2002 Annual Report
The enclosed report briefly documents the total number of children with cancer seen at the AFLAC Cancer Center for the year 2001, including roughly two-thirds of all the children in the State of Georgia who got cancer. These figures represent one of the largest childhood cancer programs in the country. There have been dramatic advances in the cure rates of various childhood cancers over the last 35 years. For example, acute lymphocytic leukemia, the most common childhood cancer, has gone from a cure rate of 20 percent in 1965, to 80 percent today. Most of this growth has been achieved in conjunction with national cooperative group clinical trial research. More than half the children in the United States, including those treated at the AFLAC Cancer Center, are put on National Cancer Institute-sponsored clinical trials. The AFLAC Cancer Center is committed to providing the best possible care for Georgia children with cancer. This commitment includes improving the already dramatically high survival rates by dedicated research into the causes and treatment for the leading medical cause of death in children in the United States today.

Overview
Innovative research and clinical care for children with blood diseases and cancer have been major activities at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center since Dr. Kenneth Blackfan served as the first Rachford Professor of Pediatrics from 1920 - 1923. The primary objective of the Division of Hematology/Oncology is to improve the lives and potentially provide a cure for children and adolescents with cancer, blood, and immune disorders. This mission is achieved by offering compassionate, state of the art clinical care to patients and their families; advancing our understanding of these diseases through basic and translational research; and educating future health care providers and leaders in the field. Dr. Franklin O. Smith, III assumed the leadership of the Hematology/Oncology division in 2001. The Division of Hematology/Oncology pursues coordinated basic research activities with the affiliated Experimental Hematology Division led by Dr. David Williams

blood disorders are conditions related to blood coagulation (clotting) or hereditaryabnormalities in blood proteins, such as thalassemia or sickle cell anemia
http://www.uhn.ca/programs/obd.htm
Oncology is the term used to describe the prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The treatment of cancer is divided into four main categories, including radiation therapy; medical techniques such as chemotherapy; surgery; and psychosocial oncology. Blood disorders are conditions related to blood coagulation (clotting) or hereditary abnormalities in blood proteins, such as thalassemia or sickle cell anemia. "The multidisciplinary management of oncology patients through the availability of all categories of treatment, specialized nursing and allied health professionals makes the Oncology Program unique in providing comprehensive cancer care." - Dr. Bob Bell, Medical Director, OBD UHN's Oncology and Blood Disorder Program (OBD)
University Health Network's Oncology program is the largest of its kind in Canada. Based at Princess Margaret Hospital, our comprehensive program provides more patient visits and involves more cancer doctors and specialists than any other oncology centre in the country. OBD Care Areas One of the top comprehensive cancer care centres in the world
We recognize that coping with cancer is a difficult and sometimes confusing process for patients and families. To help simplify this process, UHN's Oncology Program offers comprehensive care from one main site, with most clinics and services available at our Princess Margaret Hospital location. Patients receive care from a team of surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, nurses and allied health professionals, while an electronic patient chart records all information relevant to diagnosis and treatment in one place.
