The Prostate Gland
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system. The gland is made of two lobes, or regions, enclosed by an outer layer of tissue. As the diagrams show, the prostate is located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder, where urine is stored. The prostate also surrounds the urethra, the canal through which urine passes out of the body. Scientists do not know all the prostate's functions. One of its main roles, though, is to squeeze fluid into the urethra as sperm move through during sexual climax. This fluid, which helps make up semen, energizes the sperm and makes the vaginal canal less acidic.
BPH: A Common Part of Aging
It is common for the prostate gland to become enlarged as a man ages. Doctors call the condition benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or benign prostatic hypertrophy. Normal urine flow. Urine flow with BPH. As a man matures, the prostate goes through two main periods of growth. The first occurs early in puberty, when the prostate doubles in size. At around age 25, the gland begins to grow again. This second growth phase often results, years later, in BPH. Though the prostate continues to grow during most of a man's life, the enlargement doesn't usually cause problems until late in life. BPH rarely causes symptoms before age 40, but more than half of men in their sixties and as many as 90 percent in their seventies and eighties have some symptoms of BPH.

You can visit it by clicking Here The US Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) was established in December 1989 to enhance the quality, appropriateness, and effectiveness of health care services. From time to time AHCPR publishes evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines.
The eighth in the series is devoted to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) diagnosis and treatment. The main book (220 pages and 300 references) is accompanied by a patient booklet and quick reference guide for clinicians. This may seem daunting, but this is a real and readable example of everything you wanted to know about BPH but were afraid to ask! Bandolier has no hesitation in encouraging any healthcare professional or patient to read and enjoy this publication.

Treatment of bph benign prostatic hyperplasia. Symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in middle aged and elderly men.

Symptomatic Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in middle aged and elderly men.
BPH can cause bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) related to obstructions of the urethra and gradual loss of bladder function. These symptoms like frequent need to urinate (particularly at night), urgency and leaking or dribbling, or delayed start of voiding with an interrupted weak stream, disrupt the activity and sleep patterns of the sufferers, thus drastically affecting their quality of life.
The incidence of BPH increases with age. Symptomatic BPH in general occurs in approximately 25% of men aged 40 years or over and in one of every three men over 65 years of age. Although surgery can reduce the problems, most patients prefer initial drug therapy, which can delay and maybe even avoid the need for an operation.
Alpha Receptor Blockers have been established as a standard first line therapy of BPH symptoms.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Commonly, men over the age of 50 will suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This is the benign enlargement of the prostate gland that can make urination painful and difficult. Men with benign prostatic hypertrophy can have difficulties with the starting of a urinary stream, or problems with an intermittent stream. More than fifty percent of men over the age of 60 have benign prostatic hypertrophy and approximately twenty to twenty-five percent of those require treatment. Newer medical treatment may help the condition, but often surgery is performed to remove excess tissue inside the prostate. Using a special tool called a cystoscope, the physician is able to visualize the prostate and remove the tissue without having to make an incision. Many men confuse benign prostatic hyperplasia with prostate cancer believing it is the beginning stages of prostate cancer. However this is not true and the diseases are very different. As men grow older, from about age 30, the inner portions of the prostate gland slowly enlarge which ultimately by the age of fifty to sixty results in benign prostatic hypertrophy. Prostatic cancer tends not to effect the inner portion but the outer portion of the gland. Both diseases are hard to distinguish from each other since they share some of the same symptoms and sometimes they can both exist at the same time. It is best to see your physician for an exam whenever you have any symptoms. The symptoms noted most commonly with prostate cancer are:

Dutasteride (Avodart) is now in the drugstores - December 2002 Dutasteride is the generic name for the new prostate drug that is now being marketed as Avodart. This dual (type l and type ll) 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor is made by GlaxoSmithKline. The drug has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The active ingredient in Avodart may also benefit men with male pattern baldness (MPB). It does this by inhibiting both types of the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase. This is the enzyme that converts testosterone circulating in the bloodstream into DHT. DHT is the main cause of prostate hyperplasia (enlargement) and hair loss in males. Studies indicate that Avodart lowers levels of DHT by almost 90 percent in a two week period. Comment: Well, dutasteride is now in the drugstores and it's called Avodart. It's a prescription drug specifically for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The drug was tested on men between the ages of 47 and 94 (the average being 66) for this condition. But I'm sure that an enlarged prostate gland is not on the minds of the men visiting this site. The questions men are asking here (and the drug is only for men) are these:

Previously, the only BPH treatment options were daily drug therapy or major surgery. Now there is an outpatient BPH treatment called TUNA Therapy. In the TUNA procedure, obstructive prostate tissue is destroyed (ablated) using radiofrequency (RF) energy. The therapy is intended to destroy the obstructed prostate tissue, leaving the urethra and the rest of the prostate intact. Patients are able to return to many of their normal activities within 24 hours. There are a few side effects and events. TUNA procedure is covered by Medicare in all 50 states by many private pay and managed care insurance companies. For More Information Register for Updates Please call

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) What is benign prostatic hyperplasia?
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition that affects the prostate gland in men. The prostate is a gland found between the bladder (where urine is stored) and the urethra (the tube urine passes through). As men age, the prostate gland slowly grows bigger (or enlarges). As the prostate gets bigger, it may press on the urethra and cause the flow of urine to be slower and less forceful. "Benign" means the enlargement isn't caused by cancer or infection. "Hyperplasia" means enlargement. What are the symptoms of BPH? Most symptoms of BPH start gradually. One symptom is the need to get up more often at night to urinate. Another symptom is the need to empty the bladder often during the day. Other symptoms include difficulty in starting the urine flow and dribbling after urination ends. The size and strength of the urine stream may decrease. These symptoms can be caused by other things besides BPH. They may be signs of more serious diseases, such as a bladder infection or bladder cancer. Tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms, so he or she can decide which tests to use to find the possible cause.

T he prostate is a small gland (about the size of a walnut) of the male reproductive system that is responsible for producing semen, the fluid that carries sperm. It surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder, out through the penis.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is one of the most common medical problems experienced by men over the age of 50. This non-cancerous condition will affect over 9 million men by the year 2000. Many men never develop any symptoms. If symptoms do develop, it is important to recognize them and understand that when properly treated, most symptoms can be improved. Until now, BPH was treated by surgery or by prescription drugs that are not covered by Medicare insurance. Symptoms of BPH can be very bothersome and, in addition to their negative impact on your quality of life, can lead to urinary tract infections or bladder obstruction.

Videos ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials Overview Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is not simply a case of too many prostate cells. Prostate growth involves hormones, occurs in different types of tissue (e.g., muscular, glandular), and affects men differently. As a result of these differences, treatment varies in each case. There is no cure for BPH and once prostate growth starts, it often continues, unless medical therapy is started. The prostate grows in two different ways. In one type of growth, cells multiply around the urethra and squeeze it, much like you can squeeze a straw. The second type of growth is middle-lobe prostate growth in which cells grow into the urethra and the bladder outlet area. This type of growth typically requires surgery.
