Definition
Balanitis is an inflammation of the head and foreskin of the penis.
Description
Balanitis generally affects uncircumcised males. These are men who have a foreskin, which is the "hood" of soft skin that partially covers the head of the penis. In balanitis, the head and foreskin become red and inflamed. (In circumcised men, who lack a foreskin, these symptoms only affect the tip of the penis.) The condition often occurs due to the fungus Candida albicans , the same organism that causes vaginal yeast infections in women. Balanitis (which is also referred to as balanoposthitis) can be caused by a variety of other fungal or bacterial infections, or may occur due to a sensitivity reaction to common chemical agents. Uncircumcised men are more at risk for balanitis due to the presence of the foreskin. The snug fit of the foreskin around the top of the penis tends to create a damp, warm environment that encourages the growth of microorganisms. Most of the organisms associated with balanitis are already present on the penis, but in very small numbers. However, if the area between the head and foreskin is not cleansed thoroughly on a regular basis, these organisms can multiply and lead to infection. Diabetes can increase the risk of developing the condition.

majorHeading("Posthitis, Balanitis And Circumcision"); Routine circumcision remains controversial. Although 80% of the world's population does not practice circumcision, the operation is done either for "health reasons" or as a religious ritual by Moslem, Jews, most black Africans and others. According to some, one reason that circumcision is prevalent in the United States is that medical and popular literature abounds in errors of judgment and obfuscation. Boys are not usually born with a retractable foreskin and the physiologic process of penile skin dehiscence from the glans takes place over a period of months or years. At birth, 5% of boys have a retractable foreskin, whereas at 5 years of age most boys will have a retractable foreskin. Physiologic neonatal phimosis therefore is the rule rather than the exception. Circumcision is the most frequently performed operation in the United States. Most neonatal circumcisions are performed with the use of clamps or devices (Plastibell, Gomco, Mogen) and without any form of anesthesia. The incidence of complications following neonatal circumcision varies in the literature from about 0.2% to 5%. The majority of circumcision complications occur with devices and clamps and rarely when performed through formal surgery (sleeve resection). The sleeve resection circumcision is performed as an outpatient under a general anesthetic. After also placing a local anesthetic block for added pain control, the sleeve of foreskin is excised, the bleeding is stopped with cautery, and the skin defect is closed with absorbable sutures.

balanitis Definitions:
  • balanitis - inflammation of the glans penis posthitis - inflammation of the foreskin balanoposthitis - inflammation of the glans penis and foreskin
Balanitis is common in young boys with a non-retractile foreskin and in the elderly where there may be predisposing factors such as malignancy or diabetes. The organisms most commonly involved are faecal bacteria and candida. Presentation is with irritation or pain in the penis and discharge from beneath the foreskin. Inflammation is visible. Recurrent balanitis may cause a phimosis with disturbance of micturition. Balanitis secondary to candida responds to topical antifungal cream. Bacterial balanitis may require oral antibiotics. Circumcision may be necessary once the inflammation has settled. Older patients should be tested for diabetes.

Balanitis is inflammation of the glans of the penis under the foreskin. In childhood it is usually a complication of a non-retractile foreskin, and the cause is infection by the germ staphylococcus aureus. This produces pain and swelling of the foreskin, with a discharge, and usually requires antibiotics. Recurrent attacks may be prevented by ensuring that the foreskin and glans are clean. The foreskin should be retractile – which means able to be pulled back over the glans – by the time the boy is three. If it’s not it might be gently encouraged at bath time. Recurrent attacks of balanitis in a non-retractile foreskin may predispose to the condition balanitis xerotica obliterans in adulthood, which may be an indication for circumcision. return to male genital tract disorders

Balanitis is inflammation of the glans of the penis under the foreskin. It may be acute, often caused by the agent candida albicans - particularly in diabetic men, when it will respond to appropriate treatment - or chronic, when it is called balanitis xerotica obliterans. This can prevent retraction of the foreskin, and thereby proper hygiene. Balanitis xerotica obliterans may require treatment by circumcision, since it increases the risk of developing cancer of the penis. return to penis disorders

There is indeed help. Start with over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone twice a day for a week. If that doesn't help, see a doctor. Don't just live with it. Best.
