As a mother who has two children with Aspergers this is my plea to society in general. Next time you see a person that is different then you please don't walk away and make rude comments as we can see and hear your comments. More then this my children can feel it and have to live with the way it makes them feel long after you have made the harmful comments. I have grown up unscathed by Aspergers and know how to cope with prejudice but my children are not afforded that. If you don't understand please ask I will be more then happy to help educate you about it. Please understand that there is not one universal mold for a person and we are each as unique and beautiful as individual snowflakes in a blizzard. Who can argue with the unique beauty of a snowflake? I can't can you Aspergers Syndrome What is Aspergers Syndrome? Asperger Syndrome is a neurobiological disorder named for Doctor Hans Asperger, who in 1944 published a paper which described a pattern of behaviors in several young boys who had normal intelligence and language development, but who also exhibited autistic-like behaviors and marked deficiencies in social and communication skills. What is it like with Aspergers Syndrome?

C failed his hearing test when he was a baby. After years of visits to hearing specialists and nothing being done, we were eventually informed that there was nothing wrong with C's hearing; he just chose not to hear. This was because he was in his own little world. He was diagnosed at around the age of 9 with Asperger's Syndrome, a 'generally' mild form of autism usually associated with an above average IQ. We had lived for all that time believing something was wrong with his hearing, but that was all. We put the trouble he was in at school down to his being unable to hear things. It was only after an Educational Psychologist (there are some good ones) made the diagnosis that all the little traits which we had accepted as being C, also made up a Syndrome!

What is Asperger's Syndrome?
Asperger's Syndrome , also known as Asperger's Disorder or Autistic Psychopathy, is a Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) characterized by severe and sustained impairment in social interaction, development of restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities. These characteristics result in clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. In contrast to Autistic disorder (Autism) , there are no clinically significant delays in language or cognition or self help skills or in adaptive behavior, other than social interaction. Prevalence is limited but it appears to be more common in males. Onset is later than what is seen in Autism, or at least recognized later. A large number of children are diagnosed between the ages of 5 and 9. Motor delays, clumsiness, social interaction problems, and idiosyncratic behaviors are reported. Adults with Asperger's have trouble with empathy and modulation of social interaction - the disorder follows a continuous course and is usually lifelong.
