About Early-Onset
Bipolar Disorder Bipolar disorder (also known as manic-depression) is a serious but treatable medical illness. It is a disorder of the brain marked by extreme changes in mood, energy, and behavior. Symptoms may be present since infancy or early childhood, or may suddenly emerge in adolescence or adulthood. Until recently, a diagnosis of the disorder was rarely made in childhood. Doctors can now recognize and treat bipolar disorder in young children. Early intervention and treatment offer the best chance for children with emerging bipolar disorder to achieve stability, gain the best possible level of wellness, and grow up to enjoy their gifts and build upon their strengths. Proper treatment can minimize the adverse effects of the illness on their lives and the lives of those who love them. Families of affected children and adolescents are almost always baffled by early-onset bipolar disorder and are desperate for information and support. In this section of the CABF web site, you will find answers to some of the most common questions asked about the disorder. How common is bipolar disorder in children?

Send a Spirit Flower! On Multiplicity as a gift MPD/DID in Simple Terms
"Very simply stated it is a gift because being a multiple helped the child to stay alive. It allowed them to protect themselves and remain sane in the face of severe and often times long lasting abuse. It allowed them to endure the bad times and to keep their heart and soul safe from their abusers. I am very grateful for the others here with me. We have been able to survive unspeakable and unthinkable abuse together and come out on the other end strong and with a will to live. Without MPD myself and many of my multiple friends would, I truly believe, not have survived. To me MPD is like the dashing hero that pushes a child out of the way from a speeding car. Even though that action causes them to be hit by the car. They do it willinging. Just as society would rightly hold that hero in the highest regard, I hold my inside family members/alters and family/system which saved my life, in the same manner."

Facts About Childhood-Onset Bipolar Disorder What is childhood-onset bipolar disorder (COBPD), and how does it differ from bipolar disorder (manic-depression) in adults? All those with bipolar disorder experience mood swings that alternate from periods of severe highs (mania) to severe lows (depression). However, while these abnormally intense moods usually last for weeks or months in adults with the illness, children with bipolar disorder can experience such rapid mood swings that they commonly cycle many times within a day. The most typical pattern of cycling among those with COBPD, called ultra-ultra rapid or ultradian, is most often associated with low arousal states in the mornings followed by increases in energy towards late afternoon or evening. It is not uncommon for the initial episode of COBPD to present itself as major depression. But as clinical investigators have followed the course of the disorder in children, they have observed a significant rate of transition from depression into bipolar mood states. Is COBPD usually inherited?

    34. The Onion | God Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder
the human condition for millennia, God, creator of the universe and longtime deityto billions of followers, was found Monday to suffer from bipolar disorder.

Above: The Lord, found to be manic-depressive by Rev. Dr. Jurgens (left). Rev. Dr. J. Henry Jurgens, a practicing psychiatrist and doctor of divinity at Yale University Divinity School, announced the historic diagnosis at a press conference. "I always knew there had to be some explanation," Jurgens said. "And, after several years of patient research and long sessions with God Almighty through the intercessionary medium of prayer, I was able to pinpoint the specific nature of His problem." Bipolar, or manic-depressive, disorder is a condition that afflicts millions. Characterized by cycles of elation followed by bouts of profound depression and despair, the disorder can wreak havoc on both the sufferer and his or her loved ones, particularly if it goes undetected and untreated for an extended period. Though the condition is estimated to affect, in one form or another, 5 percent of the world's population, Monday marks the first time it has been diagnosed in a major deity. Evidence of God's manic-depression can be found throughout the Universe, from the white-hot explosiveness of quasars to the cold, lifeless vacuum of space. However, theologians note, humanity's exposure to God's affliction comes primarily through His confusing propensity to alternately reward and punish His creations with little rhyme or reason.

B IPOLAR D ISORDER (MANIC-DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS) IN T EENS No. 38 Updated 5/2000 Teenagers with Bipolar Disorder may have an ongoing combination of extremely high (manic) and low (depressed) moods. Highs may alternate with lows, or the person may feel both extremes at the same time. Bipolar Disorder usually starts in adult life. Although less common, it does occur in teenagers and even rarely in young children. This illness can affect anyone. However, if one or both parents have Bipolar Disorder, the chances are greater that their children will develop the disorder. Family history of drug or alcohol abuse also may be associated with Bipolar Disorder in teens. Bipolar Disorder may begin either with manic or depressive symptoms.
    The manic symptoms include
    • severe changes in mood compared to others of the same age and background - either unusually happy or silly, or very irritable, angry, agitated or aggressive
    • unrealistic highs in self-esteem - for example, a teenager who feels all powerful or like a superhero with special powers
    • great increase in energy and the ability to go with little or no sleep for days without feeling tired
    • increase in talking - the adolescent talks too much, too fast, changes topics too quickly, and cannot be interrupted
