the UK and findings suggest that many sufferers are never diagnosed. About 75% of AS sufferers are men. Who was Asperger?
Hans Asperger, a Viennese physician, published a paper 1944 describing the pattern of behaviours now known as Asperger's Syndrome Asperger's or autism?

The syndrome is considered part of the spectrum of pervasive developmental delay and is sometimes referred to as "high-functioning autism." Related Articles Attention Deficit Disorder School Problems Autism Guide Speech Delays Internet Links About Pediatrics ADHD Mental Health Information for Children Like children with autism and other pervasive development delay disorders, children with Asperger syndrome have difficulty with social interactions . They have the most difficulty with interpreting nonverbal cues from other people such as facial expressions and body language. Direct eye contact may be difficult. As a result, they have a hard time forming friendships with their peers. In addition, they do not seek to share interests or experiences with other people. For example, if they like toy trains, they do not bring the toy over to someone to show it off.
