Atherosclerosis
A form of arteriosclerosis characterized by patchy subintimal thickening (atheromas) of medium and large arteries, which can reduce or obstruct blood flow. The prevalence of clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis in general increases in postmenopausal women and begins to approach that in age-matched men.
Pathology and Pathogenesis
Atherosclerotic plaque consists of accumulated intracellular and extracellular lipids, smooth muscle cells, connective tissue, and glycosaminoglycans. The earliest detectable lesion of atherosclerosis is the fatty streak (consisting of lipid-laden foam cells, which are macrophages that have migrated as monocytes from the circulation into the subendothelial layer of the intima), which later evolves into the fibrous plaque (consisting of intimal smooth muscle cells surrounded by connective tissue and intracellular and extracellular lipids). Atherosclerotic vessels have reduced systolic expansion and abnormally rapid wave propagation. Arteriosclerotic arteries of hypertensive persons also have reduced elasticity, which is further reduced when atherosclerosis develops.

Arteriosclerosis obliterans of limbs is a chronic obstructive disease caused by atheroscleorsis of limbs. The disease mostly happens to male patients in their 50-70s. It often involves the large or medium arteries of the lower limbs, such as iliac, femoral and posterior tibial arteries, etc. Those who suffer form diabetes are prone to be affected by this kind of disease, in which case the patient's condition may be serious and often complicated with ulcer and gangerne. This disease also falls into the category of "tuo ju" (gangrene of finger or toe )in TCM. Main Points of Diagnosis 1. The patients with this kind of disease are mostly over 45 years old and often suffer form hypertension. 2. The affected limb has coldness, numbness, formication twinge and intermittent claudication.

"Athero"-sclerosis is a disease in which fatty material is deposited on the wall of your arteries, which narrows the arteries and eventually restricts blood flow. It is one of several types of "Arterio"-sclerosis, a disease characterized by thickening and hardening of artery walls. However, the word "atherosclerosis" is often used to indicate any of the forms of arteriosclerosis. Causes and Risks Atherosclerosis is a common disorder of the arteries. Fat cholesterol , and other substances accumulate in the walls of arteries and form "atheromas" or plaques. Eventually, the fatty tissue can erode the wall of the artery, diminish the elasticity (stretchiness) of the artery, and interfere with the blood flow. Clots may form around the plaque deposits, further interfering with blood flow. When blood flow in the arteries to heart muscle becomes severely restricted, it leads to symptoms like chest pain
Risk factors include smoking diabetes obesity high blood cholesterol , a diet high in fats , and having a personal or family history of heart disease Cerebrovascular disease peripheral vascular disease high blood pressure , and kidney disease involving dialysis are also disorders that may also be associated with atherosclerosis.

ATHEROSCLEROSIS
What Is Atherosclerosis? Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries , the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body.  It is characterized by an accumulation of fatty deposits , or plaques , along the vessel walls. These plaques can harden , rendering the vessel walls brittle, and narrow the vessel diameter, thus limiting blood flow .  The plaque surface can stimulate blood clots to form; these clots either block blood flow at the site of the plaque, or flow through the body and become lodged in a smaller vessel.  Large plaques are unstable and are prone to rupture ; if this occurs, pieces of the fatty deposit are released into the blood and similarly may occlude vessels down stream.  The consequences of atherosclerosis are many and severe, depending on which arteries are affected, and whether or not clots or rupture occur. Most significantly, atherosclerosis is

Atherosclerosis Description: Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, is a build-up of fatty areas, cholesterol, and calcium along blood vessel walls. Cause: Often caused by high cholesterol and elevated triglyceride levels. Useful Supplements: Chondroitin sulfate Evening Primrose Oil Folic Acid Octacosanol ... Vitamin E Useful Herbs: Bilberry Fenugreek Fo-ti Garlic ... Licorice Root, Psyllium , Rosemary, Turmeric Further information: Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, is a common disorder in which fat, cholesterol, and other deposits appear on the walls of arteries. As these deposits grow, they can diminish the elasticity of the arteries and interfere with blood flow. In addition, blood clots can form. These problems manifest as chest pains, often resulting in a heart attack as well. There are many things which lead to a higher likelihood of atherosclerosis: smoking, diabetes obesity high cholesterol , and a family history of heart problems. A low fat, low cholesterol diet appears to help prevent hardening of the arteries. Regular exercise is also helpful. Even if atherosclerosis has already been detected, healthy lifestyle changes can prevent it from causing further damage to the body.

Atherosclerosis (ath-er-oh-skler-OH-sis) is a form of coronary artery disease. Fatty deposits, called plaques, build up in the lining of the arteries. The plaques are raised patches of cholesterol , lipids, and cellular debris that narrow and damage the walls of the arteries. When a coronary artery, which supplies blood to the heart, becomes narrowed or blocked, the heart is deprived of blood, and this can cause a heart attack Though the damaging effects of atherosclerosis may not be realized until later in life, the process actually begins in childhood. According to some medical researchers, certain individuals are more susceptible to atherosclerosis because of a genetic tendency. How can I prevent atherosclerosis?
    Prevention techniques include:

    What is atherosclerosis?
Atherosclerosis is a type of arteriosclerosis caused by a build-up of plaque in the inner lining of an artery. (Arteriosclerosis is a general term for thickening or hardening of the arteries.) Plaque is made up of deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin, and can develop in medium or large arteries. The artery wall becomes thickened and looses its elasticity. Atherosclerosis is a slow, progressive disease that may start as early as childhood. However, the disease has the potential to progress rapidly. What causes atherosclerosis?
It is unknown exactly how atherosclerosis begins or what causes it. Some scientists think that certain risk factors may be associated with atherosclerosis, including:
    • elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels
    • high blood pressure
    • smoking
    • diabetes mellitus (type 1 diabetes)
    • obesity
    • physical inactivity
    How does the disease progress?
