  • Beriberi is a disease caused by a deficiency of the B vitamins, particularly vitamin B (thiamine). This disease occurs mainly in the Far East, where the diet consists principally of polished rice, which does not supply sufficient thiamine. Cases of beriberi that occur in the United States are usually associated with alcoholism, hypothyroidism, infections, pregnancy, and/or stress. SYMPTOMS Symptoms of beriberi in children can include:
    • Impaired muscle growth.
    • Mental confusion.
    • Convulsions.
    • Gastrointestinal problems.
    • Nausea.
    • Vomiting.
    • Constipation and diarrhea.
In adults, the symptoms also include:
    • Mental confusion and speech difficulties.
    • Wernicke's encephalopathy. If a person with Wernicke's encephalopathy receives thiamine replacement, language problems, unusual eye movements and walking difficulties may subside, but may be replaced by Korsakoff's syndrome, which includes retrograde amnesia (memory loss), impaired ability to learn, and confabulation (making up stories to explain behavior that have little relation to reality).
    • Strange eye movements (nystagmus).

Alternative Names: Thiamine deficiency; Vitamin B1 deficiency
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: There are two major manifestations of thiamine deficiency: cardiovascular disease (wet beriberi) and nervous system disease ("dry beriberi" and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome). Dry beriberi is somewhat of a misnomer because both types are most often caused by excessive alcohol consumption. Symptoms of dry beriberi include pain, tingling, or loss of sensation in hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy), muscle wasting with loss of function or paralysis of the lower extremities, and potentially brain damage and death. Wet beriberi is characterized by swelling (edema), increased heart rate (tachycardia), lung congestion, and enlarged heart related to congestive heart failure. Beriberi has become very rare in the United States because most foods are now vitamin-enriched, which means that a normal diet contains adequate amounts of

SIMILARITY OF POLIO TO PELLAGRA, BERIBERI AND OTHER DEFICIENCY DISEASES
Eleanor McBean Ralf R. Scobey, M.D.,
president of the Poliomyelitis Research Institute. Inc. Syracuse, New York (in the Archives of Pediatrics, Sept. 1950) lists 170 diseases of polio-like symptoms and effects but with different names such as: epidemic cholera, cholera morbus, spinal meningitis, spinal apoplexy, inhibitory palsy, intermittent fever, famine fever, worm fever, bilious remittent fever, ergotism, etc. There are also such common nutritional deficiency diseases as beriberi, scurvy, Asiatic plague, pellagra, prison edema, acidosis etc. No drugs, medicines or medical treatments have ever been able to cure any of these diseases and no germs have been isolated as the cause. But they all respond to fasting, cleansing, proper diet and improved circulation. The similarity of these diseases to polio is too obvious to go unnoticed. They are, in reality, all one disease with varying stages of intensity and different names. It is ridiculous to assume that polio is caused by a virus and the rest of them are caused by nutritional deficiency. Dr. Scobey senses this fact when he states: "Inasmuch as nerve cells react in much the same way to various poisons, further research will probably show that in these cases polio micro-organisms are not always present, but intoxication (poisoning) may be produced through faulty metabolism or by the absorption of poisons from without."

It is the third most common cause of dementia in the US. Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Beriberi has become almost nonexistent in the United States since the discovery of its cause, thiamin deficiency. Most foods are now vitamin enriched, which means that a normal diet contains adequate amounts of thiamin Beriberi, although uncommon, can be found among alcoholics. Alcohol-related thiamin deficiency is caused by inadequate intakes of thiamin as well as impaired absorption and storage. Beriberi can also appear, in breast-fed infants when the mother has an inadequate intake of thiamin or if the infant is fed unusual formulas without thiamin supplements. Deficiencies may also be found in people whose diet includes certain types of fish that produce an enzyme that inactivates thiamin.

    Definition

    Description
Causes and symptoms Diagnosis ... Resources Definition Beriberi is a disease caused by a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B ) that affects many systems of the body, including the muscles, heart, nerves, and digestive system. Beriberi literally means "I can't, I can't" in Singhalese, which reflects the crippling effect it has on its victims. It is common in parts of southeast Asia, where white rice is the main food. In the United States, beriberi is primarily seen in people with chronic alcoholism. Description Beriberi puzzled medical experts for years as it ravaged people of all ages in Asia. Doctors thought it was caused by something in food. Not until the early 1900s did scientists discover that rice bran, the outer covering that was removed to create the polished white rice preferred by Asians, actually contained something that prevented the disease. Thiamine was the first vitamin identified. In the 1920s, extracts of rice polishings were used to treat the disease. In adults, there are different forms of beriberi, classified according to the body systems most affected. Dry beriberi involves the nervous system; wet beriberi affects the heart and circulation. Both types usually occur in the same patient, with one set of symptoms predominating.
