Wash and thoroughly dry the affected area twice each day. Use a cool compress to stop the inflammation, ease the pain and lessen itching. Soak your feet in a saltwater bath (two teaspoons of salt to one pint of water) five to 10 minutes, twice a day. Apply a paste of baking soda and water in between your toes and to the soles of your feet. After 10 minutes, rinse and dry your feet thoroughly. Next, dust your feet with cornstarch or talcum powder. Medicate your feet with an over-the-counter antifungal medication two or three times a day. Continue to apply the medication up to two weeks after the infection has disappeared. WARNING: Diabetics should not self treat any conditions of the feet, it is important to bring any problems you have with your feet to the attention of your doctor or chiropodist.
Athletes Foot is not, as its name suggest, a condition which solely affects the physically energetic. It is an uncomfortable condition of the feet caused by a fungal infection just below the skin. It can be recognised by an initial scaling of the skin between the toes, this skin then becomes moist or soggy . The skin may then flake and peel and small blisters may appear. The new skin underneath infected areas may look red, sore and inflamed. There are several products available to treat Athletes Foot. It is important to follow the guidelines for the treatment carefully since the infecting fungus is quite hardy and is often very difficult to kill. Following the course of treatment will ensure eradication of the fungus and reduce the chances of a further infection.

Athlete's Foot
Athlete's foot is a skin disease caused by a fungus, usually occurring between the toes. The fungus most commonly attacks the feet because shoes create a warm, dark, and humid environment which encourages fungus growth. Not all fungus conditions are athlete's foot. Other conditions, such as disturbances of the sweat mechanism, reaction to dyes or adhesives in shoes, eczema, and psoriasis, also may mimic athlete's foot. Symptoms The signs of athlete's foot, singly or combined, are drying skin, itching scaling, inflammation, and blisters. Blisters often lead to cracking of the skin. When blisters break, small raw areas of tissue are exposed, causing pain and swelling. Itching and burning may increase as the infection spreads. Athlete's foot may spread to the soles of the feet and to the toenails. It can be spread to other parts of the body, notably the groin and underarms, by those who scratch the infection and then touch themselves elsewhere.

Athlete's Foot/Fungal Nails
Despite the name athletes foot this condition doesn't only infect sporty feet. It is a contagious fungal infection that anyone can get and affects as many as one in seven adults. The fungus that causes athlete's foot is a spore that can survive for up to two years and is usually picked up from walking barefoot across communal changing rooms. The infection usually starts between the little toe and the one next to it. At first the skin is itchy and sore sometimes becomes white, macerated and blisters. Then it starts to crack and peel and if untreated it can spreads to other areas, like the toe nails and sole of the foot. Fungal infected toe nails become thickened and discoloured and gradually they start to split and separate from the nail bed and eventually may be lost. There are various creams and solutions that can be used to help prevent athlete's foot also some measures that you can take to avoid contracting athlete's foot are do not wear shoes without socks or tights, wear footwear which allow your feet to breath, wherever possible allow fresh air to get to your feet, consider wearing plastic shoes like flip-flops in communal showers, changing rooms and around pools, wash feet daily and dry them carefully; never share towels, change socks or tights daily and select socks and shoes made from natural materials.

Athletes Foot
Tinea Pedis is the medical name for the athletes foot fungus. This is a fungal infection that affects the feet, specifically the toe webs and soles. This dermatophyte is afungus of the ringworm family. The same fungi that causes jock itch also causes athlete's feet. These fungi thrive in warm, moist places, such as shoes. Athlete's feet is more common among males, but as more women take up exercising in gyms, and professional sports, women are being afflicted with tinea pedis as well. Athlete's Foot Fungus is communally spread. The fungus is found most often in showers that are used by many people, such as in gyms, public swimming pools, and changing rooms that have not been properly disinfected. Athlete's foot fungus also can be found in hotel bathrooms and rooms that have not been properly cleaned and sanitized. Once the fungus is picked up by the foot (or feet), it is absorbed and retained by perspiration and germs from socks and shoes. Athlete's Foot is not always preventable, but a few things will help. Disinfecting shower stalls and bathrooms before use. If you belong to a health club or use a communal changing room on a regular basis, there are rubber shower shoes that can make it less likely that the fungus will develop. Also, avoid tight fitting shoes, especially during the summer. Expose the afflicted foot (or feet) to light and air as much as possible. To treat athlete's feet, clean the feet twice daily with an antibacterial soap, thoroughly dry and apply an anti-fungal cream, powder or spray. For maximum effect, the cream or powder must contain tolnafftate or undecenoic acid. Use of these products daily for two weeks should take care of the problem. If not, consult a doctor.
