About Providence

Lumps that do increase breast cancer risk include those showing evidence of excessive cell growth, called hyperplasia; abnormal cell growth, called dysplasia; or both, a condition called atypical hyperplasia. About 25 percent of benign breast lumps show signs of hyperplasia. According to the National Cancer Institute, women who have a breast lump with evidence of hyperplasia have a slightly increased risk of breast cancer. About 5 percent of benign breast lumps show evidence of atypical hyperplasia. According to the National Cancer Institute, women who have a breast lump showing atypical hyperplasia have a moderately increased risk of breast cancer. The other 70 percent of benign breast lumps show no signs of abnormality or excessive cell growth. These lumps are very common, and are not associated with any increased risk of breast cancer. Benign Breast Lumps and Other Benign Breast Changes From the National Cancer Institute: Information on Cancer: Breast changes are common. Women experience various kinds of breast lumps and other breast changes. These changes include those that normally occur during the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, and with aging, as well as several types of breast lumps and other changes. Most breast lumps and other changes are not cancer. Among breast conditions for which biopsies are often done, the results show that some 80 percent are not cancer. But only a doctor can tell for sure whether a condition is malignant (cancer) or benign (not cancer).
Each breast has 15 to 20 sections, called lobes, each with many smaller lobules. The lobules end in dozens of tiny bulbs that can produce milk. The lobes, lobules, and bulbs are all linked by thin tubes called ducts. These ducts lead to the nipple in the center of the dark area of skin called the areola. Fat fills the spaces between lobules and ducts. There are no muscles in the breasts, but muscles lie under each breast and cover the ribs. These normal structures inside the breasts can sometimes make them feel lumpy. Such lumpiness may be especially noticeable in women who are thin or who have small breasts.

The good news is that about 80 percent of breast lumps turn out to be benign tumors or cysts. How can my doctor tell whether a lump is cancerous? If a breast exam, mammogram , or follow-up ultrasound turns up a suspicious mass in your breast, you may want to have a biopsy a procedure in which a doctor takes a small tissue sample from the lump and a pathologist looks at it under a microscope. That's the only way to tell with more certainty whether a lump is cancerous. An excisional biopsy (removing the whole lump) should be definitive, but a needle or core biopsy (in which fluid or tissue are extracted) may not be 100 percent accurate. Afterwards, even if the biopsy is negative, the lump should be followed - and removed if it grows or changes. If it's not cancer, what could it be?

All women have lumpy breasts and many lumps that women find are nodular or lumpy are areas of normal breast tissue which can become more prominent and lumpy just before a period. Lumpy breasts used to be called fibrocystic disease or fibroadenosis. It is now realised that lumpy breasts are not diseased breasts but are normal.

However, the vast majority (at least nine out of ten) are benign, i.e. not cancerous. Benign lumps can be caused by cysts (sacs of fluid which build up in the breast tissue) or fibroadenomas (solid growths made up of fibrous and glandular tissue).
What to look for
Even though most lumps are not cancerous, if you find a lump in your breast, or notice any of the following changes, you should arrange to see your GP as soon as possible:
  • change in size or shape of your breasts (after puberty is complete), dimpling of the skin (skin looks like texture of orange peel), lumpiness or thickening, newly inverted (turned-in) nipple, bloodstained discharge from nipple, a rash, often eczema-like, on the nipple or surrounding area, swelling or a lump in the armpit.

B enign B reast D isorders The majority of disorders that occur within the breast are benign (noncancerous). Among premenopausal women most breast disorders are benign while in postmenopausal women fifty percent of breast lumps are benign and the other half are malignant (cancerous). Benign processes may occur without symptoms or have clinical manifestations such as nodularity, thickening, palpable mass, pain, inflammation, or nipple discharge.
The most common benign disorders occurring in the breast are lumps or masses. Four common occurring disorders in the breast causing lumps are fibrocystic breast disease, cysts, fibroadenomas and fat necrosis.
Anatomy of the Breast
The breast is composed of three types of tissue- fibrous, glandular, and fat. These tissues provide support and contain blood vessels and nerves. The milk glands are referred to as glandular tissue. These glands secrete milk during pregnancy and flow through the milk duct to the nipple. Most of the common benign breast masses develop from the fibrous connective tissue and the glandular tissue.
