Provided by the University of Washington, this site, well it's actually a page, is designed to provide easy to understand information about the autonomic nervous system and its influence on the fight-or-flight response. Since it such a short, easy overview, we felt it would be a good place to begin the list and for you to begin exploring websites about emotion. This is a good place to brush up on the basics. And if you are really interested, there are a few links to more detailed information about the autonomic nervous system. Emotional Intelligence
In recent years, the concept of emotional intelligence has received a lot of attention. Is it possible that people actually have some sort of intelligence for their emotions? Is that what emotional intelligence is? Go to this site, and you will be able to take an online test to find out your own emotional intelligence. The test is provided by Dr. Daniel Goleman, a Harvard Psychologist who is an expert in the area of emotional intelligence. The test has 10 questions and takes just a few minutes to complete. Once your done, you get immediate feedback along with explanations of the answers and some prompting to visit the Utne Cafe to discuss these topics with others (ok, so they are directing you a little bit, but it's not so bad). We can't say that the test is valid, but it is pretty interesting and will almost certainly give you something to think about.

Back then; I was wonder­ing what special contribution towards body therapy I had to make, based on my daily work as a medical doctor with Reich's method. Case studies, emotional discharge techniques, theoretical concepts of the work - it all seemed right, just not my subject. Thus, I tried to recall how I had "come to Reich". I was in the middle of medical school and for years had been learning all sorts of illnesses and symptoms by heart. But the question of how illness actually develops was never raised in my studies. We only dealt with the "damage" and how best to repair it - almost like with a broken car, which won't run any more because the individual parts were just not built very well. With many diseases, I came across remarks like "etiology unknown" or "auto immune disease". The big questions - what exactly is the meaning behind the term "auto immune disease", where does cancer originate, how does cardio­vascular disease develop - remained unanswered.

INTRODUCTION:
This essay explores the effects of a variety of massage approaches on the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system. Swedish massage, energy balancing methods, aromatherapy, lymphatic drainage, Bindegewebsmassage, serial connective tissue massage and general deep tissue massage methods are all considered in answering the question. The aim is (where possible) to identify scientifically validated claims of massage as well as to explore the probable or perceived benefits massage may have. In the words of Tritton, (1993) "claims about massage are sometimes outcomes of rigorous research, but more often-than-not, they are wishful thinking or hypotheses based on the anatomical structures and physiology of the body. ... unfortunately, there is very little to be found in the literature on the physiological effects of massage and very few scientific studies have been undertaken in this area." Furthermore, the small amount of empirical research that does exist, more often than not, does not define the kind of touch or massage methodology employed, and massage is often rolled in with a range of other therapeutic methods (Westland 1993).

Pain Research Institute, Rice Lane, Liverpool L9 1AE, UK Introduction It is an established fact that patients with nerve root compression in the lumbar region (L4/5/S1) often display temperature changes in the foot on the painful side (Lindholm et al, 1981; Uematsu et al. 1988). This study has examined, by means of laser-Doppler flowmetry, the skin blood flow and the responses to autonomic challenge in both feet in patients with low back and leg pain, with and without nerve root entrapment. Materials and Methods Results Conclusion It is suggested that the disturbances in blood flow seen in patients with nerve root compression could reflect bilateral central or autonomic changes to a unilateral injury in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Transsynaptic degenerative changes in response to chronic constriction of the sciatic nerve in rats have been demonstrated in the dorsal horn of the spinal segments innervated by the damaged nerve (Sugimoto et al., 1990). Several lines of evidence indicate that high levels of ectopic discharge in damaged primary afferents may be a critical factor in the production of transsynaptic degeneration.

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION Recently, the effect of various environmental toxins, such as aliphatic and aromatic solvents and pesticides, have become a serious problem for man. We evaluated the autonomic nervous function using open-loop pupillography in forty-three chemically sensitive patients. METHOD AND MATERIALS Patients Pupillography Pupillary light reflex was measured by open-loop pupillography (Binocular Iriscorder C2515 Hamamatsu Photonics) in forty-three chemically sensitive patients and eighteen healthy controls under environmentally controlled conditions. Pupillary light reflex is measured after dark deadaption for 15 minutes followed by a challenge flash of 200 IU of light. The parameters measured are seen in Figure 1. Pupillary light reflexes are mediated by the ANS as well as by the optic nerve. This is especially true for the pupil area (A1), time of constriction (T2) and dilatation (T5), velocity of constriction (VC), and dilatation (VD). These actions are dependent on the ANS; T2, VC, T5 and VD are related to parasympathetic function, and T5 and VD which are related to the parasympathetic nerve function. T5 and VD are related to sympathetic function. This function can be qualified, giving the test a high degree of objectivity and accuracy.

Chiropractic Adjustments Affect the Autonomic Nervous System, Study Shows In a recent study published in the September 2000 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics, researchers showed that chiropractic adjustments have an effect on the Autonomic Nervous System. This research was designed to measure the changes in "Edge Light Pupil Cycle Time" (ELPCT) which is one of the light reflexes of the eyes. This reflex is controlled by the Autonomic Nervous System. The results showed a decrease in the Edge Light Pupil Cycle Time therefore showing a direct link between a chiropractic adjustment and a response in the Autonomic Nervous System. The implications of this research go well beyond the eye itself. The Autonomic Nervous System is that part of the nervous system responsible for the control and function of internal body organs. Chiropractors have said for over 100 years that interference to the nervous system creates a situation whereby various parts of the body will not be functioning at their fullest innate potential. Despite all the reported cases of people with a variety of internal problems responding to chiropractic care, the medical community would always dismiss these cases as a coincidence. This new research adds much credibility to the reports of miraculous results under chiropractic by scientifically showing a link between chiropractic adjustments of the spine and the part of the nervous system responsible for the control of internal organs. This clearly validates and reinforces the great results that chiropractors have reported to see over the last 100 years. Chiropractic care can have a positive affect on organ system health problems.

Nervous tissue
is an excitable tissue that is capable of receiving and transmitting electrical impulses. The central cell type is called a neuron. Neurons usually have a cell body, dendrites that receive inputs, and an axon that transmits electrical potentials. Neurons may be classified as sensory, motor, secretory or association neurons. They are often classified by conduction speed, diameter and the presence or absence of specialized lipoprotein insulation called myelin. Type A fibers are myelinated and can conduct impulses at 12 -120 m/sec. Type B are also myelinated fibers but they only transmit impulses at 3-5 m/sec. Type C fibers are unmyelinated, small in diameter and very slow (2.5 m/sec). An example of a Type A fiber is a motor neuron innervating the gastrocnemius. An autonomic preganglionic efferent neuron is an example of a Type B fiber and a sensory neuron carrying information about diffuse pain is an example of a slow Type C fiber. Sensory neurons are adapted to detect certain types of information from the environment. These include mechanoreceptors sensing things like pressure or stretch, thermoreceptors, photoreceptors in the

A study published on June 3, 1997 in the American Journal of Medicine found that autonomic nervous system dysfunction is present in many patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This may be explained in part by a postviral autonomic neuropathy (damage to the autonomic nervous system), cardiovascular deconditioning, or both, say the researchers. They also found that psychiatric illness was not responsible for autonomic test abnormalities. Led by lead author and neurologist Roy Freeman, MD, of Beth Israel Deaconess School, the study determined that in CFS patients, damage to the autonomic or involuntary nervous system interferes with the body's ability to regulate blood pressure, resulting in hypotension, or low blood pressure. Freeman, who is also the director of the Autonomic and Peripheral Nerve Laboratory at Beth Israel Deaconess and Anthony L. Komaroff, MD, Division of General Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, wrote the study, "Does Chronic Fatigue Syndrome involve the Autonomic Nervous System?" In 23 CFS patients they studied, the Boston Investigators found prominent features of autonmic dysfunction, and abnormalities in tests of autonomic function, including the tendency toward low blood pressure during what is known as the tile table test, patients were asked to lie on a table angled at between 60 degrees. Some individuals felt dizzy and fainted or almost fainted, syas Freeman. The investigators also noted that many patients had a rapid heart rate, or tachycardia, particularly on standing. It is well recognized that rapid heart rate occurs in response to low blood pressure or hypotension and may induce fainting.
