ABA Resources for Recovery from Autism/PDD/Hyperlexia
I am the father of a school-age child who has autism . This page is a collection of Internet and other resources which parents of children with PDD PDD-NOS autism Asperger's Syndrome ... hyperlexia , or Rett Syndrome may find useful. All the information concerns teaching methods that are a branch of applied behavior analysis (ABA) called behavioral intervention . One of the methods is discrete trial training. Some people (inaccurately) use the term "Lovaas method." We worked hard to get complete information, implement a program, and have our school system pay for it. My hope is to help spare other parents (and their children) some of the pain and wasted time we went through. Here are all the helpful resources I've found, with the best places to start marked Why don't the links work? Yeast Infections
Top of page...
It has been suggested that the presence of yeast infections in the gut and, perhaps, other parts of the body, could result in autism. Crook (1984) has done much to publicise these ideas and has been ridiculed for his ideas. Human intestines are packed with bacteria which break down certain foodstuffs in such a way that digestion is aided. Under certain circumstances, yeasts, which are fungi, can become established and will utilise foodstuffs to their advantage. The suggestion is that waste products from the yeast will be absorbed from the gut and create havoc within the body inhibiting development of the CNS and interrupting neurotransmission. Shaw (1995) has isolated a number of metabolites (such as arabinose, tartaric acid and 3-keto-glutaric acid) from the urine of people with autism. Since these substances are, as far as we know, more or less (but not totally) restricted to fungal sources. It is argued that these are evidence of fungal infection. It is suggested that some of these chemicals are sufficiently similar to normal metabolites of human cells, and specifically those involved in Krebs Cycle that this basic metabolic process is disrupted and autism is the ultimate consequence.

  • Joining in a child’s repetitive and ritualistic behaviors supplies the key to unlocking the mystery of these behaviors and facilitates eye contact, social development and the inclusion of others in play. Utilizing a child’s own motivation advances learning and builds the foundation for education and skill acquisition. Teaching through interactive play results in effective and meaningful socialization and communication.

Autistic Spectrum Disorders is a new book by Mitzi Waltz, a revised and updated edition of Pervasive Developmental Disorders The Diagnostic Merry-Go-Round. The diagnosis of ASD is usually a frustrating process of diagnosis by elimination, after a range of specified conditions in the autistic spectrum and related conditions are ruled out. There are a lot of things about raising a child with ASD that teachers, therapists, and doctors don't know much about. Welcome to the Rett Syndrome Research Foundation (RSRF) Online!
The Rett Syndrome Research Foundation (RSRF) was created in the fall of 1999 by six parents of children with Rett Syndrome. Our mandate is clear: to find treatments and a cure for Rett Syndrome, a devastating neurological disorder that strikes primarily little girls, depriving them of communication and motor skills and rendering them completely dependent on others for every basic need. The recent discovery that mutations in the gene create Rett Syndrome's tragic cascade of symptoms has galvanized research in this field. Functioning as an epigenetic gene, is thought to silence other genes through the process of DNA methylation. The failure of this mechanism to turn genes off appropriately may have implications for a wide range of disorders. Researchers from fields as disparate as cancer and schizophrenia have become interested in the exploration of Historically Rett Syndrome (RTT) has been considered rare. However, as RTT research yields more information about the role of in neuronal maintenance and synaptic organization and plasticity, the incidence of related disorders may significantly redefine the frequency and scope of these mutations.

    Introduction

    Misconceptions about Immunization
    Misconception #9
    Vaccines cause autism
On October 3, 1999, Cable News Network broadcasted a program on which the parents of three-year-old Liam Reynolds stated that he had developed autism two weeks after receiving measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine [1]. The program also aired the views of Stephanie Cave, M.D., a Louisiana physician who "specializes in treating autism" with diet and nutritional supplements [2]. An American Academy of Pediatrics official and explained why there is no reason to believe that a link exists between autism and vaccination. But the dramatic before-and-after videotapes of the child probably had enough impact to persuade many parents to avoid having their children vaccinated. The program's narrator stated there had been "a puzzling jump in the number of children being diagnosed with autism." However, the number being diagnosed may reflect increased reporting of cases rather than an increase in actual incidence. Autism is a chronic developmental disorder characterized by problems in social interaction, communication, and restrictive and repetitive interests and activities. Autism may be initially noted in infancy as impaired attachment, but it is most often first identified in toddlers, mostly boys, from 18 to 30 months of age. Boys are 3-4 times more likely to be afflicted with autism than girls. Girls as a group, however, may be more severely affected. Correct diagnosis of autism depends on an accurate developmental history focused on types of behaviors typical of autism and on evaluation of functional skills. Approximately 75% of persons with autism are mentally retarded. Fewer than 5% of children with autistic traits have fragile X or another known chromosomal abnormality. Although no cure exists, autism is treatable. Symptoms associated with autism often improve as children start to acquire language and learn how to communicate their needs.
