When we talk about the use of stimulant medications in psychiatry, we generally are referring to methylphenidate (Ritalin) amphetamine (Dexedrine, Adderall) methamphetamine (Desoxyn) and pemoline (Cylert.) The first two are by far the most commonly prescribed. The stimulant medications increase the release or block the reabsorption of dopamine and norepinephrine, two brain neurotransmitters. This increases the transmission between certain neurons. Each stimulant has these effects in slightly different ways. Thus each may have similar or different effects on the AD/HD symptoms of a given individual. A recent study (using specially bred mice) reported in the Jan. 1999 issue of

The Personal and Professional Coaches Association defines Personal and Professional Coaching as “...a technique which focuses on the clients’ taking action toward the realization of their vision, goals and desires.” Coaching uses a process of inquiry and personal discovery to build the client’s level of awareness and responsibility, and provides the client with structure, support and feedback. Even though personal coaching is still young as a profession, it has given rise to many “specialty areas” of coaching, including the coaching of individuals with Attention Deficit Disorder and Learning Disabilities. HOW DOES ADD COACHING WORK ?
ADD Coaching is a supportive, practical and concrete process in which the coach and the client work together to identify and clarify the client’s goals and to chart a course towards accomplishing these objectives. Most importantly, the coach helps individuals with ADD sustain the motivation and focus necessary to achieve their goals. The coaching process is highly individualized and takes shape according to the needs of the person being coached. Regular meetings and telephone check-ins with accountability are the guideposts of the coaching process. A partnership with a coach can help refocus the client’s energy, ultimately turning failure and frustration into achievement and increased self-esteem. ADD Coaches work with individuals of all ages to help them acknowledge strengths, accept limitations, develop social skills, and actively create strategies that enable them to be more effective in managing their daily lives.

Attention Deficit Disorder Discussion Forum. “Enthusiastic student” and “Pleasure to have in class” appeared on my son’s first mid-term report this year, replacing the “Very little effort” and “Missing assignments” comments that chronically plagued past mid-terms and report cards. My son’s seventh grade teachers gave glowing reports of a young man who handed class work and homework in on time, who paid attention and actively participated in class. I am still amazed that this is the same person who, just one year prior, struggled to maintain a “C” average in school, was tested for learning disabilities and received an Attention Deficit Disorder diagnosis ( Causes of ADHD ) after a school career marked with distress and defeat. This year I found hope. I found Vaxa's Attend Extress , and Memorin ADHD Medications Information ) a healthful, drug-free and cost-effective way to manage ADD and ADHD symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (
