Athlete's Foot www.StudentHealth.co.uk This is caused by a fungus growing between your toes (most commonly the 4th and 5th), or on the sole of your foot. It makes the skin itchy and scaly, and can turn the skin sore and red. The skin scales carry the infection and spread it in bathrooms, swimming baths, showers, towels, and bathmats or anywhere you may walk barefoot. The fungus is picked up by the next pair of bare feet that comes along. To treat it you can get some Canesten or Daktarin cream from the chemist. This should be put on 3 times/day, and continued for 1wk after the rash has cleared up. It may take many weeks. If this does not work see your doctor or nurse for some stronger treatment, but make sure you follow the other advice listed below. Fungi like to grow in warm moist areas, follow the measures listed below and you can do a lot to cure the problem and prevent recurrence.
  • Wash your feet regularly with soap and water. Be meticulous about drying, especially between the toes. To ensure they are dry you could use an anti-fungal talcum powder, but remember that this will not cure any infection already present.
  • Wear a clean pair of socks every day. Choose cotton instead of nylon.

    Athletes Foot and Fungus Problems
Athlete's foot typically affects the skin on the feet between the toes, but can move anywhere on the foot and can affect the toenails. Athlete's foot is an infection of the skin and the nails, usually on the feet. The infection is usually found on the skin between the toes. Sometimes the fungal infection spreads to the toenails, which become thick and distorted. Fungi are plant organisms (tinea pedis) such as mold and mildew and grow best in conditions that are moist. Bacteria may thrive as a secondary infection, which worsens the symptoms of the disorder and makes it more difficult to cure. A fungal infection is one of the most difficult nail and foot conditions to treat. It is common to catch athlete's foot from other people who have it by walking on floors that are moist or wet (e.g. at swimming pools and in shared bathroom facilities). Athlete's foot is also much more common in people who tend to have moist feet. Athlete's foot can also be spread by sharing other people's shoes or personal care items such as towels and wash cloths. Athletes Foot and Fungus may spread to the soles of the feet and to the toenails. It can be spread to other parts of the body, notably the groin and underarms, by those who scratch the infection and then touch themselves elsewhere.

Athletes foot Athlete's foot is a common fungal infection affecting the skin and toenails on the foot. It is unsightly, irritating and contagious. It affects people of all ages and not just 'athletes'. Athlete's foot is caused by tinea pedis, a contagious fungus that thrives in warm, damp environments such as swimming pools and changing rooms - also ideal environments for the infection to be passed from person to person. Moisture and warmth created by shoes and socks also provide the ideal conditions for athlete's foot to flourish between the toes. Skin affected by athlete's foot becomes itchy and sore, especially between the fourth and fifth toe. It can then flake, peel or crack. It can also become weepy. Infected toenails can become discoloured, thickened and brittle. Commonly used oils and their method of application: Lavender: BA BL MA ... MA Key: BA=Bath, BL=Body Lotion, MA=Massage.

    Colloidal Silver vs. Athletes Foot
    Testimonials of successful treatments -
Athlete's foot is a skin disease caused by a fungus, usually occurring between the toes.
The fungus most commonly attacks the feet because shoes create a warm, dark, and humid environment which encourages fungus growth.
The warmth and dampness of areas around swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms, are also breeding grounds for fungi. Because the infection was common among athletes who used these facilities frequently, the term "athlete's foot" became popular.
Not all fungus conditions are athlete's foot. Other conditions, such as disturbances of the sweat mechanism, reaction to dyes or adhesives in shoes, eczema, and psoriasis, also may mimic athlete's foot.
    Symptoms
The signs of athlete's foot, singly or combined, are drying skin, itching scaling, inflammation, and blisters. Blisters often lead to cracking of the skin. When blisters break, small raw areas of tissue are exposed, causing pain and swelling. Itching and burning may increase as the infection spreads.

Frequently it starts in the moist toe webs then may spread along the base of the toes and soles of the feet. Not every scaly, red or oozing foot problem is due to fungal infection. Bacterial infections, dermatitis, psoriasis and other skin diseases can mimic a fungal infection of the foot. Persistent infections should be seen by your physician.

    Athletes Foot in Mouth
Saturday night, the goalposts came down at Wallace Wade Stadium. It wasn't like we were playing UNC, and it wasn't a completely lopsided score, but this was a big win for the Duke football team. It broke our losing streak. And I do mean streak - try fifteen games in a row. But last night, all that changed. It was a sight. I wasn't there for the victory (stupid me - I assumed we would lose, so I didn't go), but they tell me that all hell broke loose when the buzzer sounded. The students swarmed the field, and the baseball team tore down the goalposts and carried them all the way to the chapel lawn. That's the kind of spirit I've been waiting for. That's the Duke I chose to attend. Sports on campus are a huge issue for a number of reasons. First off, the fans are completely insane. Football isn't really a big draw, but people around here, including me, are already counting down to basketball season. Dick Vitale himself is making an appearance at Midnight Madness. And our soccer team's drawing a crowd too, though I can name plenty of girls who watch the soccer games for reasons other than school spirit. I have to confess, Jay Heaps (# 7) is a pretty good reason for me! Then there are the other sports here, ranging from lacrosse to tennis to skydiving. Practically anyone can get involved with a sport on any level. You can't attend this school and not be influenced by athletics in some way.

    Athlete's Foot
The Athlete's Foot (tinea pedis) fungus sometimes has other manifestions with other names, but all are essentially caused by the same species of fungus. However, going barefoot is NOT what causes this fungus to spread. It's an oft-repeated myth that Athlete's Foot is contagious in this way. The spores appear to be generally available and just waiting for a ripe environment ... the hot sweaty insides of shoes. The main point is not how the spores are transmitted (dried fungal spores can float through the air) but HOW receptive is the host environment. The following is from the Athletes Foot pamphlet at the American Academy of Dermatology website Athlete's foot does not occur among people who traditionally go barefoot. It's moisture, sweating and lack of proper ventilation of the feet that present the perfect setting for the fungus of athlete's foot to grow.
It's commonly believed that athlete's foot is highly contagious that you can easily catch it from walking barefoot in the locker room. This is not true. Experiments to infect healthy skin with athlete's foot have failed and often one family member may have it without infecting others living in the same house. The full pamplet is available here at the American Academy of Dermatology website.

    Causes
Athlete's foot, that reddish, crackled, flaky skin between toes, is caused by a fungus, and thrives in warm, moist places. The condition is highly contagious, and is often contracted by contact with infected skin particles in a locker room, shower, around public swimming pools or other similar public areas. You may use one of the traditional powders or creams found at the pharmacy, or try one of the remedies listed below.
    Prevention
One of the most important things to do to combat athlete's foot is to keep the feet dry at all times. The fungus needs moisture to grow. After drying your feet, scrape away the loose skin to allow any medication to penetrate the infected area. See Sweaty Hands in our Folk Remedies section for more suggestions. • You may want to use medicated powder, (do not use cornstarch), or baking soda in your shoes and socks to keep your feet dry. • Wear absorbent socks, preferably cotton, and wash them in hot water with bleach. • Keep your shoes well ventilated, and give them ample time to dry before wearing again.

"I had an incurable fungus in my groin area"
My name is Ron King I am 55 years old I served with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict and contracted jock itch while in Asia. I have never gotten rid of it. In 1970 I saw a Veteran Administration dermatologist. He said that I had an incurable fungus in my groin area. He recommended that I use one of the widely known antifungal creams to try and contain the fungus. It has been a losing battle. For over 25 years I have had huge out-breaks of the jock itch fungus. The pain and discomfort I've experienced from applying the popular remedies to the affected areas has been difficult to tolerate. I'd apply the cream to my hand then hesitate, anticipating the pain and burning sensation I was about to experience. For the first time, I felt comfort after applying a lotion for jock itch!
